may i should run my plymouth with the the 6 instead of putting a big block ........i had a few slant years ago .....the one that gave me the most problem lolllll the manifold use to get the carb hot and that would dry up all the gas in it .......anytime you stop at the store you only had 10 minutes to get back than it would start ........longer than 10 you had to pump like crazy or have gas to poor in the carb ........
but i used one in the demolition derby and it was my best car not matter how hot it got it kept running long enough to win the round
Sorry, no slant 6 in my future ... parents had a 66 and a 73 Valiant when I was a kid, that was more than enough exposure to those engines for me.
I don't think I've ever heard anyone say something negative about a "slant 6" !!
They were an amazing engine !! Low RPM torque monsters !! Chryco did mess them up a bit when they went to hydraulic lifters, but they were still reliable as long as you had 1/2 dozen ballast resistors in the glove box !! Maybe Chryco had Lucas design their ignition systems??
I never had any good experiences with a vehicle powered by the slant six. Both fathers cars had issues when it was damp out (my dad is not mechanical so the cap and wires never got changed) but the condition was not helped by the location of the dist on those engines. Also, someone had to show my dad how to stick a pencil down the carb when the choke stuck (again, easily fixed but dad isn't mechanical). I was too young to know anything about engines and how to fix those probs so my childhood memories of slant six powered cars (both 225's) are not good ones.
Several years later a friend buys a winter beater Duster with the three-on-tree std trans. I hated how gutless the car was, hated column shifting (although I do like std trans), and couldn't stand the no-synchro first gear. That car ended up crapping out on the 401 with terminal engine issues ... buddy signed the ownership, left it on the dash, took the plates off and walked away from that one. Once again, bad memories of something powered by a slant six. I won't even go into how gutless the engine was in my inlaws 84 Dodge Ram ... yeah, slant six and full size truck is not a good combo. I don't hate Mopar (I loved my 340 Duster), I just do not have any good memories of vehicles powered by those engines.
Good memories and an inline six? ... the AMC 258. Had three vehicles with that engine in it and damn that was a good powerplant (72 Hornet wagon hand-me-down, 80 Spirit 4 gear ... tons of fun with no lack of power for a relatively small light car, and an 85 Eagle wagon 4-wheel-drive ... now that car could and did do everything well).

Back in 1975 I worked with a guy who lived in Orangeville and drove to Brampton everyday with a 64 Plymouth sedan, slant 6, automatic, about a 60 mile return trip. He wanted a new car but wife said "no" until it quits. So everyday on his way home up Hwy 10 he'd punch 2'nd gear at the bottom of what was referred to as the Caledon mountain, about a 2 mile long grade, and would hold it on the floor to the top. He did this day in out, would never change the oil. i moved on in 1980 and he was still trying to blow it up!!
Had a friend who picked up a dark green with black int , 68 dart gt ( i think ) with 6 and auto . It ,d do 105 mph by the speedo on flat ground on 400 an 401 any time you wanted it too ..77.

I had a 1966 Valiant Custom with a Super 225/3 spd auto. Quick, economical, dependable in a sharp looking car. Beat my buddy in his 66 Chevelle with a warmed up 250/powerglide every time. Wish I had one today.
My oddball engine? - A.M.C. 327 in my '64 Rambler Classic. Wish I still had that one too............
My Valiant is all stock 225 leaning tower of power. Had big block mopars and small block Fords Chevs and straight 6 Chevys Fords AMCs . They have all had there issues sworn to fun loyal to none.

the slant is a rather incredible engine, forged internals, the block could be made from cast or aluminum, of which they did make an aluminum performance model. dodge even did a dual carb cammed up version that pushed over 400 hp. i was told that these engines were bought and were too tall to fit under the hood, so they leaned the motor over to fit, true story im told

When I was doing my apprenticeship, I worked for a shop in Whitby that did all of the maintenance on the Taxi Cabs for Bell Taxi...we gotta a call from dispatch that one of the guys was on the way over and wanted us to have a look at one of the cabs as there was a "small" noise in the engine....well he drove it in.....there was a small noise along with a hole in the side of the block where the rod had let go.....still running, rod broken off and still spining on the crank....lmao.... then he asks can you fix it? Im on my way to the airport.............this was the Chryslers new Slant 5..........
