Around the 7:30 mark, this video shows what looks like duct tape on leaf springs. Is it duct tape used to keep the salt from damaging the springs on the Salt Flats ? Stupid question ?
Original springs back in the day were wrapped after being lubricated ,the wrapping was known as gaitering.
This kept the dirt and debris out after a lubrication, much the same reason we have rubber boots on the
greaseable tie rod ends etc.. Another reason being once a spring is wrapped tightly, it also becomes a more
progressive spring rate ,may not be as effective with plastic tape like this one shown( I think that's electrical tape)?
Lots of high end euro cars and later on American sports cars did this trick as well, I know the rear preloaded springs in
the 1954 Corvette I restored were also wrapped..
