Just wondering what the masses think out there. I will be moving with Ontario Power Generation (OPG) due to the phasing out of coal fired generation in 2014 and the closing of my beloved Lambton generating station. I have been with OPG for over 25 years and am looking forward to a new adventure with my family. I am not new to the "move" but my family is. I am trying to make it as easy as possible for them.
So here are the criteria, no more than $450,000.00 on house and property purchase, must be a decent sized community with all the amenities for the daughters and my wife. My daughters are competitive dancers and need a good dance company to survive (they currently compete across Southern Ontario, Michigan and Ohio - they live and breath it as I do Hot Rodding). My wife is a hairstylist so that should be an easy fit almost anywhere. We love the water/beach but that is an easy fit as almost all OPG sites mentioned are on water bodies. Love being close to border crossings but could survive without it. Education is a big factor with good EQAO values and possibly close to Universities would be a bonus. Plus, don't forget the rodding, I have to have something.
Of course we have sat as a family and made our best decisions and attempts at a list but I would be interested to see what this community has for suggestions. Thanks, Rhys.
North Bay:
No congestion, tons of lakes, clean water, clean air, reasonable real estate prices, reasonable prop taxes, cheaper insurance, both a good college and university, huge new medical center/hospital.
(Oh, and a new dragstrip just opened this spring.) Lol
I'm not going to vote, but only because there was no box for 'none of the above' - none of the choices are close enough to the ELTA shop(South Western Ontario's happenin' hub centre for all the automotive things going on around this area).

I have lived in Clarington all my life...5th generation. I like it here and everything you mention can be found here. The taxes are not cheap but better than communities to the west closer to TO. Everything is a stones throw away (other than the border) and there are lots of things to do.
Personally I,m aiming for the kissimee area of florida . But If I end up staying in Ontario , its going to be some where,s outta the snow belt , like st.catherines area , like that close to border . Shipping , border b s an exaggerated prices up here . I,m going south either on this side or that side of the border ..77.

i would check out the weather history for the regions. where i live in cobourg probably has the best weather bar none in ontario. something to do with lake effect. plus we have a beach and live fairly close to the big smoke but not in it and located on the 401 corridor for quick exit or transit. when i first started working in trenton 15 years ago i asked why the military put the airport there and i was told because of the weather. sure the banana belt (niagara region) might get a wee bit hotter in the summer but because of lake effect we get less snow, storms you name it. peterborough, 40 miles north of us is in the snow belt other side of the lake south of us, same. i think i used the snow blower twice last year. TO got a major soaking recently, we got nothing. i'm not kidding about the micro-bubble for weather.

Look me up if you want the 10 cent tour..

If I'd be given the opportunity, I'd be all over Kingston, there's just about everything within an hour and a half drive in any direction.
Tons of car guys, beautiful lakes, universities...and real estate is not astronomical like South Western Ontario.

Florida is running out of fresh water, real fast. They have to make it.
Then there's the limestone under Florida which is dissolving causing sink holes.
North Carolina has some nice places and real estate is reasonable.

Sounds good Chris. We will be touring the area this weekend or next, I might just take you up on your offer. I should have started this earlier, many of my coworkers are watching this thread to see the outcome. Thanks, Rhys.

the limestone has been there for ever an will be long after I,m gone .
the woman has some family there and I,m getting outta the snow ..77.

I was thinking the same. A bit bigger, has the amenities (the dance school) decent EQAO ratings for the schools. I was told Gravenhurst (and Probably Bracebridge) are great in the off season but are a struggle in the summer or holiday months with all of the vacationers, long waits in the grocery store, etc..... Funny thing, when I started with Ontario Hydro I was always told that the Gravenhurst work centre was the dream spot to be located. I will hopefully be touring through this area this weekend or next, Rhys.

You want reasonable real estate?? Move to Detroit, MI

We moved to Woodlawn in 94 which is just south east of Arnprior. Then Ottawa took us over so now we are run by the city:(. There are quite a few car events in the eastern On area and 2 universities as well. Our daughter was in competitive dance here(Kanata) with the Gailettes, don't know there name now. Lots of water areas to live in. Don't know how well your rod shop would do here. Snow in the winter but not that bad. Here is a house/ shop for sale just up the road from me.

