Take the fighting out of hockey and watch how short the careers of the super stars are. Cheap shots, dirty hits and stickwork will be out of hand. Do you think Gretzky would have had the career he did without guys like Semenko and McSorely? They had the title of "Enforcer" to enforce the unwritten rules : You don't touch our super star, you do....you pay.

The calls are too inconsistent as it is, one minute hooking, holding and slashing is fine - next minute they can't move without a call. If you take out the fighting the refs will HAVE to call EVERYTHING! Then the game will be so slow with all the cross checks, slashing and high sticks and the powerplays/penalty kills that will go with them. I'd rather see two guys going toe to toe than one guy chopping a guys head off with a two hander.

I say 'Ask the players'. The super stars are all thanking they're lucky stars that there is still fighting in the game, I will guarantee you that much!

just sitting here on a friday night with golf finishing and I'm  waiting to watch the argos play . Then envisioned what it would be like if golf was like the NHL and everyone was fighting. Just can't see Tiger Woods or any othe golfer playing a round then all of a sudden  a fight breaks out!!!

I gave up on watching hockey because of the fighting which is a total waste of time.
Also, what does this fighting do to a young kid that wants to play hockey, but isn't a fighter?

The young kids do just fine .Anybody who coaches or is involved in minor sports know the kids are fully aware of the difference between pro sports and your local house league. There is no contact allowed in minor hockey .My son and daughter went thru all the divisions Daughter played on boys teams and hd no problem .Son enjoyed being on a team and learned to win and loose as a team .Important lesssons in this me first world. You won't find many selfish people who grew up playing team sports .As for the hockey fights ,the players that fight are there for that reason only. There are far more people who watch and enjoy hockey who don't mind a fight once in awhile caused by emotion.I will agree that the staged type of fight has no place in the sport.I find a fight a lot better and less likley to cause ingiry than the old days of the 60s and the stick swinging and no helmet, now that was brutal. Some of those who want fighting removed from hockey would probably want the "big one" taken out of NASCAR.You can't tell me that people tune in to a race ,hopeing everybody playes nice and there are no wrecks. As for full contact golf, its still golf, who cares. Ed

Ed, i'm one guy who follows Barrie a lot. Crashes in that sport do nothing but cost guys money , trying like a lot of us ,,to run on a shoestring budget.
I'm there to watch good clean skilfull driving, that's what it is all about.
People that go to these races hoping to see crashes have no clue at all about what the sport is about, they know ZIP about the cars, performance , and the driving skills of the competitors.

That's why it's under "Ontario Rodders Lounge".

Anything can be discussed here.

Me too! Happy Gilmore made millions at the box office. I watched it a few times myself, and I don't even golf!

I'm glad to see that the majority agree. Hockey has always been a tough sport, but the fighting is out of hand. Its become a circus. The two should be separated as far as I'm concerned. If you want to fight, take up a fighting sport like boxing or MMA. Nothing wrong with either...just separate them

You are correct.  My apology.  I must learn to stay out of "the lounge"

....and all these years I thought I was the ONLY guy who figured this was the only way to make such a stupid sport half-ways interesting. Take a bunch of Spinner Spencers, Domi's and Durbano's, suit them up and turn them loose. Gotta hop up the golf carts too though.........
