I was just wondering if anybody has had any experience with this type of paint and bondo removal. I was thinking about purchasing a unit from a company in Texas.
I saw it on an episode of My classic car and it looked like a good way of striping a body or chassis to bare metal
There is still dust and glass dust to boot. I have never been mr safety but this one scares the crap out of me . Glass dust in your underware cant be good so you dont want to breath it.
If this is the one I'm thinking of: This system uses a liquid mixed with the glass to curb the dust.
Watch the video more closely. It has been discussed on other forums and the consensus was that the car they showed did not have the original paint on it and they were only stripping of one or two layers off. No primer on that car.
I saw the info-mercial for this one too! It was a gold early 60s Chev 4 door right? That system used plain water to keep the dust down and there wasn't even much water on the ground afterwards either. Apparently the water combined with the blast medium uses such force that it pretty much vapourizes the water on contact.

Cool video, but I think it's been "doctored" a bit !! That Cadillac was painted just for this demonstration, because that's all that's on the car, Paint !! There's no primer under it. Still pretty cool process, but what they don't show is the guy having to refill the the blaster 50 times.
Thanks to all the members for their input. The cost of the unit that I am considering is $7995.00 and comes with everything needed except the compressor. They do have trailer mounted units with compressor and water tank for around 22 grand. I was planning on renting the compressor and mounting the unit in the back of my pickup along with a 150 gal water supply if I was going to go mobile with the unit.
Do you think there would be a need for this type of paint and rust removal among the car enthusiasts on this site and in southern Ontario in general.
Any feedback either good or bad would be appreciated
I would look into the types of permits you would need first.Just because it's dustless, doesn't mean it's environmentally friendly. Some of the older automotive paints contained lead, and you may have to be specially certified for this type of paint removal. My 5 cents !!
I dunno. $8000 doesn't sound too bad if you have it, but, if you're borrowing it, you are gonna get real tired of the payments if there's no money comin in. $1000 sounds good too, if you can do even 1 a day, but, if it's sittin there doin nuthin.......

I saw that on t v as well , looks like it does a decent job ,, I think a little pricey , but worth it if you plan on doin some side jobs to offset the price , says can do in your driveway , wont hurt chrome or glass , Im sure if price a lot lower we d all have 1
How bigs your truck? 150 US gal = 1252 Lbs big compressor and other equipment will likely be close to the same. Seeing your going mobile whats the plan for not ruining the dudes driveway In the upscale subdivision and his nabours going nuts . Dirty crap work normally contained to the industrial areas not something you can sneak in and out without anyone noticing . the permits and insurance will likely kill the deal .
At a thousand dollars this is a service I would pass on .Thats a lot of coin for something I can do myself. If you were asking if I would use your service I would have to say no.Posibl users would be big contracts,Construction companies, your town wors dept and the like.Really get a few contracts befor investing. Flatblack, I am just curious as to how much your time is worth and at what price would you consider to be fair to strip a complete car to bare metal. I was thinking more like 700.00 or 800.00 to do a car like a full size chev. I was pricing out other companies that do media blasting as well as dipping but they are all well over a thousand dollars and you have to bring it to them.
What I was meaning was this is a hobby for me I work on my car in the evenings and enjoy working on it .I have no intention of taking it or any other one down to bare metal so the sanding I need to do ,can be done by me in my own time.Maybe others who are more into the perfect job and have the money would welcome such a service.I think maybe a trip to a show or cruise night would be in order and ask if there is a need for this service .When starting or thinking of starting, a good business plan should be top priority. If this is to be fulltime what are your sources of income during those weeks when you have no customers.I am not trying to piss in your cornflakes but I have an appliance service business and I can tell you that there are some very lean times that you have to account for,and thats the stuff that will sneek up on you and cause the probems .Then there is also the fact that you will be dealing with the public and as you can tell from this small snippit of the population there are many different personalities out there .Go for it cause you will always wonder what could have been ,if you don't ,but go into it with your eyes wide open. Ed
I think there would be a real market with industrial equipment, and the automotive hobby industry might carry you through lean periods in the year if you had a facility if you positioned yourself correctly.
Out together a business plan and calculate your ROI and see of it is something you think you can make work.
I agree with you on that aspect 2inches, I don't think the automotive business would carry it alone. But I live in an area where there are several marinas and other businesses which I think could benefit from a mobile service such as this. I also plan on creating a business plan and talking to anyone I can at cruise nights and car shows to get their feedback as well.
I thank you also flatblack for your input as a business person and your feelings on going for it. I have always said that I don't want to be on my deathbed and look back on my life and say damn I wish I would have done that.
But more investigating and due dilligence are definately needed before I dive in.
On the way to the Thursday night cruise in Smiths Falls went past a place called Commercial Alternator had a large sign up by the road saying they are now doing dustless blasting, sounds like the same process as in the video.
