Back in july/2005 the european union enacted a ban on new vehicles and after market wheels from using lead wheel weights.
In the USA it is estimated that about 65,000 TONS of lead weights are used and approx. 2000 tons are lost due to falling off, etc allowing this lead to enter the enviroment.
So far these states have banned the use of lead weights:
California, Maine, Minnesota, Oregon, Vermont, Washington, Iowa, Wisconsin, New York, Rhode Island, Illinois, and Maryland.
(Didn't know that wheel weights are mostly recycled lead from automotive batteries.)
I guess all these environmentalists aren't going to be happy until we go back to the horse and buggy but only after they plug up the horses butt and find a way for them to stop using oxygen.

I "heard" they are banning valve stem caps If they fall off, a child might put the in their mouth.....

Id like to find out were these do good, ers think ,lead comes from , How many of these states band lead tipped bullets. Many more deaths by lead poisoning with bullets then tire weights.
Yes, those you could make out of lead because they can't get out into the environment thus saving the battery recycling industry and appeasing the roadside ditch soil huggers.
I don't think panic so much as a,"not again"type of reaction. Its not happening here and really not worth even thinking about but it is just one more -possible- shot(pun intended)at the automotive industry.Sometimes a percived change, even if it is a good one, to an industry and hobby already under a microscope brings this,"not again",type of reaction. Ed
I did not post that to panick anyone.
I could care less if they banned lead wheel weights, cause there are alternatives already in use by the new car industry.
Also found out that not only steel and zinc weights are available, but some form of composite weights, AND they are being manufactured in CANADA.
I needed a good battery for the old GMC motorhome and stopped in a battery shop in Duncan, here on the Island. I asked the lad if they bought old batteries. He said they pay $5 each. And if I buy a new battery, they will give me $10 each. I went to a friends place and found 8 old batteries. I got $80 trade in on a $129 battery.
Lead will be around for a long time.
all the old lead weights falling off wheels end up in Mike Duffy's pants
that's where the saying by politicians came from, "get the lead out".....??

So if this comes to Canada does that mean old batteries will no longer have value as scrap. Ed
I know a company in Brampton that will still buy those old batteries. They ship them overseas to be recycled.
Are you talking about Tonnoli in Mississauga?? I don't know about them being shipped overseas, but I do know that Tonnoli separates everything and the lead is cleaned and poured into molds. The new ignots are 99.999% PURE lead and they are shipped to Holland Oh, Aslip Il, and a few other places to be used in the making of new batteries. Tonnoli also buys a lot of scrap batteries from the states to be recycled.
