I am learning that sometimes small details matter in this pastime and sometimes they don't.  With that in mind, I have been meaning to ask, when crimping a small connector, does it matter which way I crimp ?

The split ring to be crimped can be squeezed against both sides of the split or across the top and bottom of the split.  I usually squeeze the two side together so far. Then I solder and slide the heat shrink up.

I have been using the red crimper but I guess I'll use the blue until I see the kind you advise.  The blue were a bit of cash but I don't think they were anything near $100.

So I guess it makes no difference. Better to check with those who know than to screw up again.

The pin of the crimper should be on the back side and the shape of the crimper will will hold the split side together.

I'm with Warren on this.
If it is crimped with the pin on the "top" side, the joint on the eyelet can open and the strands of wire can be pulled out.
I have done thousands of these when wiring elevators.

Thank you gentlemen very much. I am having trouble finding out which AWG size goes from the stater to the regulator and from the field to the regulator. The I and A terminals take a 10 AWG size. (1966 289 cu. in.)

I think I was using the wrong crimper. No surprise there. I'll try the other one.

Buy a Sta-Kon crimper. Not cheap but professional.

I just looked at Sta-Kon crimpers. Now over 100 bucks.

But here is a copy for less money.

Thank you Jarvis. I will take a look now. I plan to do my rewiring in the Fall after the Pumpkinfest but with the guidance of you guys, I have finally got my 29 running off the alternator instead of the battery. I had the cable running to the wrong side of my solenoid all these years. Just got it right 30 minutes ago. Idiot. Such a simple fix. Duh. But now I know and that's what this is all about for me. (Apart from friendships made) I might actually wash the car tomorrow. Thank you again guys !

Just like Warren replied.
It forces into the wire and the split doesn't get boogered.

Thank you guys. Next time I hit Princess, I'll get one. I just found another crimper like my red one in my tool pouch and of course, none are the right one. Napa and Princess seem to be my only destinations these days.