That is a great piece of property but a bit out of my price range. I would love a layout like that.
Kanata would be a great location. I was asked to take a temporary rotation at Barrett Chute recently but I declined (the only reason being that they needed someone ASAP and it would run until December leaving my wife to sell the house and organize the move on her own). This was initially one of my first picks, Barrett Chute, Stewartville or Renfrew but on the map it seems to be a good distance from a bigger community like Kanata. I drive approximately 30 minutes to work now and I was hoping to reduce the commute on my next move. It looks like it would be an hour or better drive from Kanata to Arnprior and a further 30 minutes to the Chute. Kanata has a very highly rated school, Katimavik and hold on to your socks, Arnprior the highest rated school in Ontario, John XXIII. Man if Kanata was only closer to Arnprior I would be down in a heart beat.
Just to clarify, I don't have a rod shop. My wife had that image made up at a local sign shop as a bit of a sarcastic joke. I open the garage doors at my place and light of the welder and all of a sudden there is a line up at the door with needy people. You guys now the routine. Out of an eight hour day working on my project, two hours for me and six on other peoples cars, bikes, trucks, etc...... She mentioned that I work on so many other cars other than my own I might as well open up a shop.
Keep the votes and comments coming, I appreciate the advice, Rhys.

I'm with you Steve.......lol......we're very lucky to live where we are for the hot rod and drag racing action through out the year.

Keep heading North to Huntsville. Been living and working up here for 9 yrs after leaving Burlington/Oakville. Would NEVER go back.
Gravenhurst is dead (other than the wharf which is total tourist).
Bracebridge is ok but also very seasonal as it is surrounded by the three big $$ lakes.
Huntsville is the most year-round community, great community center, skiing at hidden valley, chain of lakes, close to Algonquin park, Dance studio and cruise night Weds AND Saturday nights!! Regarding the tourists, yep they come (for a reason!) but you learn when to shop. Never Fridayor Saturday if you want steaks and avoid town if its raining because they all leave the lakes.
I'll be around this weekend if you want to stop by.
Where would I live in Ontario?? That's easy !! I would get a map and a compass, and draw a 100mile radius around Toronto. Anyplace outside of the circle would be a great place to live.
Hi. I just read your post and if you are really serious, you DID, just describe Brantford, Ontario. We are a reasonable size city, 100,000 plus or minus, we have a university and a number of community style colleges, we are 1 hour from almost any place you would really like to be, we have very, very affordable housing, a good street rodding type of environment with supporting clubs and cruise nights within close proximity to the city. We also have a number of dance schools for your children as well as the Sanderson Centre where many of the competitions are held. I would be of the opinion that if you research all of the Cities mentioned you shouldn't have any problems making your choice for your family. Doug.

I second that.
Although I recently moved from Brant County to Waterford, Brantford is still where I do most of my shopping, doctors and such. Its an hour from Niagara (and the border), London, Toronto etc. Not sure whats happening at Nanticoke now. Real estate is really reasonable in the city or the county. A buddy's (and OR member) daughter is chin-deep into competitive dance too.
Hot rod scene is alive and well and home to one of the oldest and most respected car clubs in the country (Brantford Piston Pushers).

Hell, I would stay in Niagara, lots of benefits to being a border hopper. lots of cars and always something to do . mild winters and balmy weather between the lakes. 1/2 hour to Buffalo airport, 1 hour to Toronto............Enough cruise nights and car shows within an hour to satisfy anybody. Not to mention Buffalo Chicken wings and pizza from "Mister B's" in NF NY. a full tray and 25 wings with a pitcher of beer for under $25.............can't do that too many places anymore.
if this means anything to ya i have heard this more than once. you pretty much have to live as far north as north bay to get out of the air pollution coming out of the states. i'm to old now and the kids are grown but if i had the opportunity presented that you have i would have to think about it. with the 4 lane pretty much done and the airport you can be down here pretty quick. and for a bonus they have a race track and lake nippising has some some great beach's and fishing.
just thinking out loud
I would say anywhere along the St Lawrence River from Kingston to Cornwall, the closer to Cornwall the cheaper the real estate gets. For your budget you can buy almost any property you like other then right on the river. Three border crossing along this stretch( the one I use is 10 minutes away), strong old car presence, universites in Kingston and Ottawa, colleges in Kingston, Brockville, Cornwall. All the must have items for your wife and daughters are here. Many of the people who live here now where from Ottawa and the TO area before, much slower pace, cheap taxes, good hospitals.
That is a decision I made a few years ago and I like the triangle from Trenton to Stirling to Belleville. Real estate is reasonable , the countryside is beautiful and like Sacotu said we get a fraction of the snow they get from Kingston East. We also miss most of the wild Thunderstorms that seem to go to the North or South of us. Its 50 minutes to Kingston and 1 hour 15 to the border and 1 hour to Whitby the other way. There is a fair bit of car stuff happening around here or within a half hour's cruise. There are lots of places to go in this area and enough roads that you can go for a nice cruise in the country and take a different way going and coming. PE County is near as is Sandbanks park and Presquile along with the wine and cheese industries. all in all a great place to live.
"I" would move to Lake Huron Grand Bend or Bayfield or Goderich or Clinton
450,000 would buy you a Estate
50 miles north of London
72 Miles from USA
Small town living
Drag strip in the Bend Perfect weather Snowmobiling Water sports and on and on
whoops I already moved there in 1967
I agree... that would be my move.
I'm from Sudbury, and if it wasn't for work and family, we would move away from here. Roads are TERRIBLE, local government is corrupt and always in fight mode with eachother, entertainment is nearly non-existant. However it is good if you enjoy the outdoors, fishing, snowmobiling , etc. We enjoy this stuff but the winters are way too long and I'm getting fed up with our crumbling infrastructure.
I wish we were close to a 1/4 mile dragstrip too . LOL
Thanks for the participation everyone. As an update, many of my coworkers will find out where they are going by the end of next week. Whereas I am still in a holding pattern with a best guess of October for selection and December for a decision. I am still checking in on this poll often. My mind flip flops on desired location (and at that, what I may or may not be offered) from day to day as this drags on and it is taking its toll with my family (the only solace is knowing that I have a great job and company to continue with) . It is nice to see that wherever we may end up there are some great people nearby. Thanks again, Rhys.
Northern ratrodder,,, Not sure what you are missing, but you would never know anything was wrong in Sudbury, relating to the cars from there, by the huge number of drag cars there!!
They all are running here at the new dragstrip. (1 Hour away.)
I have no confirmed location, only a selection sheet soon to come out with locations that I must rank from 1 to 32. With being high senior I should have one of my top picks but you never know. Coal closure is running parallel to the "JRPT" process which is the centre led business transformation that you have probably heard about at work Radcop. I will pick from a couple of remaining Thermal sites (Lennox, Atikokan or Thunder Bay), Hydraulic sites (this side of the house is all new to me - North West Plant Group, North East Plant Group, Central Plant Group, Niagra Plant Group or the Ottawa/St. Lawrence Plant Group) or the Nuclear sites (Pickering, Darlington or Waste Management in Tiverton). I am familiar with the Nuclear side (small amount) as I have been involved with computerized/orbital welding procedures and Turbine overhaul work at those stations. I don't know how I would make out at a Nuclear station as I am used to having free reign or a very loooooooooong leash where I am now. The area that you mentioned, Kawarthas/Peterborough would be Darlington or Central Plant Group (Campbellford) as far as a station or Work Centre as they are called in Hydro Thermal Operations. I have lived in Peterborough and love it there, we also have friends in Keen so that is one of our top picks. Rhys.

