A bit of market research - Car photography and Canvas Art
Permalink

I'm thinking of taking this photography thing a bit more seriously, and incorporating Canvas prints into my website.

So I'm asking you guys if you think there's a market.

My intention is to be photographer and printer, so everything would be done in-house to keep costs to a minimum, thus allowing me to offer prints/mugs etc, for as low a cost as possible.

I could offer generic images, or custom one-offs of customer's cars.

I will be offering mugs very soon, just waiting on the ink arriving for that.

Anyway, here's a rough idea of what a Canvas print would look like...

How big are these prints?? Or is there a variety of sizes? I like the Mug Idea.

Looks great Dave, I personally think you would make a killing selling those at shows like Moparfest which is coming up on the 17th and 18th,www.moparfest.com/. Let me know if you're interested, I believe all our vendor spots are sold out, but you really don't need a spot, as you'll be "canvassing" (pun intended), I can pull some strings.

I would be looking into getting a large format printer for the canvas,. but they are expensive, so I'd need to work up to that. It would allow me to print up to about 2' high, by as wide as I want.

Initially I would probably just have an A3 printer, which prints about the size of two sheets of normal paper.

The mugs are a no brainer, everyone loves mugs, lol.

Hey thanks Gazoo, I really appreciate that.

Let me see if I can get up and running first and I'll get back to you. I just picked up a used printer off Kijiji, so need to test it.

All systems are GO!

New printer is amazing. It's a 9 colour cartridge job, so colours are pretty acurate.

AND...

Sublimation ink arrived, so mugs are available too.

 Thanks Jan. Still perfecting it.

Part of this thread is to establish what Joe Public would pay for such items. Obviously Ontario Rodders get a discount, don't worry about that, but I want to price these mugs within reach of the masses.

I'm about to add another option, so if it works, I'll post a picture here soon

I'm not to sure about the car either, LOL, but the lighter is a nice touch also.
Maybe try something like this, not a Hot Rod, but great subject matter.

For mag.jpg

The '38 Dodge pickup is not picture worthy at the moment, but don't tell Glenn...I don't want to be the next guy on his list...

Paint shop pro. I love it. Tried photoshop, hated it, lol.

If I had a better camera I would have to feck about with the colours so much. But hey, one step at a time.

I need to get some good pictures of your car. I used to dream of a duster or Demon when I was in Scotland. They are a good size for UK roads. Not too big, but still muscle cars.

Dave I've got all kinds of pics of it, but I'd prefer you come take your own. You and the Mrs. are welcome anytime you'd like, I'm only 1/2 hr away from you. Huge car show next weekend, over 1,700 Mopars on Sat. and Sun., but Friday evening in New Hamburg, they have a great cruise night, open to all makes, the streets are closed to traffic, only show cars and pedestrians, every year it's growing, I would say there should be in the neighborhood of three hundred cars on Friday.

The "sharktooth grill" is a good look,

And what most small blocks Chevy's see,

A dodge parked in a driveway as they drive by?

Ok. I will agree with that

Yup, parked in the driveway, sitting in the back yard having a cold beer, and waiting for my Chevy buddy to catch up.

Looks like the pencil sketch tool (?), what are you using for a camera?

I don't really like adding effects to photos. Just wanted to see how they might look as canvas.

Camera is an old konica Minolta. It's my first DSLR, and it's been a good trainer, but I really need a newer model.

I'm not certain, but if its an autofocus model, there is a wide range of lenses that may fit if you just want to update your glass. I just picked up a beautiful Minolta 28-135 lens that I wont trade for anything. (I shoot Sony)

List of compatible lenses & bodies here - You might be able to keep some of your glass if you are just thinking of updating the body

this site is very helpful
