If it hit a light standard it would be hard to shed light on it (40 years ago)

Yes, I remember that one. I think it was in winter time and we were doing donuts on the snow. If I remember correctly, he hit the concrete base of the light pole, dead centre in the front of the car. It was a fairly young person, so I'm not sure about him owning a store.

I'm not too sure, but....the driver looked quite young. The car looked a bit rough even before it hit the pole. We didn't give it a second look. Those cars were not in demand back then. That's about it, I'm afraid.

Hamilton, being The Steel City, I imagine that car ended up at Waxman's soon after. Waxman's being the biggest scrap yard at the time.

I know this is an old thread, but I just found this site.

In researching the history of my Superbird, I contacted Bill Johnston at www.johnstonchrysler.com and his father (Jim) said that they sold an orange Superbird.

Some other contacts I made said that they are pretty sure that this was the car that was wrapped around the pole.

It is a long story!!! After searching for several years, I got a lead on one in Toronto. I bought it in 1990 and found the previous owner in Owen Sound (who repainted it black) . Then found the first owner In Durham who bought the car in 1973 and had it painted plumb crazy purple. He said the car had been a pace car at a speedway near Barrie.

Several years went by before I started to research its history before 1973. I had planned to restore the car back to the original assembly line condition, but kept wondering about its pace car history.

I made many internet inquiries in 2002 and finally found Nate Salter. He used to write articles on stock car racing in Ontario and remembered the car at Sunset Speedway, Barrie, Ontario. He was working at the track at the time as the handicapper and scorer.

I then placed an ad in the Barrie Examiner to indicate I was restoring this Superbird that I believed was used as a Pace Car at Sunset Speedway and asked if anyone knew the car, to give me a call. I received 3 phone calls and one led me to Glen Shakell, who was the owner of Sunset Speedway in the late ‘60’s and early ‘70’s. He confirmed that it was featured as the pace car at Sunset Speedway (near Barrie) in 1971 and 1972. It was provided by Jackson’s Motors Ltd, who was the Chrysler-Plymouth dealer in Barrie.

Glen provided me with a 8 ½ x 11” colour photo of the car when it was the pace car in 1971. It was repainted for the 1972 season in Labatts 50 gold. This finally explained why I found 4 different colors on the car!!

After much debating, I restored the car as it was for the 1971 Pace Car.

I started to disassemble the car in 1996 and finished the restoration 16 years later in 2012!!! In 2013, I was invited to bring the car back to Sunset Speedway to pace the races!!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5GoMcVWETE8

I'm still trying to find out which dealer it was that first got the car from Chrysler. I know the car was at Wentworth Chrysler-Dodge in Hamilton according to a mechanic who worked there. It was delivered to Wentworth from a Plymouth dealer somewhere. According to some people, there are 2 possibilities: Islington Chrysler-Plymouth or Raceway Plymouth-Chrysler in Rexdale.

I'm still trying to find out which dealer it was that first got the car from Chrysler. I know the car was at Wentworth Chrysler-Dodge in Hamilton according to a mechanic who worked there. It was delivered to Wentworth from a Plymouth dealer somewhere. According to some people, there are 2 possibilities: Islington Chrysler-Plymouth or Raceway Plymouth-Chrysler in Rexdale.

Islington Chrysler still had their new blue Superbird in the showroom in the Fall of 1972. My parents almost bought it! They were looking at ordering a 73 Fury and were choking on the price (over $5k) when I suggested the Superbird. They had less than zero interest until I said it was only $4,000 AND was a stick shift, which were the only selling points for them. The salesman said even the $4000 was negotiable. They started to look at it but when my dad saw the snout, he said it probably wouldn't fit in the garage, which was a must. The salesman looked up the length and my dad and I spent a couple of hours measuring the garage every which way, but the Superbird was 1/2" too long. My dad (an engineer) looked at whether the door could be moved out an inch or so, or if a different door would help. Alas, it was not to be.

Too long??? Oh no!!!!! Great story!!
I now believe my Superbird was first delivered to Jackson Motors (Kitchener) Ltd and then it went to Wentworth Motors (1968) Ltd - which was also owned by the Jackson family. One of these days I'll have to go to Kitchener and look up some old newspaper ads to see if it was advertised by the dealer.

Ross Somerville worked at Wentworth Motors. He bought a hemi Dodge there.
He ended up living out here on Vancouver Island. Up by Nanaimo. On Protection Island.
He had a brother (maybe passed) in Hamilton that may have had a T- roadster.
Ross could possibly know a lot more about that car that hit the pole at the Centre Mall.

I had corresponded with Ross several years ago and he sent me a photo of the car at Barrie after he drove it from Hamilton. Before that, he drove the car for several months. Joan and superbird.jpeg

Wentworth Motors was a Ford dealer before Dodge. My Dad bought a new '54 Ford there.
