Grumpsbodyworks and myself have started my new project...a 1931 Chevrolet 3 Window Coupe.
Expected plans are chop 6 inches, channel 5 inches, section, perimeter frame, frame will be the air tank for the air ride system, 355ci SBC with twin turbochargers, 22" black rims, custom interior etc etc etc...
Here are some of the first pictures of the body and day 1 of taking everything apart.
It is the original 31 Chevy coupe frame It has been cut but is restorable. Currently has a 5" kick at the back but could be restored or increased. Devilish is currently cursing up a storm taking the rear end out. Lol. He said he want $200 for the frame or trade for a ford truck 9" 65 " wide.rear end (any ford truck rear) he will post pics of the frame Monday

So we started taking the rest of the axles out, and started working on the body...actually Grumps cut it all, he will give me crap if I don't add that part :)
The 1st pic shows you the rims I am using, the rim is on blocks to imitate the ground.
2nd picture is Grump sectioning the car.
3rd picture is where the rim now sits with the car sectioned 5". That is where the rim will actually sit when the car is aired out on the floor, 2-3 inches below the roof.
4th pic shows the tape line where the roof is going to be chopped off and 6"
5th pic is Grump cutting the roof.
6th pic is gettign ready to weld
7th picture it's all welded up
8th picture is the front with the chop.
Enjoy!

The rear end that came with it is a chevy posi with a 4.88 (I think) It could go with it but the rear suspention would need to be redone...it was crap. There is also an old set of cragers....15x4 and 15x10. The front end we are reusing (a old bell drop axle)
We cut and cut and cut on the weekend..... 5" body section and 6" chop WOW is it low.
Kevin will post pictures later when his stiffy goes down.....

69ss454 my shop is in Milton we will be working on it this weekend. You should drop by and watch Kevin get work..... You'll need to bring your high speed camera to get a picture of it though lol

He mentioned via e-mail that he will be making an "appearance" at the shop on Wed. night. I have not had "Wild Thing" out yet this year and was thinking I would spend the day on Wed. to change up the oil and get her going so if all goes well you may see/hear me Wed. night.
Here are the latest pictures from over the week. The first few pictures are of the bondo coming off the car by chunks...it was crazy how much bondo it had in it. It's all out now and down to bare metal and getting prepped for more metal work.
Looking good guys! I stopped by (unannounced) in the Nova last week as I was passing by but I was short on time. I checked out Grumps ride and an old blue PU parked outside. Knocked on a couple of doors and was amazed you didn't hear "Wild Thing" rumbling away.. lol. Next good weather I'll give you guys a call and see if your working at the shop. Would love to see the new project.
Rick, were on Bronte Rd by the lumber mart. Yes we are selling the cragars 15x4 and 15x10 as a set.....they could be blasted and rechromed or painted and cleared or run as they are...ratrod-ish.
They are selling CHEAP! if you dont claim them in the next week we are taking them and a truckload of other stuff to Ancaster!
We are also selling the GM rear.....could be posi with a high gear ratio over 4. something ....and the original 31 coupe frame....it has been butchered....but could be repaired with about ...i think..... 5-6 hours work
We also have buckets of other stuff from the car as we got it....old period (60's - 70's) stuf
BTW...the car is 37" from the ground to the roof
PS....you can have ALL the old filler you can carry if you want! FREE !!!!!!!!

Always like the drop in company.....Admittance is 1 large coffee, double milk only!
If you stand around long enough .....you will be put to work..... made fun of and generaly abused!
69ss454 dropped in last night.....with his wicked Harley
Didnt get much done on the 31 coupe, but did fix a bunch of PITA stuff in my 31 coach.
1) Replaced the cobbled up dive shaft with a custom one made by Denny's Drive Shafts from Buffalo....They are the best and I HIGHLY RECOMEND him if you need a drives shaft! ( cheap too)
2) Made shock extentions to take some of the firmness out of the coil overs
3) Installed an oveflow tank for the rad
4) Fixed the horn (siren) and the turn signal bracket
Car runs great now! no "Bad Vibes" just smooth and soft ride.... Time to start enjoying the fruits of the 500 hour build!

On the weekend we found a pair of rear body panels for a 29 ford at Anacster for less than half the price of 1 ....I told kevin we will make them fit....soooooo
Here are a few picturs of the left side
I I don't think they come out too bad. What you see is just surface rust that we will clean up this weekend. The bottom corner will be mated to the rear trunk panel...when I make it.....But Im ahead of myself.. We had a ton of work to get installing the panel you see.
First we had to center the car and fix the trunk...the previous owner had layed the trunk lid ontop of the body panels in a way that looked like crap and would rub the paint off the car going down the road. So we had to widen the trunk opening by 3/4 of an inch so the trunk lid fit inside the bodypanels and flush....
The rear deck was sliced to the cab and the fenders were slightly pulled out 3/8 on both sides.
Now the lid fits great....with slight finishing it will fit perfect

