SBC Casting/Vin Codes?

Sorry my mistake I misread the part that said BBL. Thanks Carl. Can anyone decode the other vin code to get the exact year?

I have searched around checking casting codes to try nd date my block (nastyZ28 and other internet sources). The engine ID code is K 09 07 TKB which is st. catherines sept. 7th 1976 or 79 4 bolt. The thing is I'm pretty sure that I've got a 2 bolt lol. So I tried to search what I thought was the engine vin code (also on the deck pad with id code) but no results my code does not match the format on any casting site. The # is T71503981. Also I've noticed a few single letters and numbers around the block, but no traditional casting date code like E038.Any help would be appreciated.

TKB1976350conv.cabL LS91654C-10 & 1500
TKB1979350conv. cab, m/tL LS91654C-30 & 3500

Its a truck engine  4 bbl      2 bolt or 4 bolt means nothing for a  driver        4 bolt is nice for 7000 rpm race motors

My understanding is that none of the casting or suffix codes will determine if a block is 2 or 4 bolt main...That is determined after all that is done in the plants

The question isn't whether is a two or four bolt, i have a 2. I thought that my casting was supposed to be a 4 bolt then Carl pointed out that it was BBL for the carb. I"m now just trying to narrow the date down if possible.

easiest way if the engine is out of the car you pull the oil pan off than you ll be 100% sure if it s 2 or 4 bolts

I can't make sense for sure of the T71.

But the casting date of the block is located behind the drivers side cylinder head.

But this won't tell you what the build date was or what vehicle it went into. Or if it is a 2 or 4 bolt.

it is D17 73.  That is April 17 1973. (A= January, B=February, C=March. etc)

the casting "clock" beside it says it was cast in the 9th hour of the 1st shift.

I do not have any numbers in that spot just a single letter K right on that hump turned 90 degrees.

I understand wanting to know the year of the casting for emission compliance reasons but I wouldn't sweat the 2 bolt/4 bolt deal if it for a street driver. I ran a 2 bolt 350 in a tubbed Nova for years and beat the hell out of it ... broke some tranmissions (Super T10's) but never had an issue with it being a 2 bolt. Just my opinion.

I have also read somewhere that converting a 2 bolt block to a 4 bolt block ends up being stronger than a factory 4 bolt block.

Agree with Dave M,a 1973 casting. Chevy by the Numbers says that this is a Tonawanda casting and in 1972 5 plants cast blocks. Flint plant does not show casting this block. All Tonawanda castings have full last 2 digits of year cast(73) and this has D 17 73 as opposed to D 17 3 (Apr 17th 73).This block was used from '70 to '73. I am gonna go out on a limb and say that this 3970014 was cast in Tonawanda then shipped to St Catherines(K) machined and stamped T71503981 then installed in a truck (TXB) so I will say 4 bolt main.Pull the pan off!smile

Just to clear up , the picture I posted with the date casting is a block that I have here, not Scott420P's block.

I fell off the limb!   It's a truck McKinnon casting from St Cath.Ont.Look for a casting date on the block sides or the bellhousing area.

The block that I have is an 010 casting and is 2 bolt. I'll have to look a little harder for a date casting. Its out of my truck on a stand so looking around on the block is not a problem.
