From Don Garlits
Dear Friends,
My long life buddy, partner and friend died at home this morning at 6 AM. This was the final result of an Airboat accident several years ago, Art was injured severely and never fully recovered. I talked to him on March 27th and he was in good spirits, thought he had lost a lot of weight. ...The brute of a man was down to 175 pounds, my weight! His wife Sandra was at his side.
It grieves me to write this, but I must as Art and I go a long way back, in 1942 we rode the Twin Lakes School bus together, became friends and never had a quarrel. Art was younger than I, but a tall boy and timid at that young age. I once beat up a bully that was picking on him and we have been very close ever since. Art initially started racing round track cars and I once borrowed a flathead Ford engine out of his stock car to run an event while my engine was being repaired, I won with Art’s engine, but he continued to race the round tracks. Then in 1959, I was burned severely and Art and his wonderful late wife Lorraine came to the hospital and he offered to drive the Swamp Rat I car while I recuperated. Art took to Drag Racing like a “Duck to Water”, setting the new Drag News 1320 Record at his first outing in Sanford Maine, 183,66 MPH, breaking my old record set at Houston TX the week before the Chester fire. Art continued to raise the 1320 record several times and in 1960 built his own car at Al Williams shop in Kansas. He won the US Fuel and Gas Championships held in Bakersfield CA in 1963 with his own home-built car, Ed Iskenderian was his Crew Chief! He set the oval track record of 181.561 MPH at the Daytona Speedway on August 28th 1961, receiving the $10,000.00 prize posted by Bill France of NASCAR fame for the first person over 180 on a closed course, driving the “Mad Dog” a winged version of an Indy car, built by the late Bob Osiecki from Chester SC. The “Mad Dog” now rests in the Don Garlits Museum of Drag Racing as a tribute to this man’s many accomplishments. We teamed up again in 1984 putting “Garlits and Malone” on Swamp Rat 26, a car removed from the museum and refitted with modern parts purchased by Art to be able to run the 1984 NHRA US Nationals, we won the race, the competitors were calling us “Dinosaurs”, we then proceeded to the NHRA World Finals, winning again! Art and I then won the NHRA World Championships two years in a row, 1985 and 1986. Art was inducted into the Drag Racing Hall of Fame in 1997 and he supported the Museum from the very beginning. This is just a brief summary of Art’s life, as it would take an entire book to list it all, he was a man’s man and will be missed by all racing fans and competitors.

Please circulate widely.
Thanks,
Don Garlits

Thanks for that  John.. I really did not know Art.  I did not follow that racing circuit much ..young and struggling to raise up my family no money or time during those years..lots of school stuff, scouts, baseball games, hockey, no money for cars for about a 10 year span..I did live right next door on Forward ave to Herby Rogers from London and worked with him at Middlesex motors when I was doing my apprecticeship back in the early sixties..I spent a lot of time when I could in Herbs garage with his most excellent mechanic Elaine ..I never see or hear much about Herbs acomplishments..Our generation is fading away..lot of our trail blazers are now history..

I believe it was the end of Nov 30th- 2002 that Herby took on a new drag race... I have not seen or had any contact with Herb or his family Since We moved to StMarys in 74...I beleive Gordy Has a little sort of speed shop in London out around the Hyde Park Area... I used to have all my Machine work done at a shop next door to his ..I think Gordy and his boy still raced a lot but it was during a time I was off raisng the family and put cars and adrenalin into being a daddy.. I haven't seen Gord for 15 years ,don't even know if he is still around ..hell were only old in our body ..I am just one of those guys stuck in the 50s-60s lots of neat stuff in the 21st century but, I really like the old days I just remember having a pretty good time for my time  didn't get hasseled by the police the way we/they seem to now most times if we got stoped we got a lecture from the cop heck lots of times we knew him ..guess I'm rambling I have not really seen Herb get much recognition Here in his home town ..I was about 24 then ..

Herbie “Go Fast” Rodgers

Inducted 2010

The late, great Herb Rodgers and his “Flyin’ Glass” moniker were two of the most familiar names in all of Canadian drag racing. The London, Ontario based racer first became active in the Alcohol Funny Car class in
1977 and since then ran a series of Ford-bodied alcohol Funny Cars. His claim to fame includes being the first class racer to ever run a “five” on Canadian soil, being chosen to represent his country Canada during NHRA’s
Dragfest in Fuji Japan in 1995, and a huge IHRA national event title at New York International Raceway in 1992.

