A winch is going to take a lot of juice...I would put as large a battery as possible for that. I would also hook up a charging wire from the tow vehicle to keep it charged. The break away will likely never be used, so I would tie it into that large battery.
I keep my winch portable, so I just carry it and a battery when I think I will need it.
I seen electirc trailer brake , break away kits that use a motorcycle sized battery
Question , do you think that size battery would be any good to run an electric winch ?? Probably not .
I dont wanna fit two battery,s to the trailer . Or just use regular car size battery for winch an break away . Like do you have to have separate battery,s for the two units ..77.

the amp draw would kill a small battery real quick. A buddy of mine runs two group 27 r.v. Batteries to run his 10,000 lb winch it was strong enough to pull a 56 Chev p/u 50 feet with a seized rear end and onto the trailer. We had to do it in 10 foot pulls as the winch was getting warm.

We use 2 group 31 truck batteries for they are common for the winches. For the brakes we use a special battery system with LED lights for checking the state of charge. It is roughly four inches square and four inches high so it is easy to mount just behind the hitch head. We buy them from a truck parts supplier in town but anyone that sells electric trailer brakes will have them.

Me, I'd rig up a winch that ran off of my truck. I prefer surge brakes over electric
Surge over electric? Ain't ever heard anyone say THAT before !! I really can't think of one advantage of having surge brakes.
All our shop trailers have had surge brakes. No wiring worries, no brake controllers to mount or look at, no need to wire up replacement vehicles. Been towing them for years without issues

Yeah, love those seized brake cylinders and the joys of backing up. No thanks !! I love to be able to apply the trailer brakes at the touch of a button. Also is the cost factor !! Electric brakes are dirt cheap and will out last surge brakes ten fold.
I have electric brakes on 2 of my trailers...Work well for me. Apparently, there are 2 types of controllers that you can get. I just have the standard one, but they say a proportional controller is better. Here is an article on controllers...
Surge brakes are a "PAIN" when backing up!! You have to get out & disable the M/Cyl. with a pin,or you just "lock up" when backing!!! Both my trailers [car & converted horse trailer] have elect. brakes & work well!!! Both tandem axle, w/brakes on one axle!!!

Richard "aka" SLAB I'll get you some pics. of my winch [not wench] mtg. brkt. this week & post it for you!!!! Was out "looking" at new trailers yesterday & want to test pull with one og my cars on it. Mine pulls so nicely I won't settle for anything less in the way it goes down the road!! Dealer said [reluctantly] that they would allow this!!! If they don't I go somewhere else!!!

heres the winch mount I made up for car trailer + some shots of trailer. Thinking of asking $1200 Firm on it when it goes up for sale?? All new rubber, re -wired & fresh paint!!!! Tows like a dream & kneals down low for loading!!!
Whoa , hold up there . I just sold a 13.5 ft long trailer with solid axles , no suspension for 1500 . Dont under sell yours too quick . I just paid 900 for a nice 16.5 ft tandem , wiring gone south , had to rebuild all shackles an bushings , no spare , make my own ramps . It came with ramps but gave them to a friend . no safety chains . But its a miska an a real good trailer though .. 77. Oh an re witch pic , a long tall woman in a black dress , she had it all.

Thanks for post'n the pi9cs of your trailer. I just bought a float type for 800.00 no ramps, some rust holes in the fenders but it had working electric brakes and a new wood deck. I agree that 1200 for youras seems a bit low but now days not much is selling and new ones are selling pretty cheap. Goodluck with the sale.

Agree, that's why I thought this price might be "in the ball park" & dealer said it would be better to "sell" it privately, they don't deal in used trailers!!!! Going to go over today & do some measuring!!!!
