You got lucky with that shaft. I actually got Dwight to balance the driveshaft off of my Sonoma I restored a few months ago. It was a split shaft with a hanger bearing and all new u-joints, but when I put it back in, the truck would rattle your teeth at 40 mph and that's why I had him balance it. Turns out one of the (Chinese NAPA) u-joints was out by .050". He replaced it with a Spicer joint and it was perfect after that.

ive made my own driveshafts on numerous occasions,i have a lathe so i cut the old weld off the yoke, press it into the shortened tube and make sure the yokes are in phase and weld it up. its amazing how much runout there is on factory driveshafts. i find the shorter the shaft they dont tend to shake so ive never balanced any ive made. in this case i had the jag rear yoke which was 2 inch od shaft and the chev output which was 2 and 3/4. i didnt feel like messing around i want make as much progress as possible, i plan on having this on the road this spring
I never considered making a driveshaft., .local shop made mine which is about 60", so $2.00 an inch ..the previous owner had made one for the truck and it was not straight even from 50' had a hook in it like a hound dogs hind leg.
With the route you are going with the truck you could always build a light bar,,,it would give you more options as to where exactly "we" want the lights.. Sure is coming along fast and looking good!..Hope you find a camera soon,,,those pics are so damn small.
Shawn as for wheelbase, can you say, street rail.If it was any longer MTO would have to issue Fatstax a special permit to drive it.The look is just right with that straight 8 out front and short rear. The fat tires give it a an attitude a kind of altered style drag look. Ed
oh its going to be done and on the road by may, june at the latest. got the frame all welded up on saturday, put engine and cab back on today. now the push is on looks like its time to use some of my holidays to get some rat truck time in. and in honour of the seven cylinder guru(flatblack55) i have painted the frame flat black. finding an ample supply of flat black bombs is not easy in this area after mr white stocks up.
finally got the starter back from the re builder, fired it up for the first time since the last time last year. ed came over to record and partake in the inagural run, in the rain of course with no fenders or windshield, of course
What a fun thing to be a part of ,thanks Fatstax for inviting me for the first ride in your pride and joy, something you built from a pile of unrelated parts and peices. It works,it starts and stops and turns.Nothing fell off or caught fire(not sure on the last on it was raining too hard)and we made it back to the garage in one peice. The next fun thing will be when I kick some rat truck ass in Picton this year,That is if I ever dry out.Congratulations Rob the little truck is awsome. if somebody could embed these on the site it would be better, i dont know how at this time
so far ive raised the rear 2 inches since it was too low to be driveable. the engine i have needs a rebuild but im picking up two more engines this weekend, ones a older rebuild thats a runner and the other is a complete parts engine, i will swap in the better engine for now. the clutch is also bad as i discovered, might be why they stopped driving it back in 74. other than that im pretty pleased so far.
