283 For sale...

My friend is selling a 283 - was a runner when pulled, but smoked when started. Complete carb to oil pan. I believe it is a 1966 283. Its not stuck and has been stored indoors, in a heated shop in thornhill. $283

I always wondered how you'd price an engine.

(That 1005 Cu. In. engine of "Sonny Leonards" seems pretty reasonable then.)

If you can find unstuck complete 283's for a quarter of this price (~$70) - buy them. That is basically scrap value alone.

I sold both the 283's I had for $250 each and they were not as complete as this motor.

Marty!   are you talking 1/4 of the weight I posted or 1/4 of the 283.00?       I think the weight is right and the same with the price  Carl

You guys are missing the boat if you dont snap these things up!

283 can be had CHEAP ...throw a small journal 327 crank in with good rods and pistons and TADA! 302 high rever!

I have built one for $3500 for 475hp carb to pan......a screamer that will hit the rev limiter at 7500 in a flash

and...........smog free!

Not trying to start an argument but a 327 crank in a 283 block is NOT a 302, its a 307.    The 302 high winding chev is based on a 327 block because of the 4" bore with the short stroke of the 283, I have buit 4 of these motors and they tough, but the 307 is less desirable because of the small bore of the 283.  Now the original 307 is a large journal crank that will fit into a 350 block which will yeild 327 cubic inches

Chad is correct. Some of the older 283 castings can be bored to 4" safley.

A 4" bore 283 is a 301...lol. But they round it up to a 302.

There used to be really cheap pistons for a 307 on ebay - like $30 a set. I built a 60 over 283, with 305 heads, and it was a great little motor. 23mpg in a 3800lb camaro with a 4 speed and 3.08 gears, and ran a 14.9 on top of it.

Boring a 283 block .125 or 1/8th will take it out to 4 inch.
And Yes, the 302 was a 327 block with a 283 crank in it.
