Really need to know how you intend to use it to give you a fair answer. do you intend to use it for work? what do you plan to throw in it most.. ect..... Good winter tires will be a cheaper and better investment for the area you will be in as compared to a 4x4 . Once I installed them on my truck the only weight i have is my tool box compared to 800lbs before wouldn't consider not running them now .

The reason I would prefer it safetied, is my tools are going to be in a container for a couple of months till we buy our house, so I won't be able to work on it.
I have no idea how Canada works with the safety test, and how strict it is, and if you have "friendly" testers of not. In the UK I could find a sympathetic tester who would pass the car, but tell me I need to repair this or that immediately. Is it similar over there?
The 3K figure is really just a shot in the dark. I can go up a bit, but I don't want to spend to much on my first truck in case I hate it and want to switch sides, lol.
I will initially be using the truck just for hobby/taking the kids places, etc, not for work. But I want to be able to pick stuff up, like furniture, new tools etc. Not a lot of miles, so bigger engine isn't a problem.
Oh, does anyone have any recommendations for insurance companies?

Hey Dave...I have a friend with a gas powered mid-late 90's 4x4 460ci extended cab, ford long box, captins chairs, power windows, center console that I think is for sale around your price range and I don't think it will need much to certify but I'll have to check to be sure. It was on the road full time up until he got his new truck in November and I think it is still currently plated and legal. I will get a few pics tomorrow and more details for you. I will send you a PM. Regards Kurt

So we will finally be in Canada on Thursday, and I want to buy a truck asap.
Budget is up to 3K for my first venture into truck ownership. Here are my requirements:
Extended cab (to take the kids/dog
V8 preffered, but it must at least be gas, not diesel
4x4 would be nice but not essential
Certified and safetied preffered
Bodywork doesn't need to be great, it's a truck! lol
Interested in:
Ford F150 (Step side preffered)
Chevy Silverado
Dodge Ram
Seen a lot on Kijiji and the F150 seems to be the most modern for the money, but I would appreciate any advice/recommendations, as you all know this is a new minefield for me ;)
O by the way my winter beater ranger extended cab cost me 200 bucks and two lower ball joints to certify . after 4years and over 100,000 k im still under 2,000 invested.
''hobby/taking kids places etc not for work, want to haul furniture new tools etc.''................that,s got minivan written all over it, those things have mega room in them, easy to find cheap and comfortable to drive

Thanks Kurt, that sounds ideal.
So would that be a F250 then? and is it the older squarer version, which looks almost classic.

Dave, it's great having you around. You are definitely perpetuating the Scottish stereotype.
The most abundant, would be the Ford F-150, basically because there are lots on the road. As far as price, there will be the usual factors such as, mileage, condition and options. If, you have been keeping up with the forms here, then you know that one of the biggest concerns will be if it can pass the idiotic, Ontario emissions testing. The safety/certified part has nothing to do with the emissions part.
If you are considering the truck that Kurt mentioned above, don't be looking for Scottish fuel mileage. Hi Kurt

I await your reply
Might be a f250 but I'll have to check. It's a ford so I don't really pay attention. I'll stop over later this morning and get pics and details. I am pretty sure it passed emmissions not to long ago (nov. 2012).
If it the one with the captin chairs its at least a 250 more likely a 350 cool as hell . looked at one in 99 and would of picked it up but it wouldn't fit in the drive way were I lived at the time . If it 97 or bellow all it has to pass is the idle test but it will still be good for two years if it past in nov.
Here are some pics for you Dave. PM also Sent with details of vehicle and owners contact information.
Sorry forgot to check milage
I will be gone to Daytona Bike Week in Florida when you get to Canada but give the owner a call if you are interested and we will have to meet up at another time. Good Luck and Welcome to Canada!
With all the plumbing there i first tought it was a diesel, but then i saw the Distributor. Bit of spot rust but thats understandable at that age, nothing that will hurt it in certification!! Out insp. here are "nowhere" near what a MOT is in the UK !!!!

When you get here if you need any help with a saftey or e-testing ..Send me a pm I may be able to help ..I run a little red-neck shop and have a little flexability ..I am about an hr and a half from Ancaster Hamilton area.. St.Marys Ont. N4X 1C4 postal code..I do think you should consider just renting a car for a week or two till you get your bearings..you can rent a car reasonable for a that time till you take a look at whats available ..I think you just may want to think on a bit before you get something you may regret or wish you hadn't.. There are no shortage of used cars and trucks in this area..there are plenty..to pick from..there is also a lot of money pits out there and buying your self a problem is pretty easy..so be carefull..It's buyer -beware...
There's lots out there for that price. I just picked up a 2001 Chev HD2500 certified and etested for $3000.00. Body is in good shape...no rust... You just gotta keep looking. If you're not gonna have your tools handy for a while, go for a legitimite safety and etest to save on short term headaches. Good luck Dave. Look forward to meeting ya. And, ah, keep er on the RIGHT side of the road when you do get behind the wheel, eh?

hahaha, thanks for all the advice, especially the bad advice!
Sometimes you get lucky, and find the right vehicle first time. I have been chatting with Kurt about the truck he has suggested, and it sounds pretty good. He has driven it, so has first-hand experience of it over a length of time. Surely that is better than taking a chance on a random truck off Kijiji etc?
I'm not saying I'm definitely going to buy it, and I WILL walk away if my spidey senses start to tingle, but this is why I asked you guys on this forum for help.
And I'm putting my foot down on the minivan idea. Sorry, just can't do it, don't care how sensible it is, lol.
You can all rip the pish out of me at our first meet if it all goes pete tong ok?

