There was a guy that shot a ton of photos and Video tape at St. Thomas Dragway when Video tapes first came out. I believe it was Roland (Rolly) Hill. His father owned Hill's Pharmacy in Aylmer, I believe. I bumped into Rolly about 20 or 25 years ago. He told me he still had ALL the pics & videos then. Anybody Know where Rolly is? I am sure he would be a welcome addition here. Tim Sykes also has a bunch of photos as well. Tim is selling DVD's of Vintage Canadian Drag Racing at various swap meets etc.

Rolly is alive and well in Aylmer. I see him and speak on a regular basis. He has quite a collection from the years promoting Drag Racing and the

IBRA ( independent bracket racers association).I have mention this site to him,I am certain he has been here looking around.

Will, all i did was go to the hamb page, (jalopy Journal) then just typed "Mr. Crude" into the search box at the top right.
Had to scroll down about 1/2 way to find it.
Hope that helps.

I did find the thread. Interesting reading and brings back a ton of memories for me. I really liked the look of that Vega. Wes was a great partner.

There is a good picture of the Rydell-Hope-Lang Vega on P 40 of April 2014 Hemmings Muscle Machines. The cover shows a red '67 Nova SS. The RHL crew and cars never got the overall coverage they should have received. Excellent photo.

I worked in the parts dept for Queenston Chev Olds in Hamilton in those days and got to sell parts to a lot of the racers. I was involved in circle track racing so didn't get to attend many drag races but still liked them. A few of the names I remember were Tony Martino with his Falcon, Stu Wooten with a wheel standing Dodge, Al Pottruff '51 Chev Sedan Delivery called "Inner Sanctum". Joe Carlton with his Chevy "II to boot". My brother had a 1954 Chev with a built 261 Pontiac 6 cyl and the truck 4 speed hydromatic trans. Car worked real god and would beat most Mustangs and 300 HP Impala's. Our Sat nights were spent watching the cool cars cruising from the Millionaire Drive In, A&W and Harveys and then later at night would be racing on the S bend on Hwy 20. Great memories.

Here's a couple of pics of a deuce 5 window that a friend of mine in Michigan still owns. THese pics are from 1961 when the car had a 318 Poly motor in it, It now has a 406 Ford in it and was just redone for Autorama this spring.

An old friend of Will's had heard our story of finding the T Bird Deuce and wondered if I could ID this coupe that he had photographed back then. Sure enough. Took me all of 2 seconds to realize who's car it was and I was able to tell him where the car is now. Sure made the owner's day because he had no old pics of this cool little coupe

to edit , click on the box that says "more" in the top right corner of your post - a drop down list will include your edit option

my very first hot rod memory was walking along st clair ave just west of victoria park with my grandfather
a bunch of rods , like 5 or 6 , pulled out of one of the side streets in front of us just as we were about to cross the road
T's , A's ( I suppose) I was only 5 or 6 so I have no clue what I was lookin at except they were bright and most had no hoods
I'll definately never forget that day

years later , I went with a buddy to look at a car he was thinking of buying
he was the type to supprise ya with things he was lookin at or had just bought without saying anything

I think we went to newmarket but really I would not swear to that now

we met the guy at some plaza - where his jewelry store was and , wow , he picked us up in a limo - with a pure white interior & I'm holding an open can of grape crush
( that coulda gone very badly but it didn't lol)

we get to this guys expensive and rather new looking house , he pops open the garage and low and behold there's the chilly willy gremlin sitting right there in front of me

I'd swear I remember the base colour being grey or silver but it's been a long long time since that day now
I think it was back in 87 or 88 (??)

if I remember right the guy was asking about 18K for it sadly buddy did not buy it
lol , I think it scared the #### outta him once he saw it in person

I had completely forgotten that story until I saw the pic of it a few pages back

also , back when I was 6 I got draged out to vancouver by my mother so I could get to know my aunt , uncle , their family and her mother