Herb Rodgers’ driving career spanned 5 decades and his forty-year driving career will probably never be equaled.

Herb started campaigning drag race cars in 1964 along with his wife Elaine racing at local tracks in Ontario and Michigan. His first ride was in drag racing pioneer George Herbert’s D/Dragster in which he drove for one year before purchasing his own small block Chevy powered B/D. Herb raced the B/D for two years before stepping up to an injected nitro burning small block Chevy in a Logghe chassis built in Michigan.

In 1967 Herb put a blower on the little Chevy and appropriately named the car Mission Possible. Herb and Elaine
sold the car when they got the opportunity to team with “Hall ofFamer” Scott Wilson in a Ford Canada sponsored SOHC Ford dragster. Next up Herb then drove the MacGregor Auto Parts Top Fuel car for a season before
putting his driving career on hold to raise his family.

During his hiatus from Drag Racing and never one to sit idly around Herb decided to help his employer Pat Hodgson with his Super Modified Oval track car. The London Concrete Machinery Super Modified was a
force on the circuit with drivers Norm Mackereth, Harvey Lennox and Ron Peam. This time filled the gap from his true love of drag racing until 1977 when Herb, Elaine and the “Girls” Stacey and Jacki purchased their first of
many Alcohol Burning Funny Cars.

The first car was appropriately named “The Entertainer” as Herbie was always just that an entertainer. Famous for his long smoky burnouts Herb captivated the crowd and quickly became a fan favorite. Herb kept the Entertainer name on the car until he lost the Trans Am body launching it skyward after an explosion and “The Flying Glass” name seemed more appropriate and it stuck for next three decades.

Herb’s big break came with the marketing partnership with Big “V” Drugs and for the first time in Herb’s career he had financial backing to go to the next level. The 1992 season was a breakout year for the team as they won the IHRA Empire Nationals, plus running well in both IHRA and NHRA. Herb set the IHRA 1/8 mile per hour record in Huntsville, Alabama with a 187.42 pass. With the sale of Big “V” to Shopper’s Drug Mart the sponsorship deal wasn’t renewed but Herb and Elaine purchased a new Gordy’s Chassis with a Mustang body. Right out of the box the Mustang became the first Alcohol funny Car ever to run a 5 second pass on Canadian soil. Herbie continued to be a force in Alcohol Funny Car racing throughout the 90′s winning numerous match races, UDRA events and competing in IHRA and NHRA. Their successes were rewarded with a trip to Japan in 1995 to the NHRA/RCC International Drag Race where Herb represented Canada and finished runner-up in the all-star field.

Herb and Elaine continued to run the “Flying Glass” Mustang until the summer of 2002. Herb had battled Colon cancer and had developed a breathing disorder related to his working with asbestos which made it hard to breathe and he felt it no longer safe to drive a 3000 horsepower race car. The car was sold to Slave Lake Alberta’s Trevor Lebsack and Trevor still races the car competitively in IHRA Funny Car.

Throughout Herbie’s distinguished Drag Racing career he was always flanked by his close friend and crew chief Gordie Overbaugh and his loving wife Elaine known to all the racing family as “Toots”. Herbie was always
there to help up and coming young drivers and was a mentor and close friend to IHRA World Champion’s Todd Paton and Rob Atchison and NHRA World Champion Frank Hawley. Herbie was a legend who touched
the hearts of all who met him both on and off the track. His positive influence helped all those who were fortunate enough to meet Herb Rodgers. Herb Rodgers is a true Canadian Legend. His exceptional talent as a driver, car owner and builder are dwarfed by his great showmanship and compassion for drag racing. Few people will forget the legend and the accomplishments of this truly unique man without a big smile and story to share. His legend and his accomplishments live on through the many stories and tales told and retold time and time again acknowledging this truly remarkable Canadian racer.

thought I would edit this and put in the Obit..I am shamed I never even knew it was that long ago ..The first time I met Herb It was a Sunday morning about 7am when all the windows in our house were just rattling like a jet plane was gonna crash into the house, I jumped out bed and grabbed my daughter  and brought to back of the house the noise was still there an it seemed like the house was going to blow up I ran to front door to look out and here was this rail on my front lawn with this lady running around the stacks herb was in the seat just rattling her and she just was a bouncing, fire coming out all the stacks, the smell in the air was acrid,  what a site , I about lost a good Sunday morning erection, we hadn't lived there to long just a couple months so I think I may have seen the car on a trailor or in front of his garage but hadn't paid much attention..Till that Sunday morning biggrin That memory will always stick with me ..

