Just heard on the news that it cost "US" taxpayers 80 million to get those Gold medals!! Not sure if I like that $ figure that our Gov. spent to sent the folks over there??? Down hill skiing Bronze was $7 million in costs!!! Never really thought about that way till I heard that report!!!!!

My understanding is that 80 mil is the Canadian figure....I would think that the US spent much more

Canada has put a bunch of money into amateur sport in last few years. My daughter was nominated and received some money last year. There are rules and obligations to go with it.
Last I heard was that Canadian gold medalists get about $30,000. In perspective Canada has some of the lowest payouts for medals compared to other countries. China gold medalists receive about what they would earn in 2 life times. I won't call these facts but it's what I can remember hearing and reading.

I like knowing that some of my tax dollars actually produced something the country can be proud of. Now that Canada has won the gold in hockey and the US got blanked, Gary Betman is threatening to pull NHL players out of the Olympics. A typical yanky response to not being able to fix the outcome, when all they need is to dump Brian Burke.

I don't like that little weasel Bettman but I do agree that professional athletes should not be allowed in the Olympics.
Thats what World Cups etc.. are for. All the major leagues in North America (save MLS) are the worlds best pro athletes already.
The Olympics should be a place for amateurs to shine like it used to be.
