Got stopped for running a red lite a coupla weeks ago with my 3/4 ton p/u, towing my trailer with my skid steer on board. So today, this notice comes in the mail, that says I MUST go to the MTO office for a vision, and knowledge test, AND a road test with a class 'D' vehicle, if I want to keep my 'D' licence. Apparently this happens if you're over 65, and lose more than 2 points. What a farce.

I dropped my A/Z to a D/z when I retired, then they wanted me to "re-do" the Z endorsement, so I dropped that too!! Last mth. I get notified they are "restricting me "AGAIN" & adding a "W" to my lic. that stops me from driving a commercial vehicle in the USA?? Ask me if give a "RATS A$$??? as I have no intention of doing that!!! It's possible that you may have "too many" points lost on lic. & that's why they want a re-test??Road test with class "D" vehicle?? Is your 3/4 ton not lic. enough to pull your skid steer, or they want re-test done with "proper" class D truck??? Never heard of this, being 65 & lose more than 2 points causing a "road test??? Pete

That is the first ticket I've gotten in over 5 years.
The first sentence says: Due to an accumulation of more than 2 demerit points on your driving record, you are required to pass a driver's examination consisting of:
Vision
Knowledge D
Road test in a class D vehicle
then it goes on to tell me that if I fail a test, or decide not to take test, my commercial driver's licence will be downgraded to a class 'G', or in my case a 'GM', cuz I have a motorcycle licence.

So after only 2 weeks, you've been convicted of running a red light??? Did you get a court date or just pay the ticket?
Always get a court date even if you are guilty. There's always a chance it will get lost in the shuffle or the cop might not show up or whatever. At the very least, it will extend your conviction time to down the road about a year. For something like that, I would have sent it directly to xcopper once I get a court date in the mail. They work wonders those guys.

i had all this happen to me also but differently. i had a A/Z-M then i had a brain aneurysm about 3 yrs ago, age 60 and had just finished my mandatory re-writes. about 5-6 months after the operation i got a letter demoting me to, get this, G-Z-M and added the W. if i stayed seizure free for 2 years i am eligible to be re-instated back to a D-Z not A-Z. i started driving long haul before the A-Z and bikes M i was grandfathered into also. last time with the brain doc i asked him about the re-instatement and he asked if i really needed it due to all the re-testing and hoops to jump through. now i spend time looking for a part-time job that requires a G-Z. LOL
i just recently heard about keeping your D-Z after age 65 without complete testing and A-Z is coming also but there are some restrictions with it and pete found one of them. there is a huge shortage of truck drivers and they hope this takes some pressure off. get use to the turbans and beards delivering at your back door. it just happened to me at the warehouse and i made him stay outside without a beard net. jeez i have to wear one in my own place when i let it grow for awhile. its the meat business for crying out loud.
i would fight it pete if you need the D. either in person with the crown or the x-copper thing. if it turned as you entered and the cop was over zealous you might have a crack at it. good luck bud.
but if you have a need for a G-Z driver i'm the go to guy. oh yea, i have had to back a lot of trailers into my dock in the last few years. seems i need a much bigger wedge shaped dock plate.

I have a crew cab duelly if I tow over 10000 lbs I was told that I have to have a "A R" licence what is this all about. If I tow my 5 th wheel camper that weighs 14,000 lbs all I need is a "G" licence any ideas?

I had that same problem before I got my A. I had a duelly with a 5th float carrying a bobcat and a sod roller. I was 800 lbs over and had to unload the bobcat and come back for it later. I was ticketed. They really pick on the dullies.
That's one heavy camper you have. I think you should double check on what you are thinking there because I think you would need an A. Not sure what the R is. Is that a restriction?

