ok i finally got the 51 buick engine running and to my dismay there appears to be a knock, now im not sure what it actually is but heres the story, engine starts, no noise, knock gets louder as engine runs. could i have crushed a bearing by unsiezing the engine with a pry bar? should i run straight 30 oil, is 10w30 too thin for such an older engine? i dont have coolant in the engine yet and i have only ran the motor for like 20 or 30 seconds at a time. whats odd is theres no knock when i start it and rev it, the knock develops and get progressivley louder, im not sure if the sound is related to engine rpm. as well the knock is not a loud hard sound but more of a rapid light sound. any ideas folks?
Probably, as the oil heats up and thins, the knock appears......You might try a 40 wt oil
As for what oil, does the engine have an oil filter?...Engines without oil filters used to require the SAE non detergent oil....with a filter, detergent oil. Detergent oil picks up the sludge and the filter removes it
Got a 52 that had the same problem. Was the old bearings. They don't have a very good oiling system. Took the straight 8 out and put in a small block 350. I wanted something I could get parts for down the road and in my travels.
bags in the rear, coils in front, to be honest my car seems to be lowering itself in the front, must be tired springs. i have planned on bagging the front but i dont think i will yet, i use the bags to get over obstacles on the road and parking lots,i leave it slammed all the time
