Hey all Got a line on a 50 Chev 3 window 1/2 ton truck. It has no engine or ownership. Says all the other parts are there. Needs typical cab corners and other metal work. Glass is all there and not broken. He is asking $2000. Sound fair? Here's a few pics of the truck. If anybody has a line on a 47-53 chev/GMC truck for sale, please let me know.
Not a bad price but if the cab corners are gone the floor is probably not too far behind. My advice is to keep looking and pickup something that needs less work, like someone elses unfinished project. Or, look on Kijiji .....you can pickup most of the major parts individually that are in far better shape. An ownership will cost you up to $500 (I don't think it's technically legal if you worry about that kind of thing). There's a guy at the Barrie Flea Market that sells them if you can't find one on-line.
What are you intending to do with your truck? Restore to original, Resto-mod, Kustom, pro-street, etc.
Thanks for the advice! I appreciate it. I wondered if the no ownership this would be a pain. Maybe that's why it's for sale? My plans would be to throw a corvette engine, front and rear suspension on the stock frame under it.
The no ownership would be a deal killer for me......Too much hassle
X2 here, local Lic. office told me to avoid that situation like the plague!!! Things have changed & it's harder to get ownership now!!!!
X3
It would have to be something I really wanted badly to go through through those steps. Second to that, I wouldnt risk too much coin in case the original owner happened to want it back

We bought an ownership for a 31 Ford from the guy at Barrie that Atomsplitter mentioned last year. It was no hassle at all getting an ownership for it. He will even give you a bill of sale to take to the MTO. BTW; those trucks are worth more without skirts !! LOL

Would this 1950 truck even have a VIN tag? From some reading I have been doing, it seems that the engine serial number is number that would be used on an ownership. Is this correct? Having a hard time getting to see it so I'd like to have as much info on this particular truck before I see it.
There are 3 different numbers that they use for the Serial number from, the motor, the frame and the door pillar. Between the 10 provinces, 3 territories and 50 states there was never a consensus which is the best one to use...that why it's so hard to get a new title in the US. At least in Canada we've had a system of records that change with every owner since the 60's. If you have a US truck without a title, you need a letter from each of the different owners stating they sold the truck to the next guy down the line. They call it an "Open Title" where the original owner signed the ownership when he sold it the first time, people didn't change the ownership into thier names because it took forever was expensive. The only thing you needed was an Open Title and a bill of sale, problem was that each guy was supposed to keep the previous guys bill of sale so after being sold 10 times it has a paper trail to trace back to the signature on the title. If the title is missing, the motor has been replaced, the frame rusted or the VIN plate is gone, sometimes it's impossible to register it for the road! I'd be worried that the guy in Barrie (or other like him) didn't do a search to see if there were any leans placed on the truck or if it was stolen way back in time. I'm just not that trusting of other people these days...
....and skirts DO make them cooler!

The ownerships that this guy has (100s) are all in one name. All these ownerships came from a wrecking yard here Ontario that was around 50-60 years ago. I guess the guy back then put everycar he took in, into his name. I found it odd too, because the ownership we got was last registered in the early 60s, but it had this guys name on it. Even the bill of sale we got had this guys name on it. It was my Buddy that bought it, and he had no issues at all registering it. If I go to Barrie this year, I will ask the guy with them what the story is behind these ownerships. He said in all the years he's been selling them, not one has ever been refused by MTO. I can't see he would be doing anything illegal, because he's been there in the same spot for years. I think the price was $300.
I'm not sure why an ownership is such an issue. In my experience it wasn't any problem getting a new ownership for my 57 panel van. I gave them a proof of purchase with a description of the vehicle and the VIN MTO did a search.... Found it wasn't registered in the seller's name. I had to hunt down the registered owner and get a signed letter stating she didn't own it any more. (turned out she was dead) MTO office pushed it through and gave me an ownership anyways. I asked him if the VIN wasn't legible what would my option be? He said they would assign a VIN to the vehicle. Similar to a home made trailer

I've always loved that style of truck. $2000 doesn't sound horrible to me although I am just going off the pictures. It could be a lot worse than it looks. Where did you say it was .

