Mr. Scott, [Dave] i think by now you realize that your on own here as to what to get for the Mrs. all our opinions really mean didley squat as it's you & your wife that have to make the decission, or really her, as she is the one who has to like it??? Pick a few then hash out what one suits your needs. You'll get too many opinions & "Biased" ones at that, me included!!!

Jari, they may find it's not a shock!!! It's much more expensive over there as we found a few yrs ago!! The Lb. [pound] is about $2 to our $1 so they are ahead, off the bat. We were converting our $$ when over there & a coffee back then was over $ 2.00 a cup [2001] & petrol was & is over 2.50 a lb. / ltr. from what my sister/inlaw in England has been telling us.

The Cad Escalade EXT is a great looking truck isn't it ? ...probably bigger vehicle than what your wife wants from what you've been saying ......they've had a lousy repair record unfortunately . High high end Chevy Avalanche has a better repair record as well as a smaller V8 ( 5.3 ) that gets better mileage ....very similar in style , just not a Cadillac if that means anything .
Hemi, I have seen some right old bust ups on forums in my time, all because someone forgot to add a winky face smiley, lol.
I'm looking forward to sitting round a table, or engine bay, yapping about our passion. If anyone upsets you, you can just chuck a spanner at them, problem solved
First off, Welcome almost to Canada. If more people realized the value of the smiley, there would be no wars.
My wife drives an MX5 in the summer and a Mini Roadster all year round. Her last 4 winter cars have been Mini's. Prior to that, she had an X3 and a bunch of Ford Escapes. All except the MX5 are great in the winter months. The only thing that you will find when you arrive, is that the vehicles you are used to, are alot more expensive here. In responce to buying North American, the auto markets, as well as, most markets, have gone global. Air travel, Internet and globe traveling business people have made the selection and pricing of merchandise a mind boggling decision. As has been suggested, take a day or longer, to look at all the different makes and models. Guarrantied, by the end of the day you'll be sitting back, having a few pints and scatching your head.
Thank you for being Scottish. If it wasn't for you and the Dutch fighting over a penny there would be no copper wire for our cars.

Ps. What the heck is a "Spanner"
hahaha, I wondered where you were going with the penny thing, lol.
It's ok, I'll teach you all about spanners and garages when I get there. We go to a shop to buy milk. Not Homo milk though, semi skimmed
Spanner: A wrench, as seen in the title of Spanner in the Works. May also be used as an insult, with implications of incompetence (e.g. "Don't do that, you spanner!").

I always though cars were more expensive over there ?? It would be interesting to find out what cars sell for in Scotland. I thought also that their (VAT) tax was extremely high on cars.
Sporty/executive/big engine cars over a certain age are extremely cheap.
Here's some examples of cars I have had recently, with the price I paid:
Mitsubishi Pajero - 3.5 V6 Petrol - £600
BMW 540i Sport - 5.4 V8 Petrol - £800
BMW 528i - 2.8 Petrol - £600
Subaru Impreza - 2ltr Turbo - £1200
Mazda MX5 - 1.8 - £800
The yearly inspection (MOT) costs £55, as long as there's nothing wrong with it. You have two weeks to rectify any problems or you need to pay again for a re-test.
Road fund licence (road Tax) is different depending on the car. A little 600cc Jap sh!tbox will be free, a new turbo sportscar could be as much as £400 a year. Older sports exec are usually around £220 a year.
We don't pay any sales tax on used cars.
So the used market here is excellent, which is why I've had so many cars, lol. I just want to try them ALL. Getting close to that goal
Dave, going by the prices you show above, I am afraid you are in for some sticker shock on used cars over here.
It's ok, I've been looking up Kijiji for the last two years. Prices are all relative to income and household expenses. Can't compare to a whole country.
We reckon we're going to up the budget to around 12K. I've seen plenty newer Impreza WRX's around that price.
Dave, we only have 1 inspection on vehicle when it changes ownership, after that NONE No yrly. fee, other than lic.plate & thats just gone up to $84 or $86 bucks a yr. Don't know what yr. those cars were but if you take 800 to 1000 pounds thats around $400 to $500 + here! [taking the lb. at almost double] Sales tax of HST paid on car, again only on ownership change!! Hope this helps out. Pete

Thanks Pete.
I think all those cars I posted are 1998 cars.
I know we have it good over here for cars. Just a shame it's not the cars I really want.

Now there's a perfect car. Pull up behind these moron drivers that come from a country that had less cars than here therefore they drive slowly and they'll get right out of the way.