- early summer of 71

leaning out the window I could see into their neighbour's car port

there sitting under a bunch of junk was a dusty , dirty red and black car with some sort of sticker on the quarter panel

it would be another 10-12 years before I figured out what I was lookin at

a 70 aar cuda - that was going no place any time soon

lol a "parked" aar cuda - early summer of 71 ... anyone's guess what that guy busted in his brand new ride -EH ?

to bad , it was long gone by the time I knew what that car was

- and then , there was the red charger on the street behind me

the grade 8 teacher at my school had a nice gold 69 so I at least knew this was a charger

but as I rode past it the first time on my bike I really had to wonder why someone would stick some ugly pointy nose , a really sick looking wing on it and fill in the cool back window

it was just faded to a flat red , had a dent in the driver's side of the nose and no stickers or badges on it anywhere

shortly after I figured out what the abandoned red cyclone spoiler around the corner on kingston rd was ,, but I couldn't do anything about that

sigh , dad was never a car guy ... I had to figure out all these things for myself

Somebody mentioned Bill Kydd (Will's Fargo) that stirred the dust a little. I remember a transporter sitting at Kydd Rad on Hamilton Rd, London, with 4 or 6 Ford Drag Cars on it. One was a 69/70 Shelby Mustang, a GT500 if I remember correctly, another Mustang, and maybe a Torino, now the image is fading. Who, What, Where?

Alan Feil, (Aspeed) formerly of K-W, now Leamington area, used to make Fiberglass Bantam Coupes. He sold the mold to a guy in Washington State, and never heard anymore. The body was stretched a bit to fit on a T bucket frame. Anybody know ANYTHING? I would like one.

The guy that had "The Hemi Shop" on First St, London had a 1957 Dodge Pickup with 392 Hemi in it. He used to push start the super Modifieds at Delaware Speedway with it. Allegedly, he also had a Honda 600 coupe with a Corvair 6 under the hood. Apparently that was quite a shocker at the traffic lights.

There was "supposed" to be a Mini Wagon with a V8 in the back running around Grand Bend late 60's early 70's. There was a Mini at St.Thomas Dragway with a 340 in the front (rwd)

If the drag cars were blue and white it was the Ford Performance Clinic run by John Philips [spl] . He had Kydd and others drive some of the cars for him with mixed results.

Wills Fargo. Now theres one I had forgotten about. My first Custom sighting was a 57 Chev owned by Gary Groves in the Falls. It was a real good looking car. For Hot Rods it was Peter Whites , I believe a 33 or 34 Chev coupe and Ed Yuhas 34 ford Coach. Both cars were very well done and were knockouts and this was back in the late 50s when hot rods were rare.
I remember in 59 the owner of the local restaurant bought a brand new Caddy Convertible. He loved the car but hated the fins so he sent it to the body shop and had the fins cut off. It became the newest Custom in the Falls.

Gwillyville,
I have Bob Bosma's Program from the Petrie Perf Clinic. He gave it to me probably 25 years ago and it is still in my shop. Bob is a friend and lives not far away. Gentle ben I did work on . I was the cylinder head guy at Wilsons and went over his heads twice that I recall with what was then an NHRA legal valve job. Also changed his bearing a couple of times no fun with the nascar style rods that were in the SS engine. Benny is still around too as is his sidekick Donny G. Sietsma heard from Benny about three weeks ago. Sietsma as I am sure you know is one of Bob's good friends who BTW now owns the 41 Willys C/gasser that showed up at the early Armdrops and more recently the 60 style rail with the Early hemi. He built them himself and if you know Bob you have met Mike S for sure. They live beside each other on valley road. I live in "the 'burgh" myself. Wayne Towns, Once back when I had the 426 hemi car (1976 or so) Wayne came down one night and spent an evening with me at my Power tune Up Shop showing me some tricks to making a HP torqueflight live. The "never mind what the book says do this" kinda tricks. I am forever in his debt. Was all good advice. Sometimes folks forget Wayne is also a Class A Mechanic. Tommy Finkle Introduced us and I have bought several cars from Wayne since he switched to selling. And then there is Harry Wilson who has built more SB chevies probably then any man alive. He did the first 383 Chevy stroker this side of the border so long ago no one even understood what it was. Still does probably 2 or 3 SBcs per week even at 73 years old. I learned my Machine shop trade when I worked for him in his Dad's shop and for a year or so we shared machinery for a bit till he got his new business going. Still see him at least once a week (otherwise he gives me heck.)
And then there is Bob Beazer. An ancient treasure and a good friend.
don

