Reading here about Vintage tin getting scarce got me to thinking about this guy,,For those that weren't aware of this guy years back this is an interesting read i think some of you will find enjoyable.

I was at this guys auction sale in 1970, this place was full , Not only vintage planes, but vintage cars/ trucks/ motorcycles.

I don't have the correct link,, but just google:

   "Ernie Simmons story".

I grew up in Tillsonburg I remember his place well. Even then we heard stories of his hermit like ways

I remember the place well since I was a little kid. In a way, its a shame to see it cleaned out.

Speaking of eccentric scrap yard owners, if i may i''ll post a bit about one guy and his yard we had here for a long time.

A very tough character, but a BIG hearted guy, only had grade 4 education, but super fast and smart with figures and money.
Speaking about his only having grade 4, he always told people he graduated from "The School of Life", which he did as he had been through the "mill" a few times over his 70 years.
His yard was one of those that are also disappearing, as you could wander around freely, bring your own tools and take off your'e own parts etc.
He loved a good joke and was very considerate of someone who was "Broke" and kind to kids etc.

Here we have a guy with grade 4 education,,, BUT,,,,,,,,,, had spent the past 16 years in florida in the winter. Over the winter he'd sell trinkets , old tools etc he bought up over the previous summer at a flea market there.

Amazingly over his lifetime before he died he was holding about 22 mortgages!! Some small, some not real small.

Another amazing thing was he got stung a number of times by people who owed him money for years , but never paid up,,, (some of this was up in the $10-20 thousand range, and when you first entered his shop,,, the FIRST thing you saw was a big sign hanging over his cluttered desk, with the heading: "Deadbeats who owe Dunc" !!!
And under that heading was a list of people's names and the amount they'd stung him for!!!

A very unique eccentric guy with only grade 4, but had graduated from "The School of Life" with honours!!

This guy is sadly missed by many.
