Ok, so in my home town - lives Harry Sherry - the worlds most renowned and winning car restorer - having won an unprecedented 2 times at Pebble Beach with his work
Anyone who knows anything about car restoration knows you dont win Pebble Beach - never mind twice
So HArry is wanting to retire at the ripe old age of some 75 years - and his two grand sons who are and have been his proteges for the last 13 years are taking over the shop
So heres the deal - Pebble Beach workmanship for $45 an hour - all day long - from complete from nothing except a hubcap and some history type restorations, to hotrod and custom work or just amazing paint work.
Name your poison - these boys have yet to be beaten world wide for their craftsmanship
so how do i go about effectively promoting my friends here - they are world renowned - but have never advertised before
and as younger people - they wish to expand from deusenbergs n such into more mainstream hotrods and customs
they do metal work that is just amazing
thoughts and ideas most welcome
thanks KEn
IMHO, the best thing they could do is open their business in the US. They may be good in their craft, but so are many others. The border will pose their biggest obstacle in growing their business because most, if not all their customers will be Americans. I'm too old now and have too many anchors keeping me here in Canada, but If I had to do it all over again I would be heading South. If they're only charging $45 per hour, it wont be long before they will be forced to close the door. Like I said, just my opinion.
they are not just good at what they do - thier double wins at Pebble Beach make them the very best in the world at what they do
so there are definitely not any competitors in the US at what they do cuz the other Pebble Beach winners were European if memory serves - and what there are in the US is the the Fooses n such that have been revelled in the Magazines and on TV - which is where these guys want to be now as they have won everything there is to win in the big concours curcuits.
Think Riddler - that is the quality of work they have to offer.
:)
All that aside - they are trying to upscale their business and I offered to help get the word out there, that they are available for hotrods n customs now as well.
Staying in Canada worked for RM, if you're good at what you do the work will follow. But it is easier in the US because of the larger customer base.
Seeker, they need a website to showcase their work, then you just have to post a link Restorations are one thing, Hot Rods and Customs are a whole different game.
Foose had a plan as did Coddington, Tucci, RPM , and all others who have succeeded in the business. I belive their secret is that they produced a high end car that promoted their work and put that car out for public exposure.
Older ones Barris: Ala Kart, Batmobile, 100 others Dean Jeffries: manta ray, Monkeemobile
So I've been to Harry Sherry's and am amazed by and appreciate his work. Dirt floors and show quality paint, casting pieces that are not available anywhere, and all with a shop rate of only $45 per hour.
My advice would be to build a car that represents what you can achieve, promote the hell out of it and create a name for yourself. Boyd, Foose and Troy are all brands now. They are smart businessmen who know how to generate business. You can do it in Canada too. I know a guy near me who has built a Ridler great 8 contender and he now has a waiting list for customers who want them to build for him now. It has nothing to do with where we live but what we do. Don't be a typical Canadian: Show and tell people what you can do!

foose, boyd and troy capitalized on a trend and made a ****load of money from it, they can hardley be compared to the older customizers who defined styles and trends, boyd got famous building 32 fords slathered in billet everything, troy and foose lapped up his table scraps. ironic in the end boyd went to his grave hating foose and considered him the enemy. not exactley a positive driving force in the hot rod scene.
I grew up in Peterborough. I remember the name and have seen some of his work. In our circles Harry Sherry was this mystical car guru that no one ever saw, and always did high end work. I hope his grandsons can do well.

Shop rate is only relative to the amount of cost of overall expenses. I think the diferance here is they are starting with an established shop likely payed for years ago with all the equipment they need. By the sounds of it they have been at it for a few years and should know what there costs are.Maybe there grandfather hasn't just past along his skills but some old fashion values as well. Quality work at a resonable price is so rare today that you automaticlly assume the worst. I hope they do well . To few people spend there life doing what they have a passion for and waste away trying to get ahead
I must be missing something here !! If Harry Sherry, quote, "the worlds most renowned and winning car restorer "is handing the business down to his Grandsons, the business would already be established and would have a list of clientele. I don't see why they would need advertising if they are "world renowned".
Harry Sherry and Reg Beer from Bolton are both from the same generation where quality work and word of mouth was all you needed. Reg's sons took over a number of years back and had a web site built for the business, they continue restoring mainly British cars in an isolated shop off the beaten path, in fact a subdivision has been built up around them. Harry continued on word of mouth and how many people even know where Warsaw is or drive by? So firstly have someone build them a website, next at least get an ad in Old Autos which most car guys in Canada receive. Harry has always been strong in the Classic's but beyond that group, few know about him. If they want to get into the hot rods and musclecars they need to get there work out there so people can see what they do, cars hidden away in museums and private collections won't get you new customers. I'm sure the grandsons have hot rods of their own, they need to blitz every show/ cruise night they can with their cars showing off their workmanship.
