speedometer cable grease

Does it matter if the grease is thin or thick on a speedometer cable ?  I have some WD 40 white grease but it is really thin.  I also have an old tube of thick grease I use for my grease nipples.  Should I buy something different ?

The cable is in and spins but I forgot to grease it before going any distance.  I noticed my needle jump and bounce and disconnected from the gauge before it does any damage. Then I remembered I have to grease it.

If you have access to the back of the speedometer, make sure it spins freely. I have seen problems in what looked like a perfectly good speedometer head. To test, connect the cable to the speedometer and drive the cable with a drill slowly and in the correct direction. Make sure the inner cable is fully inserted in the speedometer. A touch of light oil not from a spray can might be needed.  As to the cable, wipe the inner cable down with the heavy grease.

I'd suggest a pair of rubber gloves and petroleum jelly ( Vasoline) applied liberally and worked in to the cable as you go, it is light and pure and when it melts will mix with the gear lube in the transmission with no ill effects, some guys try to use dry graphite but it will make a mud if it mixes with anything else..This is essentially what was in the cable when new..

Lithium grease was recommended to me and it has done a great job.

Thank you Chris, Warren and Bob T. I will see if I have any vaseline. I already put on lithium grease but it was like water. Bill calls it squirrel piss but I figure it's a lubricant so it can't hurt.

Anything that is too watery will transition into the speedometer head and fog the dials and glass.

You hit the nail on the head bud, using the old vaseline. When we came through learning this stuff from the older guy's, that was the all purpose lubricant applied by hand. I never thought about the contamination element into the trans till reading this and with all this new stuff out there, it makes sense it might not blend.
