Suggestions about how this works?

I think water goes in and the air flow vaporizes it to a mist that flows into the cab.

But by the name maybe ice

found this on the hamb

The concept for a swamp cooler is that inside the unit you have a horizontal tube that is made of a mesh wire like chicken wire or rabit fence wire. Around that you have a blanket or gauze type material. You pour water into the tank and the material soaks up some of the water. The open end of the cooler (pointed to the front) introduces air into the center of the mesh tube and in turn the air flows through the wet material towards the exit point in the cooler, The exit is the vent that rests inside the cars window. So evaporation of the water cools the air flowing through the unit. When the material starts to dry and the cooling effect starts to drop, you just pull on the cord that is hanging into the car (from the vent) and it spins the mesh tube which causes it to refesh the material with new water from the tank. So, cooling via evaporation is the key to these systems. It's OK for Arizona, but not Georgia or Maryland.

I would think you put ice in it

Would be neat if you could build some sort of AC unit to fit in there......old looks with modern technology

Found this old magazine article on the HAMB, should give you an idea on what was inside the casing. I wonder if it would work with a series of venturi to cool the incoming air instead of the water tray and drum/wick method. Hummm...I'll have to think about that one.

Poncho is correct, ice goes in the box.
Really cool example of a cooler.

Years ago, maybe in the 30's-40's there was a similar unit on the market that was used on cars of that era.

As much as I would enjoy putting a cat into the cooler it would smell after a while!

I didn't see a drip tray or any way for the water to run out if ice was used?
Should there be a big ice tray that goes inside to hold the water?
Dry ice?

Hopefuly you'll see it attached to my truck sometime soon!
