Attached please find a photo of my fuel line connection - that currently leaks. I finally got the correct fittings for the thread (back and forth to town a lot) and used the correct adhesive (fuel resistant) by Permatex and gave it the proper time to set.
When purchasing the silver fitting that fits in to the tank, I was told at A & M Hydraulics that it doesn't need adhesive where it fits with the tank but the next fitting needs adhesive on both ends. The adhesive is still soft like tooth paste 2 days later. Not sure what I did wrong. Could be leaking at the first joint but hard to tell upsie down in the dark with gas dripping on me. Something to look back on and laugh I hope. But I'm trying.
I could be wrong Cuddles - I have been many times - but I think the sealant stays in putty form even once cured. Perhaps someone else here knows for certain.
To sound harsh, that looks like a fine mess and an accident waiting to happen.
What is the piece screwing into? The tank? What type of threaded fitting it that?
Where is the tank? Is it being tapped into the bottom?
Is that shut off valve approved for fuel use?

Thank you guys. The 'plumbing' was in the car when I bought it. It goes in to the bottom center of the tank in the rear of the car. I bought a new tank that is over twice the size of the original (11 gallons now).
Today my friend Bill came over and put on tape instead of the cream and now there is no leak. I think I might not have tightened the nut at the top enough but not sure. Anyway, all is good now. No leak. I think I can finally take my ride down off the blocks now. It's been 3 years so this is a big day. The seasons nearly over but I enjoyed working on it in the summer season.
I see all those photos online of guys turning wrenches together outside in the summer or in the southern states and for me, this past time fits nicely with the nicer weather. I just wish more people got together in summer like I see in the photos to turn wrenches.
But I understand how winter is the time to build in our climate. Thank you again guys.
My two cents starts with I'm almost 100% certain you won't have an o-ring boss fitting going in to the tank, I'd almost bet the farm that it should be a tapered pipe thread fitting there and that's where your first leak is Jim! it also appears to me that the second compression fitting has the threaded nut not on straight as well...( possible leak #2)

"a fine mess" and "an accident waiting to happen" certainly has me concerned. I am trying to correct all the errors that came with the ride when I got it. With that in mind, please tell me what it should look like / what I should buy ? My contribution so far was the two end pieces that give it the appearance of a pipe. The silver one was the only thread they could find to fit the tank. The next piece allowed me to adapt to the existing plumbing.
Thank you again. We just fixed the fuel line in my truck too. It has been leaking for ages and I didn't know. So much to learn.
Tanks should not be feeding from the bottom. It's fail on a safety for sure.
The silver fitting looks like hydraulic fitting, like Chris said, it probably wrong and should NPT.
The bottom hole should be plugged and the sending unit on top should be feeding the line.

Wow ! I manage to get things horribly wrong all the time. I still want to move some wires away. Thank you mike. I guess I won't be rolling this year. So much to do.

THAT'S the kind of support I need right now. Thank you for that Chris. Found a leak in the truck fuel line the other day with Bill so we fixed that but the tranny is toast. No reverse.
And now just when I think I am almost done getting the rod back together, I find out the connections for the fuel line for my rod are unsafe. Good to know but discouraging. I am trying to find a video that shows the right way. I think my Permatex sealant is the right stuff (thank you Warren) but I got everything else wrong.
The real eye opener is that I ran the rod for 4 or 5 years with those fuel connections under the tank not knowing it was unsafe. So much to learn. On the up side, the rod is a lot better than it was when I got it and I am learning.
I see you are really busy with the big rigs. Has your daughter ever found time to tinker on her rat ?

The poor girl is realizing that working for a living and living away from home makes these little hobbies hard to get too, I'll just
give it a home until one day she is ready... the big truck is back on the road now, that was a huge undertaking, my first complete
Caterpillar inframe rebuild, I too did a lot of learning in that process!