Herb Rodgers
In Memoriam

Words and photos by Ian Tocher

I was deeply saddened when I learned that veteran Alcohol Funny Car competitor Herb Rodgers died the morning of Nov. 30 from complications related to surgery in his struggle against cancer and lung disease.

Rodgers_LaHaie.jpg
Herb Rodgers (left) shared a friendship that dated back to the 1960s with Dick LaHaie, current crew chief for NHRA Top Fuel champion Larry Dixon. Rodgers raced a Jr. Fuel dragster for years before settling into the Alky flopper class in 1977.

As a fellow Canadian I always made sure to check on Herb's progress at IHRA national events. No matter if he had a great outing and qualified in the top half of the field, or suffered a rare DNQ, I knew I could count on a friendly welcome in Herb's pit and he'd give me a straight answer about what happened. In an ever-more-competitive class, Herb consistently made the best use of what limited resources he had, and he was never a driver to be taken lightly -- especially at the starting line.

A drag racer since 1963, Herb switched full-time to the Alcohol Funny Car class in 1977, where he enjoyed considerable success in the American Hot Rod Association and United Drag Racers Association, winning several UDRA events along the way.

Rodgers_old_car.jpg
Canadian Herb Rodgers and his "Flyin' Glass" Firebird Alcohol Funny Car journeyed south to make a number of AHRA and UDRA shows from the late-1970s to mid-1980s (DRO file photo by Mark Bruederle).

His biggest win came in 1992, though, when he beat Doug Hearsum in the Alky Funny Car final at the Empire Nationals in Leicester, NY. That same year, Herb cracked the top-10 in IHRA points for the only time in his career, finishing seventh overall. Also of note is that Herb and his team were invited by NHRA in 1995 to represent Canada as part of an international drag racing exhibition at Fuji, Japan, and he is credited with being the first Alcohol Funny Car driver to break into the fives at a Canadian track.

Rodgers_profile.jpg
Herb Rodgers' most recent "Flyin' Glass" was a 1997 Mustang-bodied creation with sponsor support from Rockin' Rodeo in Fredericton, NB, as well as Castrol Canada, Tri-Metal, and Snap-On Tools.

Herb apparently last drove his racecar in June at St. Thomas Dragway, located near his London, Ontario home, where he made a couple of six-second passes at more than 200 mph. According to draglist.com, his career-best pass came in 2001 when he went 5.915 at 242.25 mph.

As is so often the case, it's hard to believe I won't get to speak with Herb again about his racing, his family, or just about how the hockey season might be shaping up. It's not often I find a similarly devout hockey fan in the deep south and with Herb no longer making the races, those trips to places like Rockingham, Darlington, Richmond, and Bradenton just aren't going to be the same.

Rodgers_going_away.jpg
Herb Rodgers is survived by his wife Elaine "Toots" Rodgers and daughters Jackie and Stacey. His funeral was held Dec. 3, in London, Ontario.

RIP HERB..

I knew I was too old for most on this forum when I posted about Art Malone.
Hey Chuck
What year are you talking about when Herb passed away? What happened to his flopper car?

Great posting, thanks, i see a lot of names there i recognize from years ago.

Always liked Gord Overbaugh's sweet 57 chev he ran, can't remember the class, it may have been c or d/gas? Or modified production. Remember the underside of his car was painted with some sort of pattern,, man that is a few decades ago now.

And Geo Herbert,, the D/D had a 302 jimmy if i remember correctly.

(Great story about waking up to the rattling windows!! Lol)

Thanks Chuck
I had just found the date of his passing as 2002. You mention Gordie Overbaugh. Yes he was just one of the many guys from the London areawho made growing up with cars in the 60's so much fun.
Maybe I will start a list. All these guys should be remembered.
Like I said, I am a little old for most guys on this forum.
