saw a gto with a new engine with carbs on it this weekend passed and all i could think was dave would not like this. the gentlemen said it was a new crate engine from gm with msd ignition. he said depending what chip he put in he could get awesome mileage or performance. chris58 spent a hour talking to him to get the lowdown on it.
Q:The owner of a 2005 Chevrolet vehicle installed a 2011 crate motor. (The 2011 crate motor was not designed or equipped with any emission components). What are the emission requirements?
A: This vehicle must:
meet the visible emission standards
meet the emission standards set for the original motor (2005).
have all emissions control equipment normally included with the replacement motor (2011), or its equivalent, attached and functioning. Since the crate motor did not come with any emission components, none are required.
meet or exceed the 2005 standards for that original motor if a provincial officer asks for a Drive Clean test. Although emissions control equipment is not required, without it, the car would likely fail the Drive Clean test.
no matter what year your car is it is still required to meet 1980 emission standards if moe officer makes you take a drive clean test.
the open air cleaner and vented valve cover will still bring fines
this is the moes cop out, no matter what you have in your car you had better hope it has a chance of passing a drive clean test or its off the road. I wonder how loose the standards are for 1980?

actually in Ontario, as long as it fallsunder hot rod status, which i will have to assume a GTO with an LS in it does, there are no emmisions requirments. If he has any documentation, real or otherwise lol, that shows it had any motor installed pre 1999 that would have made it a "hotrod" then he is good to go.
it doesnt matter, if the motor is not original, which it is not, this car can be sent for an emmision test if requested by the moe and if it fails its off the road. every scenario on the ministry page ends with the moe being able to send it for an e test. i think even my 39 chev truck that i have put a 51 bucik straight 8 in falls under that rule.
MOE said last fall that if run a crate engine and carry the receipt for said crate engine with you then they will let it go. This has been discussed in the other threads at great lengths already.
What was going on in Peterborough last weekend .Some kind of MTO,MOE,local police blitz.Heard on the radio about it and the report said many cars were sent for Etests by the MOE as a result of inspections for equipment violations. The report I heard did not give spacifics on weather they were cars or trucks or and particular years of vehicles that were stopped or ticketed.Anyone from that area have any info on what it was all about? i agree, but it must be a visual poluter to have reason to request an e-test on an exempt vehicle. Under thehood visuals are not going to warrant an e-test if the car isnt smoking and looking like a complete pail. Unless its got a monster cam with tons of overlap a decent running LS is going to pass 1980 emmisions requirments anyways. I dealt with this a month ago with my 383 S10 (the one i was trying to trade for a 4dr buick on bags lol...hmmm) and after showing a receipt from billy bobs garage that showed m having a small block installed in the truck in 1997 along with an email from some big wig at drive clean stating that i was indeed right and required NO emmisions equipemnet they instead hassled me about the volume of my 3" exhaust and 2 chambers lol. They were decent and let me off with a warning.
oh ur the guy with the s truck, sorry ive been tied up at work as i am at work right now working on a machine. i do agree there should be no reason for the moe guy to make you take an e test but they can do it as prick job if they cant find anything else wrong im sure. if you are still game for a trade i will come see your truck as soon as i get my shop move done.

lol, no worries man, i actually flipped the truck for an 89 vert Vette knowing i could move the Vette pretty quick, sold it in 5 days and made out pretty good cash wise. Now im driving a 70 Mercury that will get bags in the spring.