Two other Ontario guys who where a big help to me back then were the late Mike Woods of B&W and Frank Elliot of Drag Supply (AKA behind his back as "The Fonz")

I should probably tell my Mothers Polish (POlish) story that happened to me at Cayuga in the mid seventies but I will save it for a week or so unless someone else wants to tell it. It is pretty well known by the old Cayuga boys and happened in a moment of pure innocence on my part.

Apparently though according to Norm N the victim is still smarting some 30 odd years later.

I wonder who has the "Mr. Crude" Anglia?  I don't think it was ever restored here in Canada.  I tried to find the car a couple of years ago, but no luck.  Maybe it was cloned by someone in the U S

Here is my story and it is totally true.
Back in the day I used to run a white and red 69 Hemi Dart at Cayuga. Early one morning I pulled up in the staging lanes behind a beautiful Black Dart of similar vintage. On the back was a license plate in white saying Mother's Polish. I knew nothing about such things having probably never waxed any of my cars and I think it was a brand new product back then (1976 or so?) anyway. I was making idle conversation with the fellow and he mentioned he was running a BB Chevy in his Dart as they made more power then a Mopar. I almost choked on my coke (I am running a 426 hemi remember) when he said it but struggled to maintain my composer not wanting to be a troublemaker. I looked around for something to say to change the subject and spied the license plate. Always having an interest in my own ethnic roots I had never thought of having it put on my race car plates. "So your Mom' is POlish? "I said . He went berserk. " That's Mother Polish you idiot!" he screamed as he walked around the front of the car and never spoke to me again (EVER). I had never heard of the stuff but may have been somewhat pleased at the result seeing as how he had desecrated the Beautiful Dart with a "foreign" engine despite the fact at that moment I was totally innocent. Now 40 odd years later am I sorry? As a matter a fact , NOPE!
don

dart.jpg

Here is the Hemi Dart. I had no $$$$$$$$$ then for fancy stuff so front wheels were painted stockers and rear were 8 inch Ramcharger wheels which I widened to 12 inches. No chrome anywhere. We used to buy the worn out funny car slicks for $100 and use them. Engine was a 1968 Street hemi I got in a trade for one of my BB mopar engines. It was hurt but I couldn't pass it up. I redid it with 12 to 1 TRWs  cc'd heads to 168 ccs and ran a Sig Erson 999xx flat tappet cam. Intake was Street Hemi intake most of the time.. Car ran low 11s with ease and over 120 MPH. Back then that was enough and I had to give BB Camaros a whole tree. Top end charge on the hemi was frightening. Bucks down racing proved for me a great advantage because out of necessity I learned how to make it work instead of what to buy. In later years when I was building engines for others it proved to be a real advantage. This Hemi is still alive and is in Sarnia. Where the car is I have no idea. This photo was its very first shakedown pass at Cayuga. It was the truck race day but Norm Noddle had told me I could make some test runs. He came and got me just before this and said there is a rain storm heading this way so get up there and go while you can. It was just spitting when I left the line but by the end of the run it was raining so hard I could hardly find the return road.  Norm was very good to me. Sometimes he even got me to burn in the rosin early mornings. The car gave few problems but the driver was hopeless and still is. :>) My RTs are usually somewhere between .750 and 1.2. But back then we didn't know our reaction times. Later when we ran the Getting Vicious Charger I always had a hired shoe driving.

hemi.jpg

Before I had it in the Dart I ran the hemi in a 63 Dodge 2dr post car for several years (because I didn't have a 64 dodge which would have been right for a hemi. ) Now I have a 63 MAX WEDGE  426 which is just fine. While I scrimped on flash(chrome mags etc) I never scrimped inside my engines. Did everything as good as possible

