Shop crane - thanks John W
Permalink

I hate renting stuff time and time again, so I finally built my own shop crane. If I had space, I would have bought one and modified it. But the space you see, is what I've got. My garage is 15 x 21 inside. Once I have my truck inside (jammed tight to the wall) this is all I have left to work in due to the rest of the space being taken up by a 40x96 welding bench, compressor, tool box and wall cabinets. If you ever think your shop is cramped...try workin in mine.

Thanks John for the dimensions, it worked out well with a few mods. Its not finished because I ran out of time before I needed to use it...will be finishing it up this winter...or next...or the one after that.

Picture 081.jpgPicture 013.jpgPrincess Auto "air" operated cherry picker, but likely would be too wide for your limited isle space. Like the wheels on yours & looks like it's longer than most 'pickers' which is likely a good thing for a set back engine. Mine "just made it" for length on a 67 Camaro that i did the engine on a couple of yrs. ago.

Thanks guys.

DQP, it Is a little longer than the Princess Auto units In order to give me a longer reach as you speculated. The length makes it a chore to wheel around, but i have to use it in my driveway, so it really doesnt bother me too much. In order To lift my gas welder @ 1200lbs, I'll need to put together some forward bracing that comes apart with some simple pins as this entire thing is a knockdown style like a rental unit. I had to make it this way so that I could store it when not in use in whatever available crevice is left in my tiny workspace.

Another reason that I chose to build my own over modifying a store bought is so I could go with heavy wall tubing and give it a custom reach to handle truck boxes and car bodies etc.

Precisely. I'm putting a Cat 797F engine in my pickup and this is out of the starter motor!

Actually to answer DaveM, I'm turning my pickup into a all wheel drive hybrid....ok, not really...

Its the main armature out of my old welder

Came back as a 331 [327 5 th. over] I told Len that when I put it back together, "it was against my relegion to put the 2 bbl. back on, + it had to get a "CAM"  Here's what he got!!!  Can't believe it was 08 when I did this. You can buy an air operated cylinder replacement at princess auto, I recently replaced the one we have at the shop at work with one. It's a nice feature and relatively smooth. I think it was around $150-$180 bucks.

I'll have to check those out, though I'll likely upgrade to a quick-lift ram if I use it enough. (so I dont have to take my compressor with me if I use it elsewhere)

The pneumatic replacements have both options, hand pump or air.

DQP, do you know if princess auto sells those pneumatic controls as a kit? I'd like to add one, but didn't see any last time I was there.
