Rick - I was also thinking about the lack of car memories coming from the Sarnia area.  In the early 60's Park Lane Chev was very much into drag racing with a 61 Chev 409 car.  Also Lambton Ford in Sarnia was as well.  I remember a 62 Ford 406 car.  I also remember a fellow by the name Dave Gladwish ( spelling ?) as the driver of the Chev I think.  Hopefully someone from Sarnia can confirm and give us a little more information about these two cars.

Will... The only 61 Chev. out of Park Lane that I remember was a black Biscayne raced by Bruce Rumerfield and it wasn't a 409. There was a black 62 S.S. hardtop 409 owned by Alex Kulak from Bothwell that was bought at Park Lane. Dave Gladwish owned the 62 406 car. His brother Bob had a red 60 Impala 348 4speed car that was raced sucessfully. I'll throw a few other Sarnia names out there for discussion. Rodger Killbraith,Tom Craig, Carl Bartos,Mike Grunte,Ron Hewitt,Bob Burch, Posic brothers,Carl Waite and does any one remember 'Gramps' Ah memory lane

Dave Gladwish had the 1962 406 Ford. He went on after giving up driving becoming the race announcer at St. Thomas.
He passed on a few years ago from cancer.

His brother Bob had a red 1961 impala hardtop with the 283 220 hp engine and 3 on the tree that he successfully raced in F/Stock

Bob owned and operated a successful automotive safety supply company which he sold just a couple years ago.
He also has a wonderful collection of super stock cars from the 1960's
I believe he lives in Corunna.

Bob Burch could run with the best of them in his 55 panel 265 4 barrel car.
He was the best man in the country with Rochester carbs, 2 barrel or 4 barrel.
I believe he now resides in Germany.

I bought a 1961 chev impala with the 348/350 horse engine with 4 speed from Park Lane Motors and was quite successful with it in A/Stock. The problem was even though it was a legal A/S most tracks would classify it as a S/S car where it was a tough fight against 409's, 401 fords and the big pontiacs. It squeaked in to the 13's near the end of the season.

There was another good racer from Sarnia named Ron Hill but I don't remember what car he had, except it was a chev, perhaps a 57 power pack tuned by Burch. He was killed a few years ago in a head on collision with a drunk driver between Windsor and Sarnia.

The owner of Park Lane was Howie Gray who passed on from cancer in the mid 60's

Thanks Bob for helping with this.  I was sure Park Lane ran a white car all lettered up.  I remember Dave Gladwish, I just had him in the wrong car.  Was I right about Lambton Ford being the sponsor of Dave's 406 car?

As for the other Sarnia names you have tossed out, non of them ring a bell with me.  Hopefully some one can fill us in.

Will ... The only white car I remember out of Park Lane was the 69 z/28 raced by Bob Burch . It was lettered up. Dave's 406 was bought at 'Rick Colemans Lambton Ford' but I don't think it was a full sponsership.

Dick... I love your recollections. I makes me think L.O.L...Prior to Bob Gladwish's 61 he raced a red 60 Impala hardtop 348 with I believe a dealer installed 4 speed. The car had full length lakepipes. This was prior to St.Thomas Dragway.I saw him race at New Baltimore [Motor City] Mich. on many occasions. Your right about Bob Burch. He is in Germany. He did race a 69 Z/28 Camero owned and sponsered by Park Lane just prior to him moving to Calif. Tom Craig had a parts deal with Park Lane with his Burch preped 'MR. Z/28' white 68 camero.I remember Ron Hill. He raced a black 57 Bel Air hardtop with the 283 powerpack.I didn't know he had died but I did know Dave Gladwish had passed.

Thanks Bob

The 4 speed had to be dealer installed, you could only get the 4 speed (mandatory on the vehicle order sheet) if you were ordering the high performance engine, i.e. the solid lifter version.
My brother Bev had a 61 impala (same as Bob's) only in black, and he did everything to try to get a 4 speed in that car, all to no avail. It would have been easy for GM, it would have been no different than putting it behind the high horsepower cars.
That rule remained in effect until 1962 when chevrolet put the 250 hp and 300 hp 327's in the full size cars.

I did not meet the Gladwishes until the early spring of 1961 and do not remember the 348 car of Bob's.

Being this is about old memories, i will relate an event that happened to Dicks brother Bev.

The black 61 Impala Bev had, one time on a very aggressive "Launch",,,, the driveshaft literaly twisted just like a wound elastic!!(Must have been 2 inches shorter!)
I was at the GM dealership, when the GM warranty rep from London came around, and seeing that driveshaft , stood there shakin his head, and stated to all standing there, i just can't believe what did that!!- How could that happen?? -I wouldn't have believed it if i hadn't seen it!! Lol

Dick.. Do you remember Bruce Rummerfeld [spl] from Sarnia. He raced a black 61 Biscayne 2 door 283 stick in the lower stock classes. It was purchased at Park Lane as well .I took it for a spin when it ended up on a Sarnia car lot but it was pretty used up by that point.Great cars and great times.

Could be.... That Adams fellow had a ton of very primo factory mopar cars....he had a butterscotch R-12 factory 69 Superbee that a local high school guy I knew bought.

The car sat for 20 years and never moved. Was bought by a Ottawa local and sold in California for Massive dollars.I could had that car for 7500 bucks in the mid 90's.

440/sixpack,dana rear,lift off hood,etc,etc.... rare car.

So quite it's possible.... he also owned a 68-69(?) all black factory hemi gtx..........  I had pics of that car at one time...

