Spinning metal noise after shut off??

Ok, so the wife's van just developed a noise that concerns me. When you kill the engine, there is a ringing, metallic noise that continues for 2-3 seconds after the engine stops.

What it sounds like to me is something metal still spinning making a ringing noise as if it was a big washer on a shaft or something. It sounds like it is coming from inside the engine, and getting louder every day. 

Any ideas? I'm not liking the sounds of this as I don't want new car payments just yet....

its a grand caravan with a 3.8L - 240k

no brand jokes please...

those vans have a clutch on the alternator, why they do this i dont know but its like an air conditioner clutch, since they operate all the time they wear out faster.  people i know simply swap in a non clutched alt and rock on.

Thanks guys. I think Fatstax might be on to something. The AC quit working...must be in the compressor. I forgot all about that as I never drive the thing. 

Hubby of the year award ....NOT

Disconect the serp-belt to eliminate any of the pullys or belt driven accessories..

it has to something with a bit of weight to keep the momentum. like mentioned take the belt off and i'd circle in on the tranny. .02

When you have it off check the belt brother thought the alternater clutch was going south on his turned out to be chunk missing on the belt.

It will be the over running clutch in the alternator.

Yes, I have to agree with the overrunning clutch n the alternator, wandered what the ruckus was in my wife's Pacifica, looked down to see a nice line machined in the air breather box from the recoil spring hanging out of it... Want a Chrysler product to change you mind about owning anything Chrysler ever again buy a Pacifica, what a bag do ****! 159,000 km and its falling apart everywhere, changed everything in the front end to eliminate a huge clunk and it's still there like every other one Ive run across yet..
