i going to be adding a list of all the stuff i got so far to get the engine in the nova .pretty soon ........pretty interesting info...........all i know so far i m getting a 350 4 bolt and the guy show me a box with flat piston .......i don t know what kind of heads are on it ................but everything above the block is all going to be replace with brand new heads intake and carb .........camshaft some fancy .........roller lifter and other stuff.............all i know is i ll be paying someone to put it all together ...........it s all a big puzzle for me

ok a car guy should know ........but i don t and if i don t ask i ll never know ........flat piston what does it do.......... increse hp or just better and more reliable ?
To change/ set the CR of an engine relies on a few things. The flat top pistons when installed in place of dished pistons given the same deck height will increase CR, whereas removing domed pistons and replacing with flat top pistons will reduce the CR. Typically increasing CR will give more HP, but the crevat is you should be aware of what other combined parts/ items are used. This is a very general statement and needs a more indepth post to be fully useable. There is no more reliability in flat top pistons unless you are removing higher compression pistons that require higher octane.
here is some chinese to me 4bbl elderbrock 600 cfm heads 23 degree 190 straight plug ,2.02 intake ,1.60 exhaust , cc chamber 64 roller rocker 1.52 x 3/8 cam intake ..........exhaust apv dur 280 valve lift .480 .....lobe lift 110.0...........valve springs way to complicated to read the box lolllllllllllllllllll if it don t blow it should make some hp

Like said, many factors come into play.......Compression ratio seems to have more to do with combustion chamber size in the heads these days than type of piston...Just changing heads can change compression ratio
As stated, the flat tops will "increase" the CR [compression ratio] of engine & may require you to run a "higher" octane fuel & also a timing adj. may be needed too!! If you put a set of heads on engine with a "smaller C/C [Combustion chamber] your going to "up" the C/R again some!! Now if you you go to "popup pistons" this will jack the C/R up again[ domed piston] each step up will increase Horse Power but you will have to add other componates to take advantage & get the H/P out of the engine, Intake & carb change,camshaft, exhaust to get the engine to "flow" No flow , engine choked off & won't run to max. performance waste of $$ on putting pistons in!! It all has to "work" together!!!! Kinda like hitching up a race horse beside a "nag"on a farm wagon!!!!

Read up on "squish" and "quench" in the combustion proces. Flat tops can have a huge effect in combustion efficiency over a dished piston.
Besides knowing how to get a window washed, Dave is absolutely right. Squish and quench will vary greatly depending on piston shape/design, combustion chamber design/size and plug location in the head. These terms are very important to engine builders and racers to sqeeze every bit of power out of an engine. Do you need to get that technical on a street driven unit, nope. You'll never feel the difference.
great feedback guys thanksssssssss .from reading i think it should be worth it to put them flat piston back in ............so all i need to buy is set of rings and bearings and get a mechanic to put it all together
i have a brand new elderbrock carb ................but if i look a staying close to original is a quadrajet consider what should be on the nova...........even if i was to elderbrock is suppose to be a better carb
what really matters is flame travel across the piston top, a flat piston should offer minimal obstructions. pinging in a motor is essentially a sonic boom in the engine i am told. advancing timing as much as possible is what makes power, factors like ridges and points in a combustion chamber will create dentonation points or hotspots. i one trick i was told about is when building a hi po engine is cc ing the combustion chambers, he said that when the engine pings on a non matched engine you are hearing the highest compression chamber first, if they are cc ed you will hear all the pistons detonating at the same time, im told its rather audible.

If you have the Edelbrock, run it. Why throw money at another carb?
Is your point that you want it looking original? If so run a quadrajet under a stock air breather.
