These may seem like stupid questions but here goes anyway.I hear a lot of talk about how the E-brake is supposed to work for a safety. Is the E-brake now what we used to call the parking brake?Seams to me there is a big diference in function. If I grab the E-brake at speed where is the car going to go and is this now recomended procedure? On the same note is the Parking brake just supposed to hold the car on a hill or is it supposed to hold the car under power?I have heard that the cops in our area check the operation under power. What is tested for a cirtificate? Ed
a parking brake or e brake is not designed to hold your car under power, its purpose is to either hold the vehicle on a grade from rolling away and stop the vehicle if your brakes fail. cops do this to make you fail a roadside safety and bring in fine revenue. I wouldn't agree to a cop making me move my vehicle with the e brake on under power due to the damage it could cause.
It's a parking brake. Don't know why people called it an emergency brake.
It is supposed to hold a vehicle to prevent rolling.
My test when inspecting is to apply and place vehicle in drive to make sure it doesn't move. Travel distance of lever is checked too.

Sorry I forgot Rob,just having one of those moments. But seriousely if you pull the lever at speed if your brakes fail you are still going to crash,it will just be from a different direction. Ed
Cop pulls me over in my 66 Chevelle back in the day. He makes me apply the e brake and put it into drive. When I gave it a bit of throttle of course it moved. AHA! he exclaimed, the brake doesn't hold! Ya well....I don't know about you but I don't drive around with my e brake on I said. Had to take it in for an inspection and of course it passed.
NHRA test is to apply the "parking or Emm. brake" put it in gear [auto] & slightly apply power, if a "stick" it's put into 2nd. & clutch released till engine shows load!!! NO FORWARD movement allowed in either case!!!! Call it what you want, it's supposed to hold the car!!!!

I don t think a rear wheel drive will change direction if you pull the parking brake
but with a front wheel drive ............you can make some pretty quick end for end or donuts if you got power ......lots of fun doing it in winter time
I did a big brake set-up on my Caprice Wagon using 13" C5 rotors and 4 piston C3 calipers all 'round. I ran this for a few years with no parking brake. When I was going to sell the car I knew I needed some sort mechanical parking brake for a certification. The certifying mechanic said it had to hold the car with the car in gear at idle, in forward and reverse. I used a single mechanical caliper on one side of the rear and it did the trick, barely. Certainly no chance in hell it would slow the car down in an emergency.
In my experience there are plenty of cars out there that from the factory are able to drive away with the parking brake on, and others that will lock up the rears on demand. I'll stick with parking brake as a definition.