Kevin did weld the other night. I didnt have my camera though lol. I'm Grumps 3rd apprentice. ill be helping out tommorow afternoon though. (unless he has more stereos for me to hook up, or to clean their cars again)
We welded in the new rear quarters on both sides and metal finished them, made a new roll pan at the bottom of the truck, filled in the gas tank hole, body hammered most of the dents in the side of the car and frenched in the passenger side rear tail light into the roof of the car.
P.S. TheShopb_tch is pretty good at getting coffee, cleaning cars, sweeping floors, picking up pizza, doesn't mind getting made fun of AND he owns his own rub and tug (he's actually a registered massage therapist)
We can send him to you if you need a good shop b*tch, we only charge $3hr for his labour.
Well ... spent another day with kevin working on the 31.
Both rear quarters are now on....The is a slight difference between the 29 ford quarter and the 31....The wheel well opening is 1 1/2" bigger on the 29....so I re-arched the wheelwell down to size.
I also cut out and fixed where the gas filler had been brazed into the quarter.
We made a rear roll pan with a shrinker and stretcher.
And finally cut and installed 1 frenched cadillac tail light in the rear roof. You may be thinking.....what were they thinking....but it realy was the only place it could go. If we had mounted it in the rear roll pan it would have been 4" off the ground going down the road.....too hard to see.
Kevin welded his azz off...still learning but getting better. And I see Phil our shop B_tch has found this site....he did a great job of raising and lowering the car on the hoist!
It was funny....the shop down from us was hosting a bar-b-q and info session for the Historic Automotive Society of Ontario....and about 15 of them came down to take a look at our cars and shop. When I found out who they were I thought they were going to get all over us for cutting up history...but they were very cool.
We will be out at the shop for one night this week but will probably not be there next weekend ( Mothers Day) sooooo we have to earn points...lol

So we have now almost finished our friends truck and started working on my car again, we built the front frame rails last night, braced them, drilled them etc... We still have to weld the inserts in the frame but it's getting there. The one picture shows the car with wheels...it's both the rear tires in the picture, the front tire is actually a rear we just wanted to see what it looked like on the front, so don't give me sh*t for having a massive tire on the front LOL.
Love the frenched tail lights. Really nice work guys, keep us posted. Know anybody who might be interested in helping a guy out with a couple perimeter frames for 1 '63 Falcon rag and 1 '63 Comet rag in the future?
We were working all weekend on the car, we have the rear frame section almost complete and have dropped the rear axle off to be stretched out. We had to make the rear frame follow the body and the trunk to support the body as well as the air bags.
Here are some pics of what we did.

No not me......thats a buddy 6'3" Top of roof 36" aired out. We will soon be starting to do suspension...waiting for custom rear axels from Oregon....ford 9" centered with disc brakes..Darryl Chatterson from Brantford is building a custom rear end housing we have the fron axel and air bags.....still have to finish some body mods.

Great looking car....but....don't take it personal, i am old school and its just my opinion ...those wheels...they belong on what they call "donks" driven over in Detroit and should never be put on a hotrod of any sort....they are a cross between a ricer and a wellll.......anything over the standard 15" should be banned from Canada ...like i said just my opinion...
Well.........Opinions are like azzoles.....everyone has one...lol (not personal......and thick skinned)
I "Was" old school too, but have recently (Last 3 years) started looking at different trends and have tried to be "leading instead of following" and the cars we are building today are not like anything out there...... not rat, not traditional, not old school, not art car, not resto-mod...but a combination of all and more.
We are trying to get an outragous tire rim combo to accentuate how low the car truely is.....small 15" did not have the wow factor.
"Donks" are mid 70 - 80's chevys with 26 - 30" rims jacked way up for clearance....this car is neither.
How boring would it be...if we all built the same car with the same motor, paint, interior? We follow these builds, not only here...but other sites...to gain knowledge and ideas for our own projects..I know I do
We post here to show what we are doing in a small shop with minimal tools to hopefully inspire others to "try instead of wish" Not all of if is perfect....but "we" did it......ALL!
Thanks for following the Build....more to follow that I'm sure will draw more comments ;)

Rims are 22" ...with tires they are 31'' tall....center of the axel is 15.5" .....the axel is 3" in diameter... therefore the bottom of the axel would be 14" from the ground. This is an underslung frame using 2x4" square tubing with a ride height of 4" and assuming 3" of wheel travel that makes 11" of maximum axel travel = no problems.. Where we will have an issue is when the car is aired out and laying on the frame. Maximum axel height will be 17" with an inch of clearance will be 18" = no good for top rail....the top rail will have to be knotched about 2" for clearance. We will find the exact number when the rear axel is installed and knotch at that time.
Thanks for the question.....keep them coming ;)

Thats the reaction were looking for...lol...The illusion of BFT ( big friggin tires)The tires are still only 31" tall and the big spokes should allow the body colour to show through when rolling down the road

Traditional rats are very cool looking cars, were just putting our own spin on them, using big rims, chopping the crap out of them etc... I chose the 22's in the rear for 2 reasons. 1) 355ci V8 with 2 turbos = stupid power, the bigger the wheel the less chance of frying the tires when I try to leave a set of traffic lights, they are 22 x 11" and the front are 20 x 8.5".
2) I think these rims will look way better when the car is complete with paint. Picture a lime green car from the windows down and flat black above the windows, then picture the flat black rims. Everyone is looking at them while the car is bare metal, when you see the finished project and how everything comes together I think even the traditional guys will agree they suit the car and if not I'll owe you a beer...wait better take that back, everyone will say they hate it for a free beer LOL.
We do appreciate everyone's opinion, that's why were on here!
