Well I don't have anything yet...but this ad just came up a couple hours ago..
and i thought i'd like to know if it was a great deal for a good engine. I've never done anything like this before, but i'm keen to know and eager to learn. (intro post has back story)
Never buy anything if you can't hear it run or you know for shure the seller can be trusted .There are lots of spray can and valve cover gasket rebuilds out there. If you can't hear it run you don't want it.After you have a couple of cheap ones under your belt you will understand. Ed
well the last years Ford use a 360 for their cars is back in the 60 s , so parts can t be that easy to find.........the 318 is still available ........but unless your playing with and engine with points wiring it to match a different car isn t easy ................the chevy 4 bolt main is probably worth $300.00 just for the block...........and is the only engine i know that a dumb mechanic like me can get in a car and get started cause you only have 3 wires to hook up to get it going...............all you need to be qualified chevy mechanic is a push button and a toggle switch lollllllllllllllllllllllllllllll
I would be looking at the date of manufacture of any engine you are interested in buying first and foremost. You aren't far from Peterborough so you are well within the grasp of the MOE death squad (death to old cars that is). You'd be better off (in my opinion) buying an engine that predates the emissions era.
First off, thanks for the info guys. He said that I can hear them running, but I wouldn't really know what to listen for to find out if its got a spray on gasket or whatever. Also, what kinda numbers am I looking for to make sure its a 350, and to make sure it predates emissions? Whats the cut off year for that? Well it sounds like its a good deal if the chevy runs, sounds good, and has all the right numbers....
the only trick i was giving years ago to spot a 350 ....or 305 without looking for numbers is the thickness of the balancer on the crankshaft ........350 is a lot thicker.............and the part about being a 4 bolt main you can only rely on the guy being honest or..............the only sure way to know it s a 4 bolt is when you take the oil pan off and see the 4bolts.............i should say the only way i know.............. some other real mechanic may know other ways
In that price range, plan on tearing which ever one you buy down. the cheapest one to rebuild or freshen up will be the 350 The 360 is an FE motor ( same family as 390,352, 428 )and parts aren't too bad to find, 360 was in trucks until about 73 I don't know much about the Mopar stuff Like others said ,it would depend on what you're putting it in
Any used engine is a gamble ... I just bought a pre-emission SBC for a great price ... unfortunately, the water jacket was completely packed with sandy rust (so packed that I couldn't even punch the frost plugs into the block for removal ... did get a great crankshaft out of it though).

Chevy is the most popular, easy to get parts for ANYWHERE if you do have a problem & they FIT in anything w/out a lot of trouble!!! Ford & Mopar will likely cost "more" to rebuild too!!!!!

I'd be all over the 350/4bm/700r. One, for the o/a value of the block and also for the OD trans. I don't like burning gas up for no reason. Then again, where are you driving it and how? It has to suit your needs and style
