well its not flat black, doesn't sound like it has traffic signs/license plates for floors and no blue jeans for door panels.  as well the rims must be painted orange or red.  some fake bs made up company name on the doors would also score some poseur points as well, faded by sanding them off a bit of course.

I would have to imagine the definition of a rat rod is what you make it, if you built it with your own touch and didn't jump on or become the band wagon then its whatever you want it to be.  heres the wiki definition of a rat rod

A rat rod is a style of hot rod or custom car that, in most cases, imitates (or exaggerates) the early hot rods of the 1940s, 1950s, and early-1960s. The style is not to be confused with the somewhat closely related "traditional" hot rod, which is an accurate re-creation or period-correct restoration of a hot rod from the same era.

Most rat rods appear "unfinished", regardless of their status, as only the vehicle's bare essentials are driven.

Definition[edit]

Originally a counter-reaction to the high-priced "customs" and typical hot rods, many of which were seldom driven and served only a decorative purpose. The rat rod's inception signified a throwback to the hot rods of the earlier days of hot-rod culture—built according to the owner's abilities and with the intention of being driven. Rat rods are meant to loosely imitate, in both form and function, the "traditional" hot rods of the era. Biker, greaser, rockabilly, psychobilly, and punk sub-cultures are often cited as influences that shaped rat rodding.

The typical rat rod is a late-1920s through to late-1950s coupe or roadster, but sometimes a truck or sedan. Many early (pre-World War II) vehicles were not built with fenders, hoods, running boards, and bumpers. The bodies are frequently channeled over the frame and sectioned, or the roofs are chopped, for a lower profile. Later-era post-war vehicles were rarely constructed without fenders and were often customized in the fashion of Kustoms, leadsleds, and lowriders; Maltese crosses, skulls, and other accessories were often added. The owner of the vehicle was typically responsible for most, or all, of the work present in the vehicle.

Recently, the term "rat rod" has been used to describe almost any vehicle that appears unfinished or is built simply to be driven.[citation needed] Chopped tops, shaved trim, grills, tail lights, and other miscellaneous body parts continue to be swapped between makes and models

im guessing if your ride fits some of these terms then its a rat rod.

I wouldn`t waste your time reading cookie cutter definitions from the net.
Take all comments and descriptions as a complement and we will all live alot longer and happier. Most people that drive classic cars and the rest who don`t, all appear to have differing views of what a rat rod is or isn`t (Flat black does not make it a rat rod!!!).
If your asking me, like my truck.....your driving a resto-mod.
Semi modern underneath, reliable, all the windows are there (and they work), no stupid sh!t welded/glued to it and it looks period on the outside.

Just add a few shirts, a visor and a swamp cooler and your getting closer to perfection!

I don't recall a crowned authority on rat rodding being named, who were these rat rodders you speak of?  by what wisdom and authority did they identify themselves with?  Im assuming one of these people are ed white?  he invented rat rodding as we know.  I personally have never built anything to impress others, if you are doing that go start a reality show with chip foose.  if you successfully took a mess of stuff and made a truck out of it you are way ahead of most people who buy their rat rod kits in spray cans, that's rat rodding to me, or rodding in its purest form.

Since when did the term "Rat Rod" become some sort of status symbol?

In my mind, they are all just hot rods.

hot rod also hot-rod (htrd)
n. Slang
An automobile that has been rebuilt or modified to increase its speed and acceleration.

rat rod
A car that's made out of scrap parts from multiple cars; no paint, rusty parts; looks like a junky hot rod

Not a Rat Rod to me either but a very historic truck all the same!
If the 1300 badges on the hood sides are original it means the truck is Canadian. Cool!

I'd call it a Hot Rod too.

Hot rod . But the only thing I would change is the tail lights are to close together and I like how the running boards kinda blend in the difference tween the cab and box . But even with out these changes , if it were mine , I,d call it a hot rod truck an drive the friggin wheels offa it grinning all the way , not worrying about what any one says ..77.

You only win half the prize !! You are correct that it's the plate, but the location is not the issue.

Not all the time.  I have "blue" vet plates on my truck, the sticker is on the front.  Any of the vanity plates on trucks will have the sticker on the front.  Well at least thats what the MTO folks told me.
