Seems the good people of Niagara possible else where are paying guys and girls 100 grand a year to carry a gun and hand out tickets for not removing your hitch from your receiver. Being the super hero's they are and after cleaning up all really serious crime they need something to do. I think maybe next week ILL have me some ticket books printed up and randomly pass them out. and just to be fair Ill give you a discount if you pay it early. You know the saying if you cant beat them join them.
I think it known as tax tool . 200 bucks if your fool enough to pay it. Its to cut down damage if someone rear ends you. Truth be told im sure it has something to do with rear ending you.

I'd be really interested to know what the charge is. There's nothing in the Highway Traffic Act about this. They're a shin grabber for sure but NOT ILLEGAL!!!

No but i was talking to the guy that did .Never did ask How the charge was written down. He was quite pissed all the same this was the Fonthill area. Pulls a trailer 3 or 4 times a week. I really have no reason to believe that he was full of it . Weather its a real law or their misinterpretation of one fact is its easy money and 9 out of 10 are just going to pay it. Before the town i live in (Dundas) was forced to join the big stink they contracted out the parking cops. So they would walk around handing out tickets that were printed out on some hand held thing. Believe me I got a few never paid one still waiting for them to set the first one's court date and after 10 years I don't think it will happen. Not one of these people were qualified to write a ticket and fact is they didn't it was printed out on a grocery recite . Funniest part was at the bottom it printed out signed and then the persons name.I don't know how many times I was at the bylaw office and had to tell the guy ,listen Alice I'm not here to talk to you give me a court date and he would hand me a piece of paper and tell me they will contact me with a date. never happened. Point is how many just payed and how many did Alice talk into paying. he was really quite good at it. Frankly I miss it now we have real bylaw cops that hand out real tickets but Ive only had a few real judges yell at me for wasting their time but thats OK because I'm the one paying for their time.
I did ask him what about the trailer hitches that are fixed to the vehicle and he was told they are OK . more stupidity

I think it's only illegal if it blocks your license plate. Some of us have our receivers turned up to get the proper tongue height and this can block the plate. Still it's pretty nit picky.
I've been taking mine out for as long as I can remember. One of the first vehicles I bought had a ball mount that was very stuck - after a few days of soaking with WD40 and lots of fire and heat, I managed to bash it out with a sledge, which ruined the ball and bent the mount. I am constantly switching between a 2" ball and a 2 5/16" ball and don't need to fight with it every time, so I remove them. It has only been in the last couple of years that I've been hearing about these tickets, but since I remove it anyway I basically ignore the rule. The only hassle I can see is safely storing it in the car/truck - I hollowed out a big thick piece of Styrofoam and wedge it under my driver seat frame. It doesn't move until I need it.

last week Regional Police not the mto 200 bucks and as i said fonthill area If i run into the guy next week Ill try to find out the charge. but from the sounds of it he was stop for this reason and nothing else.
looking at a older thread in Durham it was a 150 dollar fine
This is what happens when they make a law and its up to interpretation and not clear and to the point. even if the cop is wrong. the average Jo isn't going to beat the charge on wording in court without representation and for a 150 or 200 buck fine 99% will just pay it and move on . You should know better then most if you spent 20 years with the mto that the system is broke and has been for some time and the only ones that can fix it are the ones that broke it.

Slim, we need more facts here. What was the charge, who laid the charge (OPP, Regional Police, MTO), how much was the fine, when did this happen, what were the circumstances? I worked this same area for 23 years wearing an MTO uniform and there is NO SUCH LAW, period – licence plate visibility the exception.
Makes me wonder about all the nit picking laws you guys have out there in southern and eastern Ontario..either I am one lucky sob or the cops north of bracebridge couldn't be bothered writing stupid tickets..only once in 40 yrs was I ever pulled over while hauling my race car and that was outside of gravenhurst,,I think he just wanted to look at my car...never have I been pulled over for having my receiver sticking out while travelling to swap meets all over Ontario..and never ever been pulled over while driving a hotrod.
Everybody and their brother drives pickups around here....and 90% of them have the hitch ball in place. I take mine off cus I keep whacking my damn shins on it.
Talked to the guy today never had the ticket on him but he said it says right on it hitch in receiver. says he talked to Niagara police services and they say its a new law ( that they made up ) and is only (now get this) police Law and doesn't apply to the mto. I believe it's true... not...
Where the frig do you get your info from Slim? My sons best friend is with the OPP we challenged her to find something on this. guess what there is nothing in here little black book that she could find. Perhaps it is a subsection under another section but she could not find any section. I also have a friend in Minden that is an OPP officer perhaps I will ask him too.

So I spoke to y friend in Minden last night and asked him to look into this. he started to laugh because earlier in the day he wacked his shin on his own receiver and ball. He called me back and said he could also find nothing related to this under the highway traffic act. He also mentioned that every other vehicle is a pick up or a SUV in his neck of the woods and it would be a full time job ticketing everyone. So who knows just another rumor?