I am actually 5 minutes away from keene. I work in radiation protection in darlington and sometime pickering nuclear. Would be nice to finally have a gearhead i can BS with at wotk.

You're right, there is a big car scene , but that can be found in many parts of Ontario.
The downside, as mentioned, is the terrible condition of our roadways , which are literally crumbling apart, we have a local government with it's own agenda ( ie read up on slush funds in sudbury, ticket scandals, closed door meetings ) , and we have the highest property taxes per services in the province. It is great that Bonfield is now open for business .... however if you lived in South Western Ontario, for a drag racer or drag race enthusiast, you would have access to 3 quarter mile dragstrips within a 2 hour radius. I'm also not a fan of the long drawn out winters .... when the snow falls in October and doesn't leave until May ... it sucks. Hahaha

This is why the ELTA shop is the centre of the Universe! ....in our eyes anyways, I guess, but I wouldn't want to live anywhere else in Onterrible! Too far away from the fun!

Well the official word came in on Friday, August 1, 2014. Almost one year from posting this thread. I will be relocating to Niagara Falls. I am very excited to begin the process and get on with some normalcy to life. So, what part of the Niagara region to settle in? Exciting times, Rhys.
Welcome to Niagara Falls. Good luck on the housing hunt. The cheapest housing area is Fort Erie Ridgeway with lots of land for a reasonable price. Welland is not too bad also. We have been promised, by Winnie the shrew, a new hospital in the Falls but that was before she won a majority. I lived in Ridgeway for 15 years and enjoyed the area . Winters were not that bad there but closer to the border could be a challenge. At times Fort would get a foot or more of snow and we would get a couple of inches. Last winter was the worst in 20 years down here and unusually cold and snowey. I am in the Falls now and access to the U.S. is available on 4 bridges depending on your destination. Then there is the lower prices on gas and groceries in the U.S. and an abundance of good eating places and reasonable prices. Enjoy your move and good luck on the house hunt.

I am so glad I get to keep that access with my move and I can keep on wearing and tearing the Nexus card. I am over to Port Huron, Michigan once or twice a week and I would really miss the border crossing. Moving is both exciting and intimidating. My house is ready to go here so the hunt is on. Anybody have suggestions on a good real estate agent?

When we sold our house we used Barbara Scarlett at the Century 21 office in Fort Erie. In Niagara falls we used Dennie Fischman at RE Max in Niagara Falls when we sold my dads house. She was very good and sold dads house in a week. They are the only agents I have delt with but they seemed to treat us right and were professional. Hope this helps you. I,m sure there are more agents out there who are good and reliable but I,have experience with them and have no complaints.