According to the seller, it has a vin tag in the drivers door jam. He also has the bill of sale from the person he bought it from. He seems to think it is no problem to get an ownership for it. I asked in some questions on the condition of the truck. He said it needs cab corners and box floor. It's all there with a factory heater but no rear bumper. Says it's complete and all original minus the engine but has a tailgate. He bought it that way. It also comes with an s10 chassis with a 3:42 posi rear. A chrome grill and an extra door. He pointed out a few times that it is a Canadian truck.
Sorry John but that PM didn't go through.
Oh and Pint and a Pound, it's parked under that tree with no leaves. LOL!

Sid - I just tried the PM again. Please let me know if you did not receive this one.
More thoughts: What model S-10 frame does he have. I think you need a long box standard cab to fit properly, there are a few sites to look up this information.
The nearest guy to me, about 6klm's away, is Bill's Truck Shop in Courtice, Ontario. http://www.billstruckshop.com/index.html I've never heard of anyone in the Napanee area. There are lost of guys using the Corvette IFS/RIS stuff these days and it sounds like they work really well too! Checkout the first link I posted for the 67-72chevytruck.com site and do a search. Flatout Engineering and Progressive make crossmember kits to use with all the Corvette goodies to make the installation easier.

Hey Atom! Not sure what the S10 frame is. I think your right on the SCLB. I think an ECSB will work too. Either way, I'm not interested in the S10 chassis. I want to use a corvette IFS and IRS on stock frame. I have a line on an 86 with rebuilt engine and trans 35000 KM ago for $3500. The seller of the 50 now says he's going to get an ownership for me. If he does, the truck will be at my place soon! I will see if he will get me the VIN and will give it to you to verify it's a Canadian truck. I appreciate the offer.
You happen to have any spare parts? Where would I be able to get patch panels locally? I know right off the bat I will need cab corners, radio delete plate and floor work.
I'm thinking that Colorado truck will cost a pretty penny in the end.
I am assuming the $3750 you mentioned is what it cost to buy it ... plus the cost of the rental U-Haul trailer ... plus the taxes at the border ... plus the extra fuel used to haul the truck and trailer ... plus the paperwork to get an Ont ownership (and appraisal) ... plus the extra amount added on for profit. Looks like a great starting point for a project, but it won't be cheap.
$400 for U haul he had to drive home anyway everyone has to pay tax..
no more to get a Ont ownership... everyone needs a appraisal
the truck is rust free
the frame, the cab, the doors, the hood, the fenders, It runs...
why would he add profit on to his own truck?
and you think you can save money buying one here? good luck