For that, he needs the same license as the 80 year old guys, driving a 40ft Motorhome, towing a Cadillac Escalade...."G" license

No, I just paid the man. I figure that he had me dead to right. Have gotten away with a lot of stuff that I should have been wrote up for, so I figure, that this is still cheap. I am going to go for the required stuff, cuz I still need my 'D' as we have a dump truck - 33000# gross

On the topic of license requirement my friends in Alberta need an air brake certificate to drive there class A motor home. Is this the case in ON? I have a DM having dropped my BM years ago, not going to drive a school bus so not bothered to take the tests anymore. I tow the 8,000# 5th wheel with a 2500HD which is licensed at just under the weight for yearly inspections, but the license fee is about 110$ a year.

You all realize that the 'Z' endorsment is a joke. If you have juice brakes (hydraulic), and your brakes give out, you're goin for a ride. With air brakes, if something lets go, you lose air pressure, and the brakes come on. What a farse. You need to know the different types of air brakes, how they work, how to adjust them etc., but you can't touch them. Give me a break already.

the "A-R" designation means without air endorsement. its called a restricted A. thats what i am going after now since they took my A-Z due to my dually and goose neck flat bed. i don't care about the M they put on it. and its not just duellies either. a f-350 single axle pulling the weight needs it also. so far they have been shy on chasing the leisure world, campers, etc, due to the huge feed back expected. but, i had a MTO audit awhile back at the shop and i asked about this and the reply was they were working on a soft entrance into the situation. i can remember when i was on the highway seeing cars and small trucks pulling camper trailers that were way to big for the tow vehicle. lots of time's later they were found on their roofs with the contents all over the road. welcome to northern ontario in the holiday season. the trailer steering the tow vehicle.

You all realize that the 'Z' endorsment is a joke.
Not a joke at all!
Air brake users need to know how to hook-up, inspect, maintain and troubleshoot the system. If we put drivers in airbrake vehicles without knowlege of the system, there death mayhem out there. You don't need to be able to adjust them. If they are out of adjustment, you need to know that the vehicle is not going on the road. You need to know how to hook up the lines, how to test if the compressor is working properly, how to test if the tractor protection valve is working, how to keep moisture out of the system and a lot more.

Depends on the age of vehicle,,the coat hangar holding my compressor tight broke and when I applied the brakes the air gauge dropped from 90 to 0,, no warning buzzers, not maxi brake equipped,,just a spring brake on the drive shaft that only worked on level ground when stopped,,damn near 7 miles to get it stopped with a full load of slurry...ah the good old days..

With the truck I'm driving now, I don't check to see if they need adjustment anymore. Not even the DOT/MTO doing a roadside/scale house inspection can check them to see if they need adjustment.

hahahahaahaahhhohohohohohohhahahahahah Death and Meyham hahahahahhohohohoohohohohohohoh Stop...your killen me.....
Have you seen whats driving trucks out there lately? If these "individuals from a foreign country that carry their bed linen in a hat like manor"
can get a "Z" endorsment.....any Monkey can!
Do you know they print the drivers test in 27 languages other than English? But all the road signs in Canada are in English or French ONLY?
Whats up with that?
I was a signing authority with the ministry years ago...able to upgrade licences from "G-D-A"
They teach these people like lab rats....just enough to get from A to B....nothing else. They can pass a test...but couldnt answer 1 question about the system thats not on the test.......
I see these guys every day coming in for jobs! You should see their CVOR! Pagesand Pages of infractions and failure to check or inspect!
Thank Gawd for the Air Brake endorsement test? hahahahahaahhohohhohohohohhohahahahahahahhohohohohohohoh best joke of the day!

Yes you need the air brake endorsement.
no you don't. if the vehicle doesn't have air you don't need it. you will need the restricted A only.

