Well it's here again, and honestly, as ridiculous as some of the prices may be...I can't help but watch it, LOL. This year more then others, as I have a friend there, I was suppose to go, but work got in the way.

What are your taughts, opinions etc... Love to hear about it. They have a great selection of just about everything. some great some standard.

But as always, you see the over-priced stuff, that inflate the market for us true car lovers. I suppose if your buying, this would suck, but having your car appraised at a higher value, god forbid you'd have to put a claim true insurance for value, it might not be such a bad thing.

Disclaimer: This thread is not in conjuction with my other recently started thread " Insurance @#^%^" (or something like that).

I couldn't agree more. It assists in distorting many people's views as to the true or realistic value of classic cars and trucks (and parts)

I have not had a chance to watch much of the auctions but since it is televised and ratings are key, only the vehicles that would create interest would be going through at prime time. So in the off hours are the cars more common with respectable pricing that maybe the remaining 99 percentile could afford? But Novaclone you are right, they are bored buying land and want to have a cool ride. It is good for us that want to sell or do work for these people but when you want to get the next project that base model rust free car is worth a mint because one sold on Barrett Jackson for large.

Is any car worth 2 million or more?  --  YEP  -- just ask the guy that bought it - It was worth it to him and REALLY that is all that matters.  The buyer is happy and the seller is happy.

PS - they likely already own land, - a lot of land!

They ran a 70 VALIANT 4 door yesterday it sold for $6500.00 after a $25,000.00 restoration. I feel good knowing some fool wont be bugging me to sell. Low cost = more fun in my point of view.

Most buyers are not car guys as we know them these guys need to hide $$$$$ from the I.R.S. Its got very little to do with the cars just another commodity to burn up funds. Its win win if the price goes up they make $ if prices go down they get tax right offs.

I've been wanting to go for years, and these last three years, something came up. I will definately end up going, eventually.

There's lots of nice steel to see there.

been there done that. there are 3 other auctions going on at the same time within a 20-25 mile radius of the b-j sale. one a mile up the road, russo/steele sale, one for concours cars and one at an indian casino. the one at the casino had more reality to it. they list the days high sales in a local paper and the concours sale beat b-j's the week we were there. b-j's was 500-600$ non-refundable for a bidders pass unless you bought one. r-s was 2-300$, concours i don't know and the casino was 20-30$.
it was on my bucket list and we scored free passes for the week from another buddy so it added up to go. if i ever go again i will take my clubs with me though. its a long-long week of nothing but cars. well almost nothing but. lol

I was there a few years ago in Feb...They were still taking down the auction stuff....It is quite the complex. I was told that there are plenty of cheaper cars and a swap meet that dont get on TV....Would like to go during the event one year. That casino Shag speaks of is right beside the Phoenix dragstrip. While the wife was in the casino, I was over there.

it's a great way to spot isn't it? Whenever I visit a remote city or area I don't get to often, I try to do the same thing. I like to change up my routes for a change of scenery and new discoveries. You see way more this way as opposed to driving by at 50-100kmh

If you watched the auction on tuesday there were some deals. They did the nice driver cars and the prices seemed to be fair. Last night the qualiy of some of the builds or restorations were better and the prices reflected that. I dont think the prices were stupid crazy when we all know what it costs to restore a car. Now tonight on the other hand things will probably get stupid crazy when the high rollers start showing up.. It will be interesting to see just how bad the economy is south of the border.

Absolutely, there was some good deals and some really nice resto's. Things do tend to get a touch out of perspective as the weekend approaches.

Every year I see something, I've never seen or heard of before, like Tuesday's auction, lot #114, a 1958 Studebaker, station wagon...

Wayyy too many Mustangs , Chevelles , Camaros ....first a red one , then a black one , etc . I was hoping the BJ site schedule would let me know the order of cars running but there doesn't seem to be any pattern ....you have to wait for something interesting .I do a lot of channel flipping .

The big laugh for me was a couple of years ago when two guys were bidding up the Volkswagon Mini Bus and got up over $200k . Crazy money .

So as predicted the prices shot up a bit on Thursday. However there were still some nice deals on a few of the cars. I know if I was ever going to build another car I would look very seriously at buying one already completed. I dont think I would want to pay the purchasers fees of 10%. But if the car was bought right who knows. You know some of the cars that went through yesterday were probably north of 60 to 70K and maybe more to build and selling between 25 to 40 K but that is JMO.

Thats why I said in other threads that the 52 was my last build. Even though I enjoy the work & swearing, & beer consumption!! It's just not worth it anymore.Theres no such thing as a CHEAP build unless you have lots of engines & trans. rear ends laying around, & you don't want an interior, or paint, or new weatherstrips & glass OR OR OR & trying to paint at home is getting harder with more GOV. intervention!!! Just look at the paint thread here & the costs being quoted for Materials alone!!! If I sell or trade the 64 I'll only be looking at "TURN KEY" from now on!!!!!

I hate B-J, have not even watched the last 2 years, too much crap, too little cars to watch, and yes he has screwed car prices for the average guy.
We go to a Mecum auction in Kissimmee Florida in January. Real nice folks, good mix of high and low prices. Lots of nice stuff and Thursday morning the stuff goes cheap, best day to buy.

Intresting you should say that because even when BJ goes to Florida there are some amazing deals that usually end up in the desert in January. Lots of guys will buy and flip at the auctions.

Has anyone noticed the monitors on the side of the stage and what they say. At the bottom is "estimate monthly payment". With the state of the economy in the U.S. and they will loan you the money at an auction to bid up something you can't afford. Maybe there is a smart banker in Scottsdale that is into cars. If he loans the money and a payment is missed he gets himself a collector car at a reasonable price after the inflated price has been paid off.

I think watching the auction and seeing some quality cars beats the hell out of any reality tv shows. Yes they play to the camera and some announcer's don't know a carbeurator from an injector, but to me it is a break from winter. Besides it is something to see some of the bidder's exercise their ego's. Ron Pratt for instance, bought a Charity car, am early 60's Chevy for $200,000 and then gave it back and said auction it again. Of course he happens to own the Phoenix airport and a construction company that builds a hundred thousand houses a year............I guess if you earn two million a day, dropping 5 million for a car is not such a big deal....................

look at it as entertainment, a few good cars to look at, a few nice ladie's standing around...............works for me

On the other hand, some of these BJ bidders are taking advantage of their 15 seconds of fame infront of the SPEED network cameras and

getting caught up in adrenaline rush of a famous auction

I saw a few cars that I recognized from B-J auctions last yr.??? 1 was the turg. 54 Kaiser Darrin w/sliding doors!! Don't think there a two that colour w/same colour top??? Assume the seller bought it last yr. & is flogging it or I have heard that some cars that were said SOLD didn't actually sell & owner got them back!!! Talked to a transport driver that said he sometimes takes the same car back to the same d/way after it 'supposedly SOLD!!!!

Funny how the press picked up on the Batmobile sale price, here is a link from CNN Money on the other auction top prices that were going on at the same time.

B-J Auction doesn't have the sway over me that it used to. Don't get me wrong, it is still good entertainment for us in the colder climates. A few years ago I enjoyed it more when my buddy and son and I used to bid on the fantasy cars and make bets. He's passed, my son doesn't have a TV where he lives (says the live streaming sucks big time) and it's not the same. But like I said, It's entertainment that's better than these reality shows!

The way I hear it ,the higher price cars are purchased by 4or5 people who then take turns buying it at different auctions till the price is high enough to make a profit for all of them and then they sell it.
