Here's some pics from today.

This is the new 66 nova box with the attached rod for the column. All that shows is the pitman but...you get the idea.

This is the 67 steering box out.

Not sure if I will use these tires or not but they were purchased for this project.

Been putting in a lot of time with Ben on his project(6hr trip to Barrie on a Sat). But I did manage the oil pan swap and finally after almost 20 yrs I was able to steer the car with an actually steering wheel!!!! Now that we have Ben all fixed up and the shop cleaned out of all the junk from the S10 and 88 Camaro , the fun can begin again.

Lots going on in the shop ... just not much on my project.  Oldguy71Acadian stopped by today and checked out Ben's Camaro and had a great catch up session.   I did beadblast up the intake and exhaust manifold. Painted the exhaust with a cast iron looking paint rated for 1200deg...we'll see.  Put the intake on for good today and set the valve covers on for the pic and to keep the dust off the rockers.  Dug out the fuel pump and the exhaust today as well as the new (15yrs old in the box) mufflers.LOLconfuseconfuseconfuse  Getting ready for the holidays and the shop time.

This pic shows the new stering box as well.

Ben took a night off I think to let the oldman catch up a bit! LOL I did manage to sort out and shuffle the puzzle pieces again. I decided to use any NOS parts I have on this wagon. So put on NOS heater hose nipples on the intake and the waterpump. I installed the horn relay and sandblasted and painted the voltage regulator bolts to use with NOS rubber nuts. Cleaned the headlight/chassis wiring harness and installed it. Oh yeah I installed the waterpump and the fuel pump. Been a long time since I did anything with a mechanical fuel pump. I'm trying to get as much of the engine compartment done before I put it back up on the jack stands to do the plumbing of the fuel lines and all the brake lines. I showed Ben how to make things fit night before last as I beat the firewall with a rubber mallet to get enough clearance for the HEI distributer. It fits now and is temporarily installed.

Lots done today.  Had my 5yr old Jacob helping all day.  Did a bunch of assembly and some sandblasting and some painting.

Here the HEI after the firewall beating!

Spring covers are back in place as well as the horns(the big washers, horns on the other side)

Rad spacer and some other parts drying.

Exhaust manifolds waiting to go on. Just need gaskets.

More stuff waiting to go on.

Lots of empty bags and boxes under the bench.  Assembly manual is a real lifesaver.

Water pump and fuel pump in place.

some more evidence of progress!biggrinbiggrin  The hounds have been too busy with Christmas get togethers and vacations and left me alone for a bit.smilesmilesmile

Almost ready to tackle the fuse block but need a few other things in place first.  Started on the heater controls.

Here's a whole lot of tape for 30 seconds of spraying.

This is one of the nightmares I am having other than the extremely old fuse block.  I did not intend on using this steering column and am afraid I am missing parts from it. I tore it down today to see what's up with it.

Some of the finished stuff from today. I repainted the horn button and the silver on the heater controls.  Cleaned everything up ready to put back together.

These are some pics of the work done Christmas eve and day.

Almost looks like it could start!!confusebiggrin

NICE work Rich! Is that a 283 or 327? I see you have  461's / 462's or 291 double" hump" castings. Sweet.

It's a 283 with I believe they are 461 heads. 1.94 and 1.6 intake and exhaust valves if I'm not mistaken(been a awhile since it was put together). I didn't go with the 2.02 intake valves. In the 4 door Nova I had it in , it ran mid 16 sec 1/4's with a turbo 350 and a 3:08 rear gears. I'd like to be in the 15's with it (everyone wants to go faster than 15's but with this little motor I'd be happy) so I put a 2500 stall in it, Accel coil cap and rotor, the wagon has factory 3:36 rear gears. I also bought the carter fuel pump because I felt the stock one petered out around 5000RPM??? That's also why I put the Accel ignition stuff on with the adjustable(springs) vacuum modulator(I think that's what it is called) in the distributer. But it's not going to be a race car but it will see the track at grudge night.

