electric hotrod

I have just acquired a 29 Ford roadster frame and body. I was thinking of making an electric hotrod out of it.

Any suggestions on how I would get started? or do any of you know of any that have been built?

An electric hot hot rod wouldn't interest me ..I love the sound of a Detroit V8 and some-how electric just doesn't do it for me..if it don't rumble it ain't a rod maybe a cool golf cart.. good luck on your project here is a pic of one..A high tech golf cart... smile

But it will never be a hot rod in the traditional sense...McGuinty may have a solar plan for you help with the finances.. biggrin biggrin biggrin

That is still an impressive build!!

Back a few years ago on that show called "Fast times" ???? (Where the three guys guess your'e et before you run), there was an S-10 there that was electric, and i can't remember the ET now, but that truck was "FAST!!!!!!!!"

I have a friend that just built a 1929? Ford pickup which is all electric.
I need to ask why you want to do this? If this is a dream you've always wanted to build then no one will stop you !! If you don't know 100% what you're getting yourself into, then run away from this project as fast as you can.

Electric vehicles are excellent except for one major flaw, the batteries !! An electric vehicle would be a blast to drive with that instant torque, just don't expect to drive long distances.
If I can't talk you out of this $50000 mistake you're getting yourself into, then PM me and I'll give you the name of the person that actually built one.

Buy a Chevy Volt. Change the body. Not a electric only, but works really well.

HemI and I saw this pick-up build. Neat project, but the controller and motor was more than $15000. Batteries, chargers, balancers all on top of that. Looking at $20k plus to have limited range.

Factory Five had one at SEMA. The designer we talked to was all ticked because the powers that be decided to mount the controllers above the motor to look like valve covers.

I'm impressed that he gets 100 mile range with it. Mind you, it's all highway. Someday there will be viable electric vehicles, but we are many years away unless someone comes up with a breakthrough in compact electrical energy storage. Unfortunatelly, gasoline/diesel powered vehicles will still be around for a long time.

i saw a video of an anglia a guy built, electric with a honda 16 hp engine to charge the batteries, gets 200mpg. uses motorcycle tires to reduce friction. if i can find a video i will post it

i think there is a u tube video of a guy with a like datsun b 210 elektrik drag car, in Australia , New Zeland etc , , which i think also gets street driven ..77.

Thanks for all of the replys and or suggestions, Hemi 43 and 58chev thanks for the link I have done some more research online and found kits being made in Vancouver for around $5000.00 and lithium ion batteries for about the same price. I think I can build the whole car for about $20,000.00. I will post the build online if I decide to go ahead with it

My friend that built the electric Ford pickup owns a battery business, and imports everything you'll need. He actually built it for a customer.

A guy I know converted a '92 Tercel to fully electric. His top speed is around 70kph and he can do an approximately 60k round trip with it before he needs to recharge.

Not great but pretty impressive for his first attempt. It uses an electric forklift motor and control system. If you ignore the back seat full of batteries it looks stock.

The nice thing about our hobby is the opportunity to build what you want, the way you want it. While I love the sound of open headers nothing matches the instant torque of electric. Build on Brian and keep us posted.

It's all about battery capacity. The right decision at the begining will save a pile 'o cash in the end.

Also keep in mind that voltage is your freind. Better efficiency and lower current loads with higher voltages.

GM hybrid trucks and the Volt run 300v battery packs. Safety first!

So you're saying that to check if there's voltage present I should use a voltmeter and not my tongue !! biggrin biggrin

Had a look at the mto site looks like you can convert from gas to electric but then you have to stick big stupid caution stickers on the front and rear window no mention of home built but they did make a point of saying you will need your old registration from the donnor car. Good point no cents in building it if they wont let it on the road

I read a while ago that Ont was not allowing home built electric vehicles to be registered. Anyone have any more info on it?

A conversion vehicle can be registered in Ontario.

The sticker "Electric Vehicle Conversion" in the front and rear window is for the safety of emergency response team, in case of an accident and they need to use the jaws of life to crack open the car.

Notice for Cyl = 00 and Power = E

Just don't waste a 29 Roadster if you're gonna goof around building an electric car,please....There are plenty of ho -hum
body shells out there that will not be a hate crime to build,stand back from the roadster and no-body gets hurt! Remember, I said please!
