My son is customizing a 96 Roadmaster wagon and has removed the woodgrain and trim .We are left with a couple of holes and a whole bunch of small nail like studs that held on the trim.The holes we know what to do with,the question is what do we do with the studs.They seam secure and the couple that we broke off didn't leave any holes and the nubs can be filed down ok.The next question is are they secured to the body some way,spot weld inside or some other method,if we file them smooth are they going to eventually fall out leaving lots of holes.I have not run across this type of trim holder before so any help would be great. Hey Ed, Went through the same deal two years ago with my 92 Roadmonster wagon, the studs are spot welded on, grab a good #40 grinding disc and flatten them down slightly below the surface and give 'em a quick skim of two part putty..Blocl sand as usual, hate to say it but that job sucks... I saw afterwards why the guys liked to use the Impala wagons,no trim or sheets of wood from the rubber tree to remove,ha,ha. Tell him it's going to look awesome when he's done though.. Chris.

Great answer. These types of studs have been used for many years in the GM family. I had to put them back on a 68 Camaro on the front and rear winsheild area because they hold the trim clips for the windshield mouldings. (did a roof skin install) They were popular on 80"s cars like Olds with the lower chrome mouldings.