BO.jpg

Shannonville in the 1990s.One of my more successful cars. Many many times this car with my nephew Richard Peck driving brought home gold. $ wise the most profitable car I ever ran.The build and the engine were the basis for the Mopar Book "Old Reliable" car even at its ridiculous weight of 4150lbs with driver would turn high 11.40s  and carry the wheels through first gear sometimes up to a foot high depending on bite. Short times were always in the 1.50s. Mph 118 to 119 range. Car also ran at Cayuga, St Thomas occasionally and Luskville. In a weird twist of fate a farm hand at a neighbours behind me bought it as a roller from the fellow I sold to and has duplicated the original old reliable engine more or less. Other then a change from forest green to slime green the car is as it was when I built it. Still had everything but its heater. Later G wager (Midnight Mirada) drove it for me a lot. Glen Cole even spent some time shoeing it for me. One time at Luskville this car ran 5 consectutive 11.56 runs. The sucker just plain worked!

Good update on Pete and Eds cars. Pete put a 283 in my 53 Chev way back in his dads shop on North St. Seems I can remember Vince running around there to, at least I think it was Vince. I remember Eddies 34 one night at the Quarries. Billy Kamaronies Chev 409 was turning 12 9s at Niagara in the afternoon and that night he raced Eddie  and Eddie whupped him. We all just stood there and stared at one another. Eds car not only looked good it ran good to.

Love the great stories, that Hemi must have been strong.............

51 Styline, those stories about racing at the quarry were all still circulating when I was out there in the early 70's. Used to watch some pretty good racing there and out by Brock's monument......................

During coffee at Tim's today discussion led to a young lady we know with an '80 Z28, SBC 4 speed. She and her boyfriend are early 20's. Driving around they determined "something is wrong". Engine idling about 1800-2000 rpm. They had NO IDEA what to do. The throttle return spring had come off. That was beyond their abilities. The story of how/why she has the Z28 is another matter.
I know that as you read this similar stories come to mind. I guess I am pleased she has the Camaro and can drive a 4 speed.
Like you, I hear plenty of comments at cruise night. Young folks that desire an "Old School" Honda/Toyota/Nissan with names that are letters of the alphabet I never knew were strung together. " I want a Honda CRXYZ-aeiou-ou812", or some other model and I have no idea what they are refering to. I am aghast that mid 80's anything is "Vintage", That Korea and Cruise Night would be in the same discussion. Yeah I know that a big reason why young folks can't/don't play with Domestic cars/trucks is that guys our age want $3.7 million for the shell of a '68 Nova. Far too many our age argue that fiberglass cars are junk or aren't real hot rods, but want $$$$$$ to release what they hoard.

I shudder to think that a Hyundai Pony or Stellar is "Vintage" enough for cruise night. Just think, a 1988 Chevrolet/Toyota "Nova" you know the one called "Toyolet" is "Vintage enough" for Collector Car Insurance and OLD ENOUGH for Cruise night and weekend car shows. AND will be some Kid's FAVOURITE VINTAGE CAR!

I think Jack Daniels and myself are gonna spend some quality time with Ole No7.
Time for some more Old memories.

Here is another memory from the past. Years ago a group of us who ran out of my Power Tune Up shop in Belleville would make an "invasion" of Luskville. Usually it included Gene Fredricks (72 440 Cuda) "Hurricane David" Franklin (67 350 Camaro) Bill Clark (black 440 Super Bee) and Glen Cole who had my old Dart now running one of my 440s. Glenn used to carry the Dart in his cattle truck after washing it out. We hated the drive so one day after the races I said "I know a short cut." Having lived in "The Prior" (Arnprior) for a few years I knew about the Quion ferry to Fitzroy Harbour. The ferry isn't far from Luskville so we decided to use it. They loaded Cole's cattle truck first then the rest. Bill Clark was the last to load and there wasn't really enough room. When he drove on, the taillight and beaver tail of his trailer was actually hanging over touching the water. He wanted to back off but the ferryman just ignored him and pulled away from the dock. Most of the way over the back corner of Bills trailers beaver tail was under water. We were clearly overloaded as well as short of room. I was not very popular to say the least and for many years anytime someone mentioned Luskville they would look at me and say "Never mind Dulmage! We aren't going on the stinkin ferry!"
I think John Chatwood (69 Olds 442)was with us too if I remember right even though he didn't run out of my shop. We were all regulars at Mohawk (Desoronto) in its last days as an active track.
Like many good memories, it is a lot funnier now then it was at the time.

