I'd like to make a swamp cooler for my truck and I picked up this 1950's Vaccum as a start because it's the right length, made of steel and the general shape...round.

Unfortunately I no fabrication skills and wanted to know if anyone has tried to make one themselves.

*Yes it works and no, I don't want to just buy one!

I've been looking for a couple of years. a swamp cooler will run you $200- $500. ask yourself.. How much will I pay someone to turn a vacuum into a non-functional vacuum?
Plus when you go to car shows the people who know what a swamp cooler is... will wonder what is hanging off the side of your car/truck

If I had that vaccum I would leave it at home. This way my wife would have something to do at home when I'm at the car shows!! LOL

If you clear out the innards and use one end as is to direct cool air into the car with a short hose, maybe you could turn the other end around to act as a scoup. One or the other could be removable to add the ice and just add a drain for the water .It has lots of chrome on it and just paint the body flatblack to match your truck an you are away.Seems like a dooable project ,with a few hand tools to me.Some of those propaine heaters have ends that kinda look like a swamp cooler intake maybe something like that would work. Seeing that vacuum makes me ponder.... why is everything made these days so ugly and made from inferior plastic? That thing is very cool looking and could be made to look waaaay better than an original authentic swamp cooler!

This what I did with my vacuum cleaner. An industrial style,20 gal .Removed the motor from the top to make a flat surface, covered with plywod.Keeps the 3 lock tabs for the lid. Then inserted my 60ft.SOW 12/3 ext.cord with dual recepticale Crouse Hinds cast aluminum box.The male plug is inside and the box hangs out the "hose side"of the vac. canister. Makes a good roll around seat too. smile

That the one Fatchuk, made by Thermador!
....and no I don't really care if anyone doesn't like what my truck looks like, as long as they don't like some much that they kick the doors in! or steal my skirts!!

I picked up a pair of stainless steel water filled fire extinguishers that might do the job too!

It'd be a shame to cut up that old vaccum.

Found one on the HAMB, its a Firestone, located in Michigan. It's totally original, too good of a deal to pass up and it already has patina! Should be here in a week/months.
Anyone need a pair of shiney Class A (water) fire extinguishers?