What you learned years ago has nothing to do with today. Do you have an AZ or have you ever driven an air equipped vehicle? By the sounds of your post, you haven't got a clue of what's required today. Take a test today and see how fast you flunk.
Listen to a current AZ driver, not someone from the olden days. We're not driving horses out there.
This is why people jump on your posts......you spout off....HALF ****ED!.....without knowledge.
Yes...I have a current ABMZ.....Do you know what that means?
I started with a chauffers license and grandfathered when the change came in the 80's
In 1984 took the Commercial Driver Trainer program from the OSL (4 week course) which allowed me to upgrade drivers license from G to D or A
In 1992 I upgraded to Air Brake Trainer and was one of the first in Canada to have a mobile training board with a complete Air Brake system.
In 1993 I went to Michigan for skid school training for commecial trucks. Also in 93 I took a course for accident investigation and reconstruction
for commercial vehicals that is recognised by the Court system of Ontario and Insurance companies
By 1994 I have a video training library of over 500 training tapes of every commercial vehical available
By 1998 I had over 500 AZ -DZ drivers working for me in North America I was one of the largest suppliers of commercial Drivers,
supplying some of the top fleets in Canada.
In 2000 I conducted the largest single hiring of AZ divers in Canada 107 drivers in one month fo a private fleet....I interviewed, screened and road
tested every one......196 failed....1 in 3 passed my screening
I have several different MTO AZ driver tests from the 90's and a few from 2009......guess what....80% of the test from the 90's is the same as
today.
I think I have a little knowledge.....
What I see driving on the road today scares the crap out of me......Seniors that can barely drive a car can jump in a 45 ft motorhome and careen
down to Florida......people that can't speak a lick of english are driving 75ft trucks down the road....clueless....trained like monkeys just enough to
pass a drivers test....... 140,000 lbs trucks that havent been circle checked or have had recent mechanical brake checks......drivers driving sleep
deprived wandering down the road......loads improperly straped or chained.....Drivers that can't back up.....
I see drivers come in to apply for jobs that have a CVOR's that are 4-5-6 pages long with infractions.....regular abstracts that have 8 - 9 - 10 points
bad attitudes.....poor health....I have seen it all
And you are concerned about air brakes?......You.....kittycat....have NO KNOWLEDGE!
There is a lot more to be concerned about than a system that has redundant backups and if they fail....they still work (unless they are out of
adjustment) 90% of the drivers could not tell you HOW to adjust the brakes or to what standard or with what wrench.
Anyone could pick up an MTO air brake manual and with15-20 minutes of reading could pass the test.....but still not know crap about airbrakes
Just sayin......

Hey know-it-all. This is why people laugh at this post. Do you advocate doing away with the Z endorsement if according to you it's worthless?
Well...kittycat....you must have dyslexia.....bad eyesite.... oldtimers....or just cant read. At no time did I say the Z was worthless or to do away with it. What I said was...They train new drivers like monkey's....exactly whats on the test and nothing more. Period. If you take someone from a school and ask them practical information outside of the test...they would be lost
Like I said, anyone wanting accurate info, talk to a current AZ driver. Not some grumpy know-it-all.
Would you be refering to yourself?....just askin
Hey fatmouth, you and mister gods gift to the MTO ,,, bite me.
Bite me.....really....thats the best you can do?
At no time did I say I was Gods gift to MTO or that I know it all....What I said was.....I have a little knowledge..........(maybe a little more than a current driver)
Sit down before you hurt yourself

apart from your half page listing of boasting points, your profound revelation that anyone can get a Z endorsement and your accusation that I kow F-all,,,, no you're not claiming to be a know-it-all.
You're full of your so called knowledge. I'm schooled in AZ driving and I came out of there with a wealth of knowledge. I currently drive a six axle walking floor rig and you claim I know f@ck -all? Who the hell do you think you are. What do you drive? A pick-up with juice brakes. I think your ego is about as big as your lifetime list of accomplishments. I don't need you insulting me. Buy the way, you left out your birth weight on your gloat sheet.

I don't recall any debates between Fatstax and I . I don't have any issues with him other than he takes me way too seriously. It's just a friggin' chat room for crap sakes. Maybe you Cobourg Boys should come over next time I have a wing night, and you'll realize that I don't bite.