WIRING!!!!!
To some that's all I need to say but to the others....I am dealing with 1966 and 1967 wiring and trying to piece it all together to work. The wagon came from California and the engine harnesses were both baked and had a lot of well...less than proper splicing and hacking. I am trying to get it all together and tagged so that when I am standing on my head under the dash, I can basically plug and play. The 67 was a far superior car in my opinion(styling and L79 aside). The new safety features are what I am dealing with. Brake sensor on the master and also the parking brake. The wiper motor wiring is different as well. I am trying to keep things clean and stock looking but don't want to spend money on a new harness. I am also converting to HEI so I want a clean wire install for the Batt. terminal on distributer rather than just running a loose wire to it. All this being said I am probably another night away from putting the fuse panel and under dash wiring in. Pictures later. The steering column is coming along well too. Just need a few more parts to arrive and I can start assembling it.

confuseconfuseconfuse Just to be safe Kurt...I'm not kicking anyone until I'm out cruising.   biggrinbiggrinbiggrin

Glen's like "speedy Gonzaless" before you know it he will be out cruising again and we will all be wondering ..."how'd he do that so fast??"

This wagon has a lot of parts still to be cleaned/restored and put back together and I've spent twice as long finding and figuring out where parts go than I have actually turning wrenches.  And it's just my destiny that my next project was bought in boxes!  So I will be starting all over again...but that's another story.  Ben and I put in another order through Summit Racing and will be going to see Greg in NY on the weekend.  I needed some more dress up stuff like Air cleaner, valve cover breathers, flex fan, distributer cap and rotor, carb return spring and bracket.  Well I'll let Ben tell you about his order in his thread but his car is coming along great.  We took all the old 1988 Camaro stuff and the rest of the S10 stuff to the scrap metal yard and he came out $100.00 or more ahead of the game. We also kept a lot of parts off the car some of which he will be using on the new one.  Ahhh but that is his story to tell.

Heater controls in place

Christmas presents

Steering column sleeve and internals all cleaned up

Wiring...One of my favorite things on this California wiring was the bandaids for electrical tape and the speaker wire spliced into a 14ga ignition wire with just a little wire twisting and some "real" electrical tape!!! LOLconfuseconfusenonono

Just have to figure out the HEI wiring now and the fuse block wiring will be done.

cheers

Just a few words to let the "watchers " know that progress (while slow) has been made. The dash pad is in now . It is a 67 dash pad which means drilling new holes. The fuse block is in and wires are routed, some plugged into there respective homes. I spend more time finding bolts and hardware, cleaning it , or sandblasting , then painting it then finally getting to put it back on the car. It goes like this .....1hr searching, 1/2 hr cleaning or blasting and painting, 2 minutes to put on the car!!! LOL . the other problem is that even though I tagged and bagged everything (pretty much) after 20 yrs the ink has faded to the point of being un-readable!! I'll get some picture evidence soon.

Great job! Keep up the nice clean work.
HEI hook up is easy. Pull the resistor wire out of the fuse block connector and replace it with a piece of 12 gauge. Better yet , go to the wreckers and find a factory piece of wiring and use it. You can also remove the wire from the stater to the coil.

if you wish to save a few bucks those manifolds should just bolt right to the head without gaskets and seal, ive never used gaskets on any cast manifold ive ever installed

Some more pictures of the progress.
Last weekend I got the dash pad installed.

And the wiring harness.

Todays task was to get the speedo/instrument cluster put back together. My Dad did the cleanup on this 15plus years ago and it's my job now to figure out how it goes back together. I also had to do some paint work and detailing.

Finished product looks not bad. I hand painted the silver. Originally it was chrome but I can't be paying for that. LOL

Test fit.....not bad. This would be the cruise night view so to speak.

Next project that I am still working at is the glove box door. I had to use an SS door due to broken pegs on the original. I got this on a trade with John for some Acadian parts.

I also got the wiper motor wiring install through the firewall. The glove box liner installed. The speedo cable cleaned and installed. I think that's it for now.

