Ewe, loading a drill press sideways like that is OK for light occasional use but will cause the spindle to wear prematurely. Not really designed to do that.

I agree with Marten. I've used my press for similar operations in wood-working and now I've got a sloppy spindle.........I know there's a joke in there somewhere.

I guess it depends on the brand and quality of your drill press, some appear to have roller bearings, some do not. I watched a very good video last night of a guy who intentionally built a nice mill from a drill press..
