can you still use a donor car like a Ranger ( dash or frame ) VIN for a Model T

I registered a 1950 Ford into my name about 5 years ago...things may have changed however this is how it went.
I had an ownership but it was from 1972 and registered to someone other than the guy I got the truck from, the ownership was signed with no other info filled out...you know how that goes. Anyway, I happened to know the guy who the truck was registered to in '72 and I gave him a call as a heads up. I then went to a Service Ontario (Bowmanville) and attempted to simply change it over into my name. At this time you did not need an appraisal so this might affect doing this today. I gave the clerk the ownership and she tried to check the numbers in the computer...she tells me "This is a trailer", I tell her "No it is a truck". She proceeds to tell me that because the ownership is so old and the truck has been off the road for so long that there is no record of it existing and therefore I would need to pay for and sign a sworn affidavit -this would be $30 and then pay for the transfer. I am a little surprised at this but I think this is an opportunity I don't want to question much so I proceed. She pulls out the forms....and a bible...yup just like on TV...and I have to place my hand on it and repeat some words..my hand did not burst into flames or anything (which also surprised me). I jokingly questioned about what I would have to do if I was another religion which ignited a bit of a religious argument between the two people behind me that lasted until I was leaving the building.
Anyway, long boring story to say you might be able to go in with the VIN numbers and vehicle info, explain where you got it and that there is no longer an ownership nor a record of who owned it...if this is the case...and inquire about a signed affidavit. If it was sitting on some ones property maybe get them to write you a bill of sale with a note to the effect that the ownership is lost. This is all assuming that the vehicle is not, or was not stolen or acquired against the knowledge of whoever may have owned it if you know. This may have only been possible because I at least had an old ownership (which was a legit one for the truck in my case)...so if you had an old ownership for that vehicle...also, mine was so long off the books that there was no record, no sure how far back the records end in their files.

Don't think you can reg. a Model T as a "RANGER" & I hope you haven't finished the project without getting a ownership in your name??? Cause when you go to have it appraised for "transfer" your going to get BANGED big time on value TAX unless you can get it "low balled" then sit on reg. it for plates for awhile!! If you get it appr. for say $4000 & put it in as a "UNFIT" vehicle, then plate it, the next day or week with an Insur. value of $15000 the MOT will go TILT when they cross refference Ins. data!!! & they DO THIS!!! sometimes random checks as they share all Ins. INFO now!!! Best to sit on it for at least a mth as UNfit for a time line of "repairs' shall we say!!!

I do not know why everyone pushes the "Just buy an ownership" (not so much in this thread) deal when it costs next to nothing to do it legit. Most "historical documents" cost $300+ if they have your make/year and a "blank" one will cost $500.
Take your proof of sale documents, (if you do not have one, tell them that), if you bought it off kijiji tell them what you paid and that you did not get a receipt. They will then go by the MTO appraisal for taxes. That is why it is important to do it now. You will need an MTO appraisal for about $30.
They may ask for a letter stating what the car is from the manufacturer (you can try a dealership they will point you in the right direction) , you can do a sworn statement right at the MTO office if you cannot get a letter.
If you do not have a VIN, they will issue one, if you do not have an ownership, they will issue one "Un-fit" until the car is together and has a valid safety.
All in all it cost me about $50 to get a valid VIN and ownership without any "shady" issues involved.
The biggest thing I can suggest is go to your local MTO and ask them what they want to see, and the most important step is deal with the SAME person everytime you need to go back. Makes things much easier then trying to explain things over and over.
Other docs they may ask for:
Pictures of the car in its current state Receipts for any parts
Thats all.

basically what i did. i went to the mto and asked what they wanted, then went and got it. the previous owner was deceased and it had been up at a farm since 73. all i had was a bill of sales from the farmer to start with.

Reading the MTO stuff lead me to believe that no original VIN generates a MTO VIN but is for the current year............ which leads to 2013 emission standards...???
My project is a box full of fenders....... not spending another cent til I get the ownership thing cleared up.
I was hoping to place the body on a currently "Fit" vehicle frame so I can eliminate having to find a garage that will safety a 1929 "Ranchero" wink wink.

I asked her " wouldn't that be what a sales receipt was for??? ....Jesus I really hate people sometimes. lol
I'll try again on Tues. I have bill of sale, serial numbers off car, engine, ect. Lots of pictures ect. I'll go back with notorized letter and try again.
It will take a couple of visits, just remember to deal with the same person you talked to last time. It usually helps. Unless that person is totally clueless, then try your luck with another.
As for the no VIN, vehicles prior to 54 (I think) had no VIN, they usually used a body/frame or even the engine #. The newer MTO systems will not accept them, so they issue you a new 17 digit number, that you are supposed to stamp into the frame of the vehicle.
As for he emissions requirements, pretty sure if they give you a KIT designation you are exempt, I would have to re-research that as its been a few years since I did mine. To get around the KIT designation, you must have an "Original" part to that vehicle, then its "restored" and should be tagged as the year of the vehicle. (Hope that made sense).

The last one I did was a 39 Ford about 6yr ago.I found a # on the frame and took it in to be checked. It was not registered to anyone in Ont. Thankyou is all I said. I then went to my lawyer and got a sworn affidavit with that vin # on it etc I also had a bill of sale from the swap meet vender. I then took all this to the motor vehicle office and bingo, ownership in my hand. Two key words here-LAWYER-because they know how to write it up to impress and RESTORE -Because they will put you in some other classification -been there.done that and it was not nice. BTW, my bro did this a few yrs ago and it worked for him too.