If you guys are into drag racing at all you need to see this: http://www.georgeklass.net/dragsters.html

A couple of my favourites are the Nanook car with all four wheels in the air and the topolino with the dual Allisons, and I must admit it almost brought tears to my eyes when I saw the '32 and '33 five windows with the bodies drilled full of lightning holes. Great website though.

I knew all of these guys beginning with Graham McKay, but his 64 chevelle was a 250 hp car with a 4 speed. He was some upset when my little brother Gerry beat him with my mom's 289 2 barrel car. Needless to say he would not race my 64 hi-po car.

Bill Griffin had a Fairlane 289 car, he bought a set of headers from me that I had welded up for my Fairlane.

I know he got a 351 car when the Ford dealer was owned by the Kennedy family.

I often wondered if the Gary Perry car was the one I test drove (4 speed 428) with the salesman (Dick Steinoff) and when we went by the drive in restaurant about 2 blocks away he was screaming "holy ****" take me back. I was slamming the gears and his face was as white as a bedsheet. lol

Marv Kelso and I were good friends, he had a rad shop in town and did all my work. He was good with the Olds motors and his cars worked good. He was a good friend of Doug Kennington at St. Thomas drag strip who also was an Olds motor lover. Doug was instumental in convincing Bob Harvey into building the new track at Sparta after they had to stop racing at the airstrip on highway 3 and was also the tech inspector at the track. His son is a Cascar champion.

Ray, I was thinking about the guy from Sweaburg that has an Anglia gasser who also does tubbing and other work, can't remember his name?

You are right Dick, Graham's chevelle and Al wilsons cars were both 250Hp. Both dark blue , same cars just a chevelle and a beaumont.
Thinking about this last night i think Bill Griffins ride was a Mercury Montego?
Saw a pic of him on here from Grand Bend getting an award , but can't remember now which site i found it on, unless it was Grand Bends history pics possibly.
Guy from Sweaburg??????????????
(Gary Perry ended up selling cars there for awhile.)

I grew up in Milton back in the late 60's and seventies. There was a track built between Acton and Georgetown called Toronto International dragway. I picked up an old window decal last year at the nostalgia racing show at Hamilton Airport.

Some of the guys from Milton were the Durante brothers, Louie and Jack. Jack had a sweet 63 or 64 Impala and Louie had a 69 chevelle with a 396 4 speed. He kept that car and continued to race and rebuild it several times. The last time I saw the car was at a Milton cruise night. The car was repainted back to it's original silver grey. Louie has passed away recently I wonder who ended up with the Chevelle. The Neelands were another family of dragracers from the area. They had a very fast
69 Camaro big block as well. Livio Bonin who owned the local Esso station ran a small block Dart and Bev Slessor who's father owned the GM dealership in town ran anything he could drive off the lot or what ever hot car was traded in. There were also a couple of Italian gentlemen who ran one of the local garages drove big block Mustangs and also had a Ford Pantara. I am sure there were many others but these few come to mind.

The track didn't last that long, 4 or 5 years I think the saddest thing that I remember was being there the day Dick Harrell lost his life. When I got my first car I would take it up there and run it through the quarter mile. It was only a 289 Falcon but I still felt like I was running at the summer nationals.

Any one else have any memories of racing at that track?

I used to be In a garage on King street in London back in the early 70's with a bunch of great friends a few years my senior. Bob Palmer, Chuck Kemp, Kit Johnson, Verne Ferguson, Doug Eaton, Ted Cooper and Wayne Pitt. No great race cars, no sponsorships, no trophies just a kick in the ass and a slap at a time when I really needed it. We all built some really neat stuff and had some great times there. Thanks Guys

Verne Ferguson has finally retired, he's got one last street rod to finish and he's done. I haven't seen Kit in years last time I saw him he was still doing Jag Chevy conversions, Ted Cooper did a MGB 350 conv. for his wife, that car was crazy fast, they moved to Australia in 91'. Chuck Kemp Rode for the Trans Canada Helldrivers, he got a free Gremlin and did a Chev conv. on it. Bob Palmer Built a 31' Vicky with a blown 350 and torsion bar suspension nicest custom I've ever seen Then a Manta kit car a Mcleran take off. After Akron Machine closed Bobby packed up the family and moved to Florida. Doug Eaton dawned a leash (tie) and moved to Toronto then the Cayman Islands to work for a bank. A lot more projects cam out of that garage.

Gary Perry 70? fairlane Convert, 428 or 429?
Bill Griffin, ?Mercury Comet? 351? (Dick will know this answer.)

Just thought I would add my 2 cents, Bill Griffin 68 Montego MX convert 428 cj.

Gary Perry 69 Montego MX convert 428 cj

                                                       Marv Kelso 69 F85 Cutlas 455 W31 ?

Post Brothers ex Barrie Pooles Mustang 428cj.

Stu Bradshaw 69 El Camino SS396.

                                                      Bill Broadhurst 69/70 GTO.

Ken Wright has the Anglia ex little yakie car

Just had breakie with Tim Perry we talk about this all the time.

Wally, interesting post!!
(Re: the Little Yacky car"), always wondered what happened to that, Not an Anglia, but a 4 door Prefect, same as Rudy Helds old "Gold Gambler" car.
If i remember correctly it was a hilborne injected 265 that ran "D" Gas, and usually was driven by Ross Baker, who sadly is now also deceased.
Wondering, Is Ken Wright from the area, and what state is the car in?