Hey all! Just an update. Went and looked at the truck yesterday. Nice enough guy. Chatted for an hour or so. Truck is rough in my opinion. I may be wrong and you all here may say "what do you expect for a 60 yr old truck". Keep in mind that this is the first classic truck or car for that matter, that I have looked at to buy. All four fenders will need replacing. Front fenders have been welded to the body and cab. The seam where the fenders meet the cab by the lower hinge and all the way up and around towards the head light. Rear tailgate hinges have been welded to the box. Box sides are full of rust holes. Tailgate is toast. The box rails are pretty straight and dent free. Driver door has no bottom 8" up. The steps on both sides have patches riveted on top. No cab corners or inside cab corners. Cab floor has multiple patches. If you ask me, the cab needs a complete new floor and all four corners, inside and out redone. It looks like there is a bit of bondo on the passenger window pillar. I'm afraid once the cab is blasted or stripped, more repairs will be uncovered. He mentioned on more than one occasion that parts are cheap out of the states. $25 for cab corners, $145 for a new tailgate etc. He told me about Bill truck shop for parts. To be honest, I don't think he realizes what it really needs. Maybe he does and that's why he is selling it. I kept my mouth shut on what I thought it needed. No sense offending him.
I took at look at Bill's website and it looks like it's gonna cost big bucks to get some usable tin for it. Question. With these southern cabs he has on his site, how can you put one of these on your truck and still register it here in Ontario? Just put the VIN tag off of the Canadian truck on the southern cab? That's not legal is it?
Right now, I'm disappointed on the condition it is in. Had my hopes up on a nice project for the kids and me to work on. Don't know what to do or think. These types of trucks don't show up very often in my area. I do know that it's not going to be in my driveway being priced at $2000. Am I crazy thinking it's still worth $1000? I told him I will get back to him in a few days. I did tell him that the truck was in worse shape that I expected and it maybe more work that I can handle. I was honest with him. He asked me to through an offer out a few times but I told him that I probably would be insulting him. We left it with me telling him I will get in touch in a few days.
Should I be walking away? No opinion will offend. You experienced rodders need to help us new guys out!
I think I would ask my self a couple of questions.what kind of tools do I have and what will I need to purchase, welders, grinders, various pullers, benders and clamps. This sounds like a long term project.Where will the work be done ,can I tie up the garage for 3-5yrs.Money wise this is going to be costley if you have to buy all those parts. How interested are the kids. Will everybody still be interested when they discover that the parts don't just fall off and magicly repair themselves. Some of this will be hard work as you can tell if you have followed the builds on this site.Having said all that, there is no satisfaction better than a build with your kids.Learning new skills and the satisfaction of actually fixing some part and best of all the first test fire of the engine then the first real cruise.Pick something that you know you can actually finish for a first project,if not this one than something will come along.Kijiji is full of projects that people have given up on so there is always something out there.Choose wisely and have fun. Ed
have you checked out this wrecking yard. hes near napanee. they have a great website. only thing is the pics are a couple of years old.
Roblin's Garage - Classic Auto Salvage 1840 Fish Lake Road (R.R.#2), Demorestville, Ontario, Canada K0K1W0 (613) 476-5479 Lawrence C. Roblin, Proprietor
i would also take a drive up to bills and have a talk with him about parts he sells complete trucks plus lots of original and repo parts. they are usually starting in the 5000 or more range so 2000 for a complete truck that needs restoration isn't unrealistic.

Thanks for the info Sacotu. Never heard of the place. Not too far away either.
flatblack55delivery, I have all the tools to do this other than the knowledge and experience as well as a 36X42 shop with a hoist to do it in. I just don't have any sheet metal shaping tools or body work tools like block sander etc. My kids are 11, 7 and 5 right now. They all like to play down in the shop with daddy till they get bored. I'd like to keep them all coming down to the shop and fooling around with me. Keeps them from spending too much time on the ipod, computer and video games. Even though they are kept away from that stuff, I want to keep it that way.
Search kijiji in the western provinces. They tend not to use salt on the roads due to the cold temps. There are TONS of awesome tin out there. But, like buying out of the US, its tough to trust anyone or anything you can't put your hands on.

Sorry, but by adding the word "yet", it sounded to me like you were suggesting that this particular truck might come up for sale soon and farmersid could buy it. All I am saying is farmersid should expect to pay more than $3750 for this particular truck because the present owner needs to cover his costs (trailer rental, taxes, appraisal, paperwork, extra fuel used dragging that truck and trailer back from the States etc) plus take home a little extra to make it worth his while. I am not saying it isn't worth it, I am not saying he can find better in Ont, I am saying farmersid isn't getting it for $3750.

