Driving home and truck was running great. Put in third and it stuck. Now it won't come out of third. I am very non-mechanical...if anyone lives near Barrie or knows a decent mechanic, let me know? Thanks all!
Look at the bottom of the column where the shift rods hook to the shift arms on the column . there is three pieces on , the one towards the firewall is 1st reverse arm the middle piece is the shift ter piece , the lower piece is 2nd and third arm . when the shift mechanism starts to wear , the shifter piece can fall out of place or out of sync . you can use a screw driver to pry them a bit .
I,m near young and big bay .I,ll pm you my number if you want to talk ..77.

Rectob, those 3 speed shifters get worn and lock up in the darndest places, -like right at a stoplight in town.Lol
Usually, and this always worked for me, shut it off, get out and grab the two shift levers ,on the steering column under the hood by the firewall, and pull each one into the nuetral position, Eg: they both will be pointing straight across, not up or down.
Never rebuilt one, i just switched it over to a floor shift, got rid of that embarrassing lock up problem.
When they get really worn , they fall outta sync going thru neutral . Funny when you reach the shifter up to 2nd gear place let out clutch an its still in first . Time for a floor shifter .. 77.

Mine is 56 years old and works fine . Read the manual and set it up as they say. Replace the bushings in the linkage swivels and make sure the rods are the proper length. If someone installed the double swivels replace them with singles. You may have to tweak it but once your done it will be good for another 20 years. In the meantime unjam it as already been stated above . Remember SHUT THE ENGINE OFF AND PUT THE PARKING BRAKE ON . If its jammed good you may have to take the brake off , rock the truck a bit and then put it back on. When your standing at the side of the truck reaching down it the engine bay on the wrong side of the open door things go bad fast when you hit neutral and nothings holding the truck back.
There is an adjustment to it. There is a collar at the base of the steering column, loosen the jam bolt and the collar will turn taking up the slack between the linkages.
If there is adjustment left it's an easy fix.