Sorry, I never actually replied to your post.
You are of course completely correct with the minivan suggestion, however..... it's not a truck.
You need to remember I am coming over to "live the dream", which includes trucks, basement rec rooms, weekend fishing by the lake and summer evening barbeques, mosquitos and all, lol.

Dave a minivan is a multi-pupose truckand quite pratical here for a temporary vehicle till you get your feet on the ground..You can pull the seats out pretty fast , they are plentiful, give decent fuel milage, hold a lot of stuff with the seats out, protects your stuff from the elements, easy to work on parts are plentiful..and in 3 months when you you have had time to find the truck you "WANT" for a keeper you will be able to unload the minivan with out losing much..I would not overlook that as option...I know it's not the dream but buying something in a hurry can soon spoil the dream and turn it into a bad dream..Spring is just around the bend and there will be a ton of swap meets and cool old trucks for sale that are road ready will hit the spring market soon..Patience will help to bring some fruition to that dream..I don't know to many guys that would consider pushing a 460 4x4 around all summer at 8miles pergal @ $1.40 a ltr with the amount of driving you and traffic you will driving in that would consider that the dream...This is a big province and seeing doing the things you will want to see and do will cost big time in a big 4x4 ..I am just saying take your time till get off the plane and get your feet wet here..Hey it's your dream..you do it the way you want ..just tryin to offer some real advice .
Welcome here to Canada Dave, like the guy's are saying do some "shopping". With some searching you can find what you need to fit your budget. We picked up a 1998 S 10 short box with 172,000 kms,4 banger, auto for $1000 and then $300 to saftey (Repair a body mount) Excellent body as well! The previos owner oiled the piss out of it!

the best thing about a mini van is you can wear your skirt and no one will say anything.... To be honest Pick up the best cheap thing you can find and save your money for a hot rod . you should be able to run it 8 or 9 months of the year in this area.
I am starting to lean more towards the F150 again. It looks more modern, has a smaller engine and there's more about, and cheaper too. Seen two on Kijiji for under 2K, one is even safetied etc.
You are not going to persuade me to get a minivan, sorry.
I am a strong believer in "the journey is the reward", and I have never bought a car with my head. We are also used to high powered thirsty expensive to run cars in the UK, and with our gas prices that's crazy.
So we have factored in the high running costs and weighed them against the fun factor. Economy loses. If I wanted to save money I would take a bus.
If you get stuck ,stoped past my old bosses place today in burlington he had his wifes 300m there loaded leather 3l 250 hp 190.000 on engine 300 or 3000 on tranny inside looks like new only thing I could see wrong was a few paint bubbles on edge of the hood . old proper english dude anal as only they can be asking 2000 still plated . if your stuck on a newer truck extended cab 99 up chev or gmc will get better gas mileage and have more room in the back then the ford
You would have to get it safetied and e-tested yourself after buying it. They most likely had it looked over and decided it would cost too much for them to do for it to be worthwhile as well as the risk selling it with that mileage safetied.
You could put it in your name with an unfit title, but could not legally drive it.
You can change the registration it into your name as an unfit vehicle, pay the HST, you can't get license plates, you can't drive it and you can't even get a temporary transit sticker, so with 315,000km and the seller won't e-test or certify should tell you to keep looking.
He could if he had ins and a 10 day permit,it would cost $15, plus the car pack$20, plus the tax?,plus the plates$20 if I remember correctly .The second one would only cost the $15.You are allowed 2 a year and these allow you to drive the car or truck while you are getting the needed repairs. We use this option often and it comes in quite handy. It allowes you a max of 20 days to get a vehicle legal. Ed
Just my opinion, but I think a guy in your situation, who needs something now, that is deendable etc, who doesnt have the setup for a fixer upper....should go to a dealer and get something that is certified, e tested...on the road.
There is a dealer up here with a sign out front, says "Specialzing in Vehicles under $5000"....Should be able to find someone like that around there
Tell them you want your mechanic to look at it which happens to be the close'st crapy tire and for them to put there dealer plate on it and drive it there if it checks out ok you will buy it. if they say no walk away , priced to high to begin with . your allready at 4370 with tax and plate and you havent repaired anything yet!!! for half that it might be worth a roll of the dice. but I doubt it.
