welli have finally made some progress on my project.  the frame jig is made and the start of the frame rails are squared and welded in place.  i mocked up the cab and the rear axle to get some dimensions.  i figure i can have the frame made and the rear axle installed this weekend.  i can then set the engine in place and fab the front end.

i thought the rear tires were going to be a bit excessive but they work well.  they are jetzon revengers, i wonder what they are revenging?  too many losses at the strip perhaps.  at this rate i should be driving this by next tuesday

chop?  never thought of that to be honest.  considering the top of the cab will be at my chest height as it is, i didnt think a top chop was required.  stay tuned

besides i can just fit into that cab, people were alot smaller a hundred years ago when this truck was built, tell em ed you were a teenager back then werent you?  didnt they just patent the eight track and the hula hoop? i think tying an onion to your belt was the style as well

hey thanks, i went nuts tonite and fabbed the rear of the frame, once i make the plate to mount the center section the rear end will be hung.  i am feeling motivated to have this moving under its own power before the snow flies.  i will admit i did get the puppy dog eyes what about me look from my buick when i got home.  im installing the new engine monday

well folks i had an inspired day and got the basics of my frame done for the rat truck. 

hopefuly by next week the dom tubing shows up and i can sling the front axle.  i should have this rolling on wheels soon i hope

the first pic is of the motor situated in the frame, the second is of the motor mounted and the rear end installed.  its now on the hoist for the brake and clutch pedals to be installed and other particulars

Is there any particular reason you did not alter the original frame? How did you determine the distance from firewall to the front of the frame,,,It appears long? I am going to build something similar this winter. I have 42 Int'l which I have chopped the roof a few inches 'cause i like to stir the pot.

clutch linkage is done, brake cylinder almost done.  i plan on having this moving under its own power by the end of the month

dropped in on fatstax on the way home from the sat evening port hope cruise. rat was looking good. he showed me the linkage and how the grill assembly was going to fit. is your straight 8 a canadian or us motor? i have a 51 canadian gm parts book and it lists a 51 buick custom as a 43 series with a 8 cylinder, valve in head, 3 3/16 bore, 4 1/8 stroke, with a whopping 32.51 S.A.E. HP

i built this frame myself, i kind of built the truck around the engine to be honest.  i simply estimated the length of the engine, grill and stuff to roughley come up with the dimensions, plus added a few inches for good measure

found another book. buick 46-57 chassis and body, it lists 2 engines. 263.3 ci (sae hp 32.51) and 320.2 ci (sae hp 37.81)

i dont think thats hp, theres no way these engines produced so little power.  32 hp wouldnt move a car of that size in any way effective

the wiki site list the hp as "120 hp (89 kW)@3600 rpm" but the gm manual list s.a.e. 32 hp for same motor. definitely different standards back then.

My friend had a 37 ford sedan that with the stock motor had to travel in reverse to climb one of the steepest streets in town...the best thing about the good ole' days is they are gone

S A E Hp was brought in when the vehicles were "charged" lic. fees by their Hp rating!! S A E was much lower rating for that purpose, " and now you have the REST of the storey"

a new development has developed, i bought a 91 dodge with a cummins turbo diesel, hence the question since i only bought the truck for the engine.

do i stick with the straight eight or go the diesel?

         my first thought was go Diesel    I recently watch my buddie put a  Cummings in a 05 king Ranch Ford  

         BUT

 

        The straight 8   is way more cool and rare...

Hey I have an old blender motor and a long yellow extenshen cord or maybe you could use that old wood insert I saw in front of your shop and you could go steam power.Use the 6inarowplus2 way cooler . Ed

The straight 8 would look so cool and traditional however for power and fuel economy I would go with the cummins,,, The cummins could be "dressed up" to flow with your theme.. I'll give you all the money in my pocket for that straight 8.

With the cummins you could put some big honkin' exhaust stacks on the rat,,flame throwers and a host of goodies to get some personal attention from the "authorities"

just an update i have made some progress on my project.

new cab is installed, transmission bolted in, new driveshaft installed and floor is cut.

i am pained with a great sorrow, i have done the unthinkable, i paid to have a driveshft made.  this is highley out of my character but i felt it made sense and it was only 350 frome driveline in oshawa.  it is a work of art and fit perfect.  next i am building the front axle setup so i hope to have this rolling on all fours by the weekend.