Shifting gears a bit (pun intended), does anyone from the Hamilton area remember a white 35 - 40 Ford (I think) with the name "Bad Ass" painted on the door, cruising around the streets about 1972 - 1978? Does anyone know anything about the car, or who owned it?

I was just watching a 60's drag racing You Tube Video "York US 30 Rated R".
Its a Bee-On- Video. Must be 1971, maybe later. Excellent footage, considering the era. There is a pass by John Petrie in his Dodge Challenger, as well as most top cars of the time. There is also another interesting pass. The Sox & Martin Hemi Colt.
Jungle Pam & Jungle Jim, Don Garlits '71 Dodge Charger Funny Car, more.
By the way, don't start arguing about what year you think the video might be.
Its a Bee-On-Video so it could be a compilation.

Enjoy.

Here is a true lil ol lady story that happened right here. I ran a repair shop and a machine shop out of my home for the last years I worked in my trades. Many of my customers were locals and some were older women who knew my wife's family or friends of ours. One such person was Joan Stanton. Joan drove a Dodge Rampage and I looked after it for her. I knew her son and had known her husband and we had many mutual friends. One day I was working on Car Collector Glen Cole's rare Hemi Charger 500. This was the one with the flush mounted windows and was one of 14 so optioned. I had looked after Glen's cars for some 23 years and having run two hemi race cars was very familiar with every single nut bolt and washer of the 426 hemi. Glen had every year produced since 1966 and he would bring them down for me to go over. I would book nothing else and work with the shop door closed so as not to be distracted or interrupted. Glen paid me well for my work and never questioned my charges. I tried to give him the very best I could every time. I had just finished tune up and rebuild of the progressive carb linkage and was pretty sure I had it right but knew as always Glen would take it for a road test before cutting the cheque. I never wanted him disappointed so I always checked it out myself first. As I cleaned up under the hood Joan pulled in in the Rampage. To put it in perspective I should tell you she is now in her 80s. She looked under the open hood of the big white Charger then she spoke with a grin. "You might not believe me Don, but I know what that is." "Ok. What is it?" I asked. "Its a Hemi!" she said with a big grin. "How do you know that?" I asked. "Well many years ago when Billy had lost his license for a bit I drove him and Leonard Tomlinson down to the drags at Mohawk airstrip. I never told anyone but sometimes after I would go there on my own." I was stunned. A 80+ year old closet drag race fan. I told her I was about to road test it before Glen came and asked her to come along. She wasn't sure I was serious but I persisted. Grinning from ear to ear she hopped in the passengers seat and bucked her seat belt. I fired the big hemi and backed carefully out of the shop. We drove around the lake checking the fuel delivery and jetting changes by easily running the RPM ranges. We made the four corners of the lake then up through the village and reached the clear stretch between the village proper and my place. At that point I turned the big "Elephant" loose. It responded with a tire screeching jump and we made the 2/3 shift just as we passed my mailbox at somewhere around 95 to 100mph. Beside me squealing in great delight was this neatly dressed little ol lady in a nice white blouse. I knew I had made her day. I slowed down and turned around and headed back to the shop. She was still grinning as she thanked me a dozen times as she got in her car to leave. Later in life when I would go to the home where she had retired to, to play fiddle she would bring someone over and have me relate this story. When she passed I went to her funeral. I had to. She had not forgotten and had requested me as one of the pal bearers for her last ride. Seems she never forgot the experience. I will never either. (And yes Glen knew because I told him)