I see what your saying Carl but the cost to have a vehicle shipped or even drive out west or south and back to get one, would add significantly to the cost. Around these parts, it seems one option is to buy a near basket case and buy a southern or western rust free cab and parts from places around here like Bill's and use that. That brings up the question of how do you use a southern cab on a Canadian truck? Lots to figure out.
If you can get out of the deal I would. You should take a look at Kijiji and see what individual parts are out there, I do it all the time just for my own curiosity and I've noticed that people think a rusted out vehicle is worth alot more because it's complete! If I had to do it again I would either look to spend about $4-6000 for a US truck is good shape, an unfinished project or buy the individual parts up here. Some parts are very expensive like stainless trim and perfect fenders but I've seen cabs & frames in good condition for $500 each. If you realize that you WILL spend $8000 to $10,000 on your truck and if your ready for that expense, your half way there! Consider what the cost in money and time it will be to bring that $2000 truck back to life, then consider what you could do with a rust free, road worthy truck for $5000. The better truck will be on the road much sooner letting you drive it in the summers and doing upgrades in the winter. I originally bought a '49 that looked like Swiss Cheeze when I got it home and lost $500 to get rid of it. I think it was about 6 months after buying my '48 I was going 90 mph on the 401 with a big grin on my face. I still haven't hooked up the radio and it's been on the road for 4 years!!! I didn't do this myself either, I had alot of help from DaveM.
Atomsplitter, don't be putting up numbers like that on what I may have into the truck! It will probably be more!...If the wife see's this thread, NO truck for Sid! LOL! I'd like to know where you're finding frames and cabs for $500. I've been searching non stop for a truck and parts. I see tons of crap with the price tag of gold. Some trucks are in too good of shape for what I want to do. Not looking to restore like it came off the assembly line. I'd like it to look somewhat stock on the outside but modern underneith. Kinda like yours Atom but maybe a little little bit more shine. I'm just not allowed to spend the 6g's on a truck that has rust on it and such. You guy's must know what I'm talking about. If I can spend less and it gets me out in the shop grinding and welding and sipping, the better half will be happier. "Happy wife's a happy life!"
If those are in the Newcastle area they must be well hidden or somebody brought in a bunch while I was sleeping. I e-mailed the guy asking for a time to meet to check out his truck(s). I'll let you know what I find out.
At one time there were at least 5 within a 5 kilometer area.
I went to see the truck this afternoon, took a bunch of pictures and posted then on Photobucket because they are 1.5mb each. The truck has an Ontario ownership, originally from BC, it's a chiort bed 1/2 ton. It's in what you would call "typical condition" for a 1951, or at least the doors are 1951 with the vent window and pull-down door handles. The floors are rusted as well as the kick panels but the hinge pocket areas on the door jambs look good as well as the rockers, The doors are solid! Bed is banged up. The rear of the cab is banged up and I think the cab corners were repaired at some time. It's about $1000 in repair parts for the floor. Passenger front fender is rusted at the seam where it meets the body but the rest are not bad at all. He's asking $4000 but he has had it in his heated garage for awhile now and realizes he's too busy to do the work. He's open to lower offers and he says that another guy is coming Saturday morning at 10:00am. I'd offer $2500 for it and hopefully settle somewhere at $3000. Consider what you were looking at before, does this look any better?
Thanks for making the link clickable Sacotu. Lots easier! That's cool of you to go and investigate the truck and take all those pictures! It appears to be in better shape than the one I looked at. If I gave you my wife's e-mail/phone number, would you put a good word in and convince her that Sid needs this truck and to not let this truck get away? LOL! The pattern I kinda see forming is that the ones that are priced right for their condition either never make it to Kijji or the internet or are gone in no time. I may be wrong with what little I know about these trucks. Anybody mind posting what they paid for their project truck when they first got it and what type of condition it was in compared to this one?
You find? I KNOW Gin works! LOL! I gotta new bottle on the way home from work tonight along with some lime's. Fireplace is going along with smelly candles. Gotta go and have a baggy wash! LOL!
I am the bartender. Mine has to be "stumbling" when I bring up the "So honey, I found a deal that is just toooo good to pass up ............" It doesn't take too many refills or very much mix before I can pop the question. I find to keep the "happy wife, happy life" mantra going, I have stop and remember the vows I was told to recite on that special day that reads "you're right, I'm wrong, you are everything, I am nothing". I betcha you all know too well........
A bottle of gin and..............later, the 52 is in her new home tonight. Atomsplitter, owe you a drink! We had fun unloading it! A few pints later, she was inside. If anybody's interested, I will post a few pics of her.

If I were you I'd just replace the cab instead of doing all that work! Why do bodywork when you can pickup a nice one for $1000? and The vin plate can easily be swapped over to the new cab.
