I had the Torpedo back go through a NSRA Safety Check while at the show in W.V. last week, it past A-1 other than he said I should have a 3rd. brake light, which I had just bought at swap meet!!!& still in the box. He also suggested that I join up with NSRA. Didn't do it at the time as I wondered if there was any benifit to being a member up here in the GWN??? Anybody here in it & what do you get with membership???   Pete

Dont know if you should join, but the fact that he recommends a 3rd brake light on a 60 year old car kind of bothers me......What if you want to keep it original looking?....just saying

Agree. It does not need one under our law in Ontario.

A third brake light is recommended, not mandatory for passing a 23 point NSRA inspection. I'm a member, if you don't plan on attending their events then the monthly magazine is about your only benefit.

Thanks, just saved myself $45 Cdn. !!!! & yes the 3rd. light was only a recomendation & I had planned on one anyway, wiring kit had it in there!!! The one I bought at swap meet is a "LED" built into a Lic plate chrome frame with a LED lic. light as well. May have both orginal lic. light & LED as a "extra"!!!!

At times where you are in heavy traffic i suppose a third brake light could be good, but i still like the original look.

Sad that drivers now need another brake light to wake them UP!!

Yes, I agree with you on the "DIM" lights on some cars. Our Fall run I was behind the blk. 40 Dodge & had the same problem, could barely see them in day light!!!!

I am an NSRA member and also an NSRA safety inspector with the Michigan Safety Inspection Team. The third brakelight is not a mandatory item on the 23 point inspection. There are a lot of pre-49 cars with some form of third brakelight because of the dimunitve size of the original tail lights and lack of visibility they provide when lit. Some people don't like the look of a third brakelight-thats fine but today's drivers can't see past their cell phone and tend to follow a little too close. We tend to drive these cars at today's highway speeds. Third brakelights won't keep everyone from rear ending you-but they only have to save you once. How often are you following someone and you are alerted to traffic slowing because you seen the third brakelight on a car up ahead through the windows of the car in front of you? As inspectors we point out the safety benefit of a third brakelight more often now that we are inspecting newer post 49 cars. It is only a recomendation. If you spend time on the 400 series highways or urban areas-they are a good idea-many aftermaket third brakelights can be very bright and small in size-so they dont take away from the 'look' of the car.
As far as being an member of NSRA-yes you get a monthly magazine that reviews many current topics in the street rodding hobby. You can also attend NSRA events where you are eligible to win thousands of dollars in sponsor prizes and enjoy the comRODerie of fellow car enthusiasts like yourself. You are also a member of an international organization dedicated to the preservation and promotion of old vehicles and the aftermarket industry they support.
Often when we offer to inspect a vehicle the owner will decline because "there is some known reason the car will fail"-We tell him that's okay-its the things you dont know about that will get you.
If you are at a show and see an NSRA Inspector-ask to have your car checked out-it costs nothing but something that you dont know about could cost you everything.
When your vehicle passes-we attach a nice little windshield sticker that tells the motoring public that you care about the safety of your older modified vehicle its occupants, and the other people you share the road with.

I also found that when I last had the 64 Catalina appraised,it was noted that the car had passed it's 23 pt. insp.[2011] & has passed it's 2012 in June. Appraiser said it sometimes helps for insurance purposes!!! I have "so far"have never seen a inspector at a Cdn. show or cruise in?? Always have to get them done at US shows??? or Am I just going to wrong shows?? Pete

Right now-I am the only member of the Michigan Safety Team living in Ontario-State Safety Reps Dick and Cathy Confer travel to Ontario several times throughout the summer months. I worked with them in Waterdown(Rockton) this past spring. Windsor show and Melbourne Motor Madness had representation also. It's tough to make all the shows and cruises.

Should be at Waterdown again in the spring-
