I have been dreaming and drooling over vintage and classic cars and hot rods my whole life, and all the while saying some day...well i would like that someday to be sooner rather than later. However, in the last year i have bought my first house, and welcomed my first child into the world, so needless to say time and money dont come around here too often!!
So what I am looking for is maybe some dudes that have a place, and projects on the go that I could maybe come hang out and learn with(mostly on the weekends). I have always been interested in mechanics as my dad use to race dirt and ice tracks up in Kenora, and has spent his life being a marine tech and tinkerer. I would like to think that some of those skills or traits rubbed off. I just wish i spent more time with him learning about motors and stuff when I was younger, but as it stands, I know very little (enough to be dangerous) about cars but would love to learn more..and one day soon...build my first car (rat rod pick up!!). I build custom alternative homes, so I am good with my hands, and can problem solve fairly well, and have had some welding experience back in high school and a night class in college. I am a quick learner, and hard worker, but love to laugh.
If there is anyone interested in helping out this rod rookie, with literally ANYTHING....time, parts, tools, equip, knowledge, patience, etc...I will be greatly indebted to you, and will try to repay you in some way or another!
I'm located just west of Ennismore Ont, north of Fowlers Corners.
You neeed to join a car club that has a shop. I think there's one still in Oshawa, the Motor City Car Club, they have a club on Taunton Road where they rent out spaces to their member to wrench on their cars (I guess if they don't have a garage at home). You never know?
1432 Taunton Rd, Oshawa, ON L0B 1J0 (905) 576-3039
Im in Omemee and occasionally have a few friends over when pulling engines ect, usually on newer cars, 80-s to mid 90's. We are all 22-25 however, young folk.
well i have a shop and i am building a rat rod truck, ur welcome to drop by and keep me supplied with green teas. cobourg might be a bit of a haul but im more than happy to lend an ear and shoot the sh!t. dont let kids and wife and such things get in the way of a good project.

I can totally undestand where you are at. Since I was a wee kid, I always dreamed about having hot rods etc. and found that raising a family and paying a mortgage, home renovations, RSPS etc didnt leave much left over for the variety of hobbies that I have. I've had several project cars and trucks that I only ever partially completed due to cramped work space, loss of interest and minimal left over "play money". My problem was that I always tore the damn things so far apart, made bigger plans than I was willing or could afford to commit to and then I would lose interest. I'm almost embarrased to say that I've never in fact completed a project to the point of actually driving them. I've resolved to finish my current project no matter how long it takes, but one thing is for certain...my next project will be a driver first and foremost and a project for winter months only. I'm only going to undertake upgrades that I can complete over a 4-6 month period so I can actually DRIVE it.
As for learning - like everyone said, join a club or group. Ask away any questions you have, thats what this forum is for!

I Google mapped your area, there's not much around you. From my experience, there's usually a car guy in every small community, they're easy to spot, something for sale at the end of the driveway etc..., this is the perfect occasion to approach the person. Most car guys will be happy to show you what ever else they may have, compliment them, let them know what you'd like to do etc... It will more then likely work out for you, most of us always need a hand, holding something, etc.. Personally, the wife's a good helper and doesn't mind helping, but I would really prefer having someone else, LOL. Friends are not always available.
I live about 25 minutes or so from Fowlers Corners. I also design custom homes for people.
I have a fully outfitted shop for all intents and purposes.
My builds are a full time truck for pulling making in the neighbour hood of 1200 hp, a 65 Mercury truck that is a gasser, and a 72 Chevelle that is gettin an 8.1 l 4L80E transplant
Usually there are one or more projects being done for other people .
Currently i am building a new race diesel engine. 90% of which is mostly totally custom, one off parts I have designed and fabricated
You care to introduce yourself, and are willing to come hang out - then you are more than welcome.
You need to supply the beer now n then though lol
If you cant learn most of what you wish while at my shop - its because your not payin attention lolololololololol, as I have been known to do everything from basic concept/art drawings to finish upholstery and paint
my email is ckr5610@hotmail.com
anyone else wishes ot intro themselves and or join in - the shop is usuallu open 7 nites a week, and most weekends - when i am not playin with or babysittin my grand daughter
:)

Hey Chance, Joining a club would be a good idea as the others have mentioned, allowing you to meet new people and perhaps get involved in some projects.... If you're interested I'm hoping to start a Rat Rod pickup project this year (but depends on some things coming together lol) I'm just outside of Lindsay off Hwy 7... I'm sure I'm going to need a hand with stuff. I love meeting others that have the same vintage vehicle/hot rod/rat rod interest I do... you'd be more than welcome to come hang out. I am by no means a book of automotive knowledge though as I'm still learning myself haha...
Hey Dudes, Thanks for reading and replying to my post for help!
To SKAR: No I dont have a project yet. My neighbour has what looks like a 30's to possibly early 40's pick up in her back yard, that i believe is owned by one of her young sons that I was gonna maybe inquire about come spring..it looks fairly complete, and whats sad is that its just parked on grass with a sh*tty tarp covering it, with some wood and tires on top...I would love to breathe new life into that beauty of a machine.
To Flatblack/Atomsplitter/Gearhead/Gazoo: Thx for the advice! I will look into some of those car clubs. But dont you usually have to have a car to belong to a club? Cuz if so i am severely lacking in that department...unless you consider a 1987 Ford F-150 Flatbed 4x4 a rod? heheh
To Fatstax: Thx for the offer! Colbourg is a fair bit of a jaunt, but who knows, come summer time I might just blow in with the wind!
