As you may have guessed, I'm pretty new to this classic American car world.

In the UK we grew up with small cars and small engines. For V8's all we ever had was the Rover V8 P.O.S with less power than a honda, lol.

So we focussed more on 4 pot inline engines with turbos.

We also didn't do much with gearbox's and diffs, as we were'nt changing the perfomance enough to really affect the chassis etc.

I need learn what you are talking about, and I need to learn fast. I have about 20 years of catching up to do

So lets start with engines, specifically V8's

What are the main terms I should be familiar with?

No offence, but do NOT use the term 3/4 cam around real car guys !! There's no such thing !!

If you're used to 4 bangers with turbos, then stick with it because that's our future. I think my next project will be based on GM's (Saab) ecotech with lots of boost. There will always be a need for big displacement engines for racing and the "Wow" factor, but for street use I think 4 cylinders will be the way to go. Half the people that own classic cars today can't afford to drive them because of the high cost of fuel. Give it another 5 years and see how much we'll be paying.

Nope, I still beat him accross the line. I was very naughty and kept the foot down even after I heard the clunks and saw the smoke.

I was racing against an old arch rival that had always slagged off my hairdresser car.

I apologized to everyone for the hour long delay as they cleaned up the track. oops

Not much you can do when things start to come out the side of the block. Even though it was not a funny situation I had to laugh when your wife realizes there might not be a vacation that year"ohh thats not good "she says. Ed

Not only do we have a sense of humour, but we also have great taste in vehicles !! I used to race at Cayuga almost every weekend for a couple years straight. Drove the car 2 hours to get there , put my slicks on and ran 13.20 all day. Hundreds of passes and never broke. Something Chev owners could only dream of.smile

Remember; Inside every Chevy owner there's a Mopar guy screaming to get out !!biggrinbiggrinbiggrin

Not sure how old you are, but yeah, in the 80s you needed slicks to run low 13. This was my daily driver and really wasn't in the mood to burn off my street tires. Running 13 seconds today is not impressive, but 30 years ago it was especially in a 3700 lb car.
