Messing with old cars has always been just a hobby with me. Was wondering how many of you guys have made a career of this?...Be it, body, mechanical, paint, pinstiping etc? I dont mean the guys that work in a dealership, body shop etc, but the guys that build or work on hot rods only.
Maybe, maybe not..............I often wondered if I had become a mechanic or something like that, would I still have the same passion for the hobby?....Guess I just added question #2......lol
My guy is a hot rod specialist. While he will reluctantly take on regular cars at times, to pay the bill, he hates it. He is totally committed to rods and has a 34 ford that would knock your socks off.
Unfortunately he recently fell down a set of stairs and completely ruined his life.
Starting out in a retail Speed Shop, then on to a Chassis Shop, and Finally an Race engine shop that did everything in house from the engine development, chassis work, fabrication,dyno tunning, installations......Some of the best years!

There are guys in Sudz that do this...in the Flower Mill, there's a shop called Butlers Garage, he specializes in high end muscle cars. Terry Witrak, from Witrak Specialties, also runs a garage in Minnow Lake, just behind his parts store. Terry also mostly works on vintage tin. A guy named Zarko also a wicked body man, only does body work on classic cars. They're out there, you just have to be "in-the know"...
I have to agree with the work at it to ruin it deal.
I did work as a mechanic as a kid, and in a body shop.
Neither was any fun, as it is all production work.
So i putter at home doing custom roof chops, and such, engine swaps of all kinds, one off engine parts etc.
I think my Merc when finished will showcase some of my better moments, or not, ;o) because lots of stuff is hidden from view when done properly, or your eye just doesnt see/catch it.
I do have a steady clientel for custom tuning of race motors, pull truck motors etc, and motor builds
However retirement isnt that far away, and hangin a shingle outside the shop door may be the realization of a custom/hot/race rod shop dream?

hi been a Witrack lot of times but mostly for ordering parts for the Nova and even the galaxie ..............i went by Butlers place lot of times but never seen to many hot rods around had one friend who didn t get lucky when he brought is Camaro ther to get fix ........Zarko i just don t know
I recently started doing some part time resto work for a little shop outside Alma. It,s a one man operation full service shop on a farm. You would,nt even know it was there driving by.
I am a licensed mechanic and very quickly left doing that as a career to go work for a muscle car restoration shop. I was there 6 months when a fabricating position came up in a chassis builder shop! I jumped at the chance and have been here ever since!!! I LOVE my job and still enjoy working on my car! Still love going to the shows, too! Maybe I'm a lucky one!

I am a delivery guy for the local NAPA store...Its amazing around here how many people have side businesses running out of their farms and country homes. Most around here are tractor repairs etc, but a couple are resoration/hot rod shops. They also do collision work to make ends meet
I'm new here. I have been restoring classic cars and building the odd hot rod- resto-mod for forty years now. Currently building a 62 Nova wagon with 18's and 20's Air Ride, 4 link, and some body mods (narrowed moulded bumpers. clean fire wall, no door handles etc.etc.)............