Grumps that 's part of the plan too!! I was hoping that a few Timmies runs this summer would be more fun than sitting around at cruise nights and the local Hortons. Not that I won't be doing cruise nights and the local Hortons, but it's been too long since I 've cruised in anything old and my wife has never had the experience so When (not if) this wagon gets on the road it's going to get a ton of stone chips and dirt on it from being driven. There's lots of great places to cruise in this area, If you go 30-60minutes in a circle so to speak. The other reason is most of the shows are on Sunday and I can't make it to them so I figure there's 6 other days to use.

Oh ...you mean race to see who gets their car done faster.   confuseconfuseconfuse

Ok .. we'll see who's done first.  Either way if we both get on the streets with them this year we are both winners.

Today was a slow day in the shop for me. Ben got lots done but Linda worked day shift and one of the other boys is looking for a good used car. So I spent most of the afternoon looking at a couple cars that were for sale and fixing his front brakes on his current wreck.  But some progress was made this week.

Glove box was painted and installed along with the inner liner.  I was messing with the stereo this week as well, some may say "why" nots not that important but There is not much room under the dash and I would like to get it rigged up before the instrument cluster is installed.

For any purists out there looking at my hacked up radio delete, it was already hacked for a two nob stereo upgrade when I got it and I am also hacking up a factory radio bezel that was defunk of all chrome and paint and usability.  I will lightly blast it and paint it black to match the glove box bezel and speedo with the silver stripes. More on that later.

Rich

Couple quick pics. The dash is in for good now hopefully and all hooked up. The ignition is in and it is actually the original 67 Nova SS switch from my first car. Kinda cool I guess.  The heater and rad hoses are fitted and just need clamps. The 283 stickers on the valve cover I think is a nice touch.  Steering column is pretty much ready to go back in.

Here's some pics for evidence. Progress is slow and tonight I went through the assembly manual to see what I had left to do. I made notes of the page number references and a long list appeared.  I want to start crossing things off the list and lately I felt I was chasing my tail in circles and not much getting done.

Steering column in place but...it looks like I am missing pieces at the other end so it might have to come back out.nonononono

I think there is a seal that goes in here and definitely a clip like a hose clamp but stronger.

Glove box door installed.

This was another problem. Didn't understand why there was two holes in this valve cover??  I thought they were unused(in the box out of my buddies late fathers chevy collection, my buddy was a Ford guy)  The pcv grommet never fit well and after I pulled it out, it was a hand drilled hole??!!nono  I had to get it machined out to fit the bigger grommet and look cleaner but when I put it back on with the bigger grommet they (who ever hand drilled the first hole) put it right over the rocker.  So...I still might need a set of valve covers.nonono If anyone has a similar set for sale (these are holley with the flat surface for the stickers), I might be in need of one if you have an odd one or both.

Another problem was the throttle linkage.  Brazed up for years but not anymore!!nonono This is and original but pretty much junk.

The solution...316 stainless throttle linkage.

The pictures are the test fit. Need locking nuts made as well. Nothing is adjusted but at least it looks like it will work.

See ya.smilesmilesmile

One of the Mill guys at work drilled the holes for me in the end links on afternoon shift. Thanks Tom.

Managed to get some work done today.

Here's some pictures of where I left it for the past 20 yrs.

Painted the gas tank with some bare cast paint.

Warranties up on these puppies!confuseconfuseconfuse

Went in OK as well as the parking brake cable and all 4 wheel cylinders.

Gas tank back into it place.

The flash sure picks up all the dust!nonono

Going to need a lot of cleaning.

Ben also did the painting on the gas filler and my missing steering column parts that a fella in Hamilton(fellow Nova owner from Steve's Nova site) donated to the wagon cause.  Big thank you to Andy.

And as I wrote in the "good Guy " thread...Scott came by with two valve covers that are the same as the one I had that was hacked up.  I will be using one of them to replace the bad one. Thanks again going out to Scott.

More on these parts later.

Rich
