Jeff Gordon turned back the clock Sunday afternoon, winning his first race of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Seriesseason with a late pass of Matt Kenseth in the Goody's Headache Relief Shot 500 powered by Kroger atMartinsville Speedway.
It's Gordon's eighth victory -- and, therefore, eighth grandfather clock victory trophy -- at the Virginia short track, the oldest venue on the circuit. The win was the 88th of his career.
His No. 24 Chevrolet was sporty all day, leading 78 laps. The veteran took the lead for good on Lap 480 when Kenseth caught lapped traffic. Kenseth had led the previous 105 laps.
but Jimmy don t need the trophy for the race he s going to have the big 6 million $ plus cheque ............................. I want Jeff to win and the 88 to crash for my perfect race season

next week is Gordon race ..............as long as the 88 crash I ll be ok ...I never seen so much publicity made about him grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr for nothing
Congrats to the winners and thanks to Poncho it was fun .Next year I may rethink my choice of an all Petty and Allison team ,it didn't work out as planed. Ed
1 more week before Jimmy wins again getting real boring Like going to the Horse races and the same old nag wins every week
I'll buy everyone a beer if Jimmy crashes and doesn't win again
It's still pretty good racing though, better than when the cars were amazing and the racing wasn't - sometimes the winner would lap the entire field back in the day. Tell me people weren't getting just a little tired of "The King" Petty winning everything in the 60's and 70's. I also witnessed the Earnhart Dynsasty in the 80's and 90's by simply bumping everyone else into the wall (you learned pretty quick to move over and let him take your spot), but by then the cars were ugly slab sided and not very stock.
Ideally, we need 60's cars with the tight racing and close points battles we see these days - that would make my day!
